To debug an Angular test, first identify whether the project uses Vitest or Karma, then inspect the failing test in the environment that matches the failure. For component tests, start with the ComponentFixture, component instance, rendered DOM, and—when useful—the DebugElement tree. Use a real browser for browser-specific behavior or debugging, not automatically for every unit-test failure.

1. Identify the test runner and environment

Check the Angular test target and existing test setup before following runner-specific instructions. Angular’s current testing overview says new Angular CLI projects use Vitest by default. That setup runs in Node.js and uses jsdom to simulate the DOM; Karma remains supported for existing projects. Angular’s testing overview

Angular’s guidance is that “While the default Node.js environment is faster for most unit tests, you can run your tests in a real browser. This is useful for tests that rely on browser-specific APIs (like rendering) or for debugging.” Browser mode is an option when the test needs browser APIs or a real browser would make the problem easier to investigate—not a required step for every failure. Angular names Playwright and WebdriverIO as browser-provider examples. Angular’s testing overview

  • Vitest with jsdom: a practical starting point for ordinary unit tests and simulated DOM behavior.
  • A real browser: consider it when the failure involves browser-specific APIs, rendering, or browser-based debugging.
  • Karma: use the existing Karma workflow if that is the runner configured for the project; do not assume its debugging steps apply to Vitest.

Angular documents setting a browser through angular.json or the CLI. Consult the browser-testing guidance for the exact configuration appropriate to the provider and project. Angular testing overview · Angular Karma guide

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Inspect a failing component test

Angular’s ComponentFixture connects the component instance to its test DOM. Inspect both: a correct component property does not guarantee that the expected template output is present, and a DOM mismatch can point to a change-detection or setup issue. Angular component testing guide

  • Use fixture.componentInstance to examine the component’s state and methods.
  • Inspect the fixture’s DOM representation to see what the template actually rendered.
  • Use DebugElement when you need to explore the component tree or injector.
  • Use fixture stability and change-detection controls, including whenStable(), when asynchronous work or rendering timing may explain the failure.

When an assertion fails, compare the expected value with the state and DOM at the moment the assertion runs. If asynchronous work is involved, check whether the test waits for stability before inspecting the rendered result.

3. Check TestBed setup order

Configure TestBed before creating the component. Angular says that calling createComponent() freezes the TestBed definition, so later configuration changes cannot be applied to that test setup. Angular component testing guide

  1. Set up the testing module and its providers, imports, or overrides.
  2. Call TestBed.createComponent() only after that configuration is complete.
  3. Then inspect the fixture, trigger change detection as needed, and make assertions.

4. Use browser breakpoints only with the matching runner

Angular’s documented browser breakpoint walkthrough is for Karma. In that workflow, reveal the Karma browser, click DEBUG, open developer tools and the Sources panel, open the spec, set a breakpoint, and refresh. Angular’s v18 debugging guide says, “Debug specs in the browser in the same way that you debug an application,” but the surrounding instructions describe Karma. Do not treat those clicks as verified instructions for a current Vitest project. The current Angular guidance establishes Vitest as the default for new CLI projects, but the cited debugging pages do not provide an equivalent step-by-step Vitest breakpoint procedure. For Vitest, follow the setup and debugging options supported by the runner and IDE actually configured in your project.

5. Match the debugging approach to the failure

Failure or need Start here
Component state or template assertion Inspect the component instance and rendered fixture DOM; use DebugElement to explore the tree or injector.
Asynchronous update or rendering timing Check fixture stability and change detection, including whether the test awaits whenStable() where appropriate.
Test setup or unexpected dependencies Review TestBed configuration and confirm it all happens before createComponent().
Browser-specific API or rendering behavior Consider a real-browser environment; Angular lists Playwright and WebdriverIO as browser-provider examples.
Need to pause in a browser debugger If the project uses Karma, follow Angular’s Karma-specific browser breakpoint workflow. Do not transpose it to Vitest.
