Use YouTube’s live-chat controls together: block recurring spam terms, hold potentially inappropriate messages for review, and have a moderator remove spam or time out repeat offenders. If that is not enough, turn on slow mode or restrict chat to subscribers or members. None of these controls guarantees a spam-free chat, so keep a person available to review messages and respond.
Set up moderation before the stream
Configure blocked words and message review

In YouTube Studio, open Settings → Community moderation → Content controls. Depending on your account view or YouTube’s current interface, the moderation options may appear under a slightly different label.

Add recurring spam terms to Blocked words. This is most useful when spam repeatedly uses recognizable wording. Review the list over time: misspellings and altered terms can get around a list of exact terms.

Choose a setting to hold potentially inappropriate live-chat messages. YouTube describes Basic as holding potentially inappropriate messages and Strict as holding a broader range. A creator or moderator can show or hide a held message; if no one acts, it remains hidden.

Filtering is assistance, not a guarantee. YouTube Help puts it plainly: “No system is perfect, but this feature can make it easier for you to moderate live chat messages on your live stream.” A moderator still needs to review held items and handle messages that pass through.
Assign moderators who can act
Choose moderators who can monitor chat during the event and understand when to remove a message, time out a participant, or hide a persistent spammer. YouTube distinguishes standard moderators from managing moderators. Managing moderators have additional controls, but do not have access to YouTube Studio or Live Control Room; set account-level controls yourself or make sure the assigned role has the access needed for its responsibilities.

Choose the right control for the spam pattern

Slow mode and subscribers-only chat can be used together. Members-only and subscribers-only chat cannot. The appropriate setting depends on how much participation you need to preserve while managing the disruption.
Respond to spam while live

Remove obvious spam. Have a moderator delete or remove the message rather than letting it distract the conversation.

Time out a repeat offender. A timeout temporarily prevents a participant from chatting. YouTube’s current Help guidance lists durations from 10 seconds up to 24 hours; choose a duration that fits the incident.

Hide persistent or coordinated spammers. Hiding a user makes their messages and comments invisible to other viewers without telling them. Use this when removing individual messages or a timeout is not enough.

Review held messages. Show legitimate messages and leave spam hidden. A message not reviewed remains hidden, so assign someone to the queue if you want legitimate viewers’ messages to appear.

Add friction only if needed. Turn on slow mode to reduce posting frequency. If the spam continues, use subscribers-only chat, optionally with a minimum subscription duration. Move to members-only chat only if limiting participation to members is appropriate for your audience.

Turn chat off only as a last resort. YouTube’s managing-moderator guidance includes the ability to turn live chat off. This stops chat participation for everyone, so reserve it for cases where the event cannot be moderated effectively.
Know what YouTube’s controls do—and do not—cover
YouTube Help says live-chat messages containing URLs are blocked. Its comment-settings guidance also discusses URL and blocked-word behavior, but comment controls should not be assumed to map identically to every live-chat setting. Use the live-chat moderation controls for the live event.
YouTube’s live-stream overview states that a participant may send up to 11 messages every 30 seconds and that each message is limited to 200 characters. These are platform participation limits, not a measure of filter effectiveness or a promise that spam will be stopped.
Review the incident after the stream
YouTube says live-chat replay is available with stream archives by default, although a channel can turn replay off. If you review an incident later, distinguish the archived live-chat replay from post-stream video comments: they are not the live moderation queue.
