To customize a live stream with overlays, choose the visuals you need, create or select an overlay, then add it to your broadcasting software as a source. In OBS Studio, a StreamElements overlay can be added as a Browser source; Streamlabs Desktop also supports image sources, while Streamlabs documents plugin and scene-collection routes for OBS. Keep the layout readable and clear of important gameplay or camera content.
What a stream overlay does
An overlay adds visual elements on top of a broadcast. Examples include alerts, labels, goals and chat. StreamElements describes its overlays as elements composed in its Overlay Editor and rendered in broadcasting software through a browser source.
Start by deciding which elements help viewers follow the stream. A full-canvas frame, a small label and a chat panel have different space needs; adding everything available can make important content harder to see.
Add a StreamElements overlay to OBS Studio
- Copy the overlay URL. Open the overlay in the StreamElements dashboard or editor and copy its URL.
- Add a Browser source in OBS. In the scene you want to customize, go to the Sources panel, select the add-source control, and choose Browser.
- Paste the URL. Enter the copied overlay URL in the Browser source properties.
- Set the dimensions. Set the source width and height to match your stream canvas if the overlay is full-canvas. StreamElements says the overlay size usually should match the stream resolution; use smaller dimensions if you want a smaller element that you can reposition in the broadcasting software.
- Position and check it. Arrange the source in the scene, then inspect the result to ensure visible elements do not cover important gameplay, camera content or other information.

Choose a Streamlabs workflow
Streamlabs documents multiple ways to use overlays, so choose the path that matches both your software and the format of the overlay you have.

Make the overlay fit the stream
- Match the source to the job. Use stream-canvas dimensions for a full-screen design; choose a smaller size when you want a movable overlay element.
- Keep important content visible. Place alerts, chat and labels where they do not obscure gameplay, a presenter or other essential information.
- Use only relevant elements. Add the alerts, labels, goals or chat your stream needs rather than filling the scene simply because those elements are available.
- Choose by format and software. A URL-based overlay, image assets, plugin installation and scene-collection import are distinct routes. Use the provider’s current instructions for the combination you select.
