You can customize an iPhone Lock Screen with a personal or built-in wallpaper, a styled clock, widgets, quick controls, photo effects, and Focus-linked screens. To begin, wake your iPhone, touch and hold the Lock Screen, then tap Add New Lock Screen Wallpaper. To change a saved screen, swipe to it and tap Customize. If the gallery does not open, touch and hold again and enter your passcode.
Choose a wallpaper and decide how it pairs with your Home Screen
From the Lock Screen gallery, tap Add New Lock Screen Wallpaper. You can also start in Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper. Apple offers wallpapers from your Photos, Photo Shuffle, and built-in selections such as Weather & Astronomy, Emoji, Color, and featured collections such as Nature. If a category you want is not shown, scroll down and tap Get beneath it. See Apple’s wallpaper instructions.
After choosing a wallpaper, select Set as Wallpaper Pair to use it on both the Lock Screen and Home Screen. Choose Customize Home Screen if you want a different Home Screen background; you can style that separately with a color, photo, or blur.
Use Photo Shuffle for rotating images
Photo Shuffle can use featured photo categories such as People, Nature, or Cities, an album you choose, or individual photos selected manually. Set the change frequency to On Tap, On Lock, Hourly, or Daily. A static wallpaper is simpler; a shuffle is useful when you want the screen to rotate through a chosen set of images.

Change the clock and apply photo effects
Tap the time to change its font or make it more transparent. You can also drag the clock’s lower-right corner to increase its height. The available appearance and effects depend on the wallpaper you chose, so not every option appears for every image.
Depending on the wallpaper, you may be able to choose a light or dark appearance, apply a color filter, reposition or zoom the photo, or use a layered Depth Effect. An eligible Live Photo may add motion. These effects can make a photo feel more distinctive, but keep the clock, notifications, and widgets legible against the image.

Use a spatial wallpaper on supported iPhones
With iOS 26, iPhone 12 or later can turn certain photos into spatial wallpapers. Not every photo qualifies; Apple says eligible images typically have good lighting, clear separation between the subject and background, or landscape orientation. When enabled, the spatial effect appears on the Lock Screen even when you use a Wallpaper Pair. See Apple’s compatibility and wallpaper guidance.
Add widgets and choose what appears at a glance
In the Lock Screen editor, tap an existing widget area or Add Widgets to add or replace widgets. The choices depend on the wallpaper. Widgets are useful for information you want to see without opening an app; a photo-first screen can instead stay uncluttered.

Replace the bottom quick controls
The Lock Screen’s bottom controls can be changed. In the editor, remove a control such as Flashlight, then add another supported quick action. This lets you put a frequently used action within reach or keep the bottom of the screen simpler. Which controls are available depends on the options offered in the editor.

Link different Lock Screens to Focus
You can keep several saved Lock Screens and link one to a Focus, such as Do Not Disturb, Personal, Sleep, or Work. Set up the Focus first, then link it from the wallpaper gallery. When that Focus is active, its linked Lock Screen appears; switching to a linked Lock Screen also changes the associated Focus.

To remove one, open the gallery, swipe up on that screen, and delete it. Separate screens can suit different routines—for example, a work screen with relevant glanceable information and a quieter personal screen.

Check what other people can see
The Lock Screen can show notifications, app widgets, media controls, and Live Activities. Examples include Maps directions, sports scores in Apple TV, and delivery updates; Live Activities availability varies by app. If notification details could reveal private information, change notification-preview visibility to Always, When Unlocked, or Never.
