To give an Android phone a more polished look, start with one wallpaper, let the system color options complement it where available, then arrange apps, widgets, and icons around what you actually use. The exact controls vary by phone maker, launcher, and Android version; the steps below are specifically for Pixel phones unless noted.
Choose a visual direction and wallpaper
Pick a simple direction before changing settings: muted, colorful, dark, or minimal. A wallpaper gives the rest of the screen a visual anchor, so choose one that leaves enough contrast behind icons and text rather than competing with them.
On devices that support Material You dynamic color, colors extracted from the wallpaper can inform parts of the system palette. That behavior is described in Android’s Material You design documentation, and Google’s examples are Pixel-specific in its Pixel customization guide. It does not mean every app will adopt the palette, and other manufacturers may expose different options.

Set the wallpaper and inspect the colors
On a Pixel, open the wallpaper and style controls to choose a wallpaper and review the available color choices. Labels and options can differ on other Android phones, so use the phone maker’s wallpaper or personalization settings if the Pixel path is not present.

After applying the wallpaper, look at common screens and app icons. If text or icons are hard to distinguish, try a less busy image or a different color option. Treat the result as a starting point, not a promise that the entire interface or every app will change color.
Clear and organize the home screen
Remove items that do not help with your routine, and group related apps when that makes them easier to find. A cleaner screen can still be practical: keep frequently used apps easy to reach and use folders for less frequently opened groups.

Pixel controls
Google’s Pixel Help page, Add apps, shortcuts & widgets to your Home screens, documents long-press and drag controls for arranging apps and shortcuts, as well as creating folders. Google notes that some of its steps work only on Android 14 and up. These instructions are for Pixel phones; another maker’s launcher may use different gestures or settings.

Widgets can put information or app functions on the home screen without opening the app. Android’s app widget overview describes information, collection, control, and hybrid widget types. Choose only widgets that answer a real need, such as checking information at a glance or reaching a useful control.

Start with one or two, then move or resize them if the widget and launcher support it. Keep enough open space for the wallpaper and for labels or content to remain legible. More widgets add convenience only when their information is easy to scan.
Adjust icon size and layout
On Pixel, Google documents this route for icon sizing: Wallpaper & style → Layout, then select an icon size. The available layout controls can depend on the Pixel and Android version. If your phone does not show those labels, check its home-screen or display settings rather than assuming the Pixel path applies.

Review the result at your usual screen brightness and with your most-used apps in place. The goal is a clear hierarchy: important apps are easy to access, widgets are readable, and the wallpaper does not undermine contrast.
Keep the setup simple and device-specific
Built-in wallpaper, layout, and widget controls are enough to make a cohesive screen. The documented Pixel features do not establish uniform controls across all Android devices, nor do they establish that third-party customization apps are compatible, safe, or free. If you consider an additional app, check its current compatibility and permissions independently.

This is a software-led change: the cited customization controls adjust the interface, and no physical accessory is needed to achieve it. For app developers rather than home-screen users, Google’s Material Design for Android covers app styling; it is not evidence that users can apply a launcher theme through that page.
