Start with VS Code’s built-in Doc Writer profile, then tune settings, shortcuts, and optional extensions to suit your writing. Keep preferences you want everywhere in User settings; put project-specific Markdown choices in Workspace settings or a profile associated with that workspace. Before relying on preview or spell-checking, confirm that VS Code and any extensions support the Markdown dialect and checks you need.
How do I customize VS Code for writing?
A profile gives you a convenient way to separate a writing setup from your coding or general-purpose environment. VS Code’s Markdown guide presents the Doc Writer profile template as a curated starting point. You can use it as provided or adapt it; review its included settings and extensions rather than assuming every item is necessary for your workflow. See Markdown and Visual Studio Code.
- Open the Profiles menu from the Manage gear or Command Palette and create a profile from the Doc Writer template.
- Review the profile’s settings and extensions, and remove or adjust anything you do not need.
- Use the profile for writing, then associate it with a workspace if you want that project to open with the writing configuration.
Profiles can include selected settings, extensions, snippets, keyboard shortcuts, and UI customizations. A profile copied from another profile does not inherit later changes made to its source. Which settings should be global, and which should be project-specific?
Use User settings for preferences you want across VS Code projects, such as your usual editor behavior. Use Workspace settings for choices that belong to one project, such as its Markdown conventions. If the same setting is defined in both places, the workspace setting takes precedence.

You can edit settings in the Settings editor or directly in settings.json. For Markdown-only behavior, use language-specific settings so the adjustment applies when editing Markdown rather than every file type. The official documentation demonstrates options such as editor.wordWrap and whitespace rendering; treat its example as something to test, not a universal writing preset. - Choose wrapping based on whether you prefer paragraphs to stay within the editor window or preserve long visual lines.
- Try whitespace rendering if you need to inspect indentation or trailing spaces; turn it off if the visual marks distract you.
- Test suggestion behavior while drafting and editing, and keep it only if it helps rather than interrupts your flow.
How do I set up VS Code for Markdown?
VS Code’s Markdown support includes editing and preview, but compatibility depends on the syntax you write. Microsoft’s Markdown documentation states that “VS Code targets the CommonMark Markdown specification using the markdown-it library.” If your documents rely on GitHub Flavored Markdown or another dialect’s features, test those specific constructs in the preview instead of assuming every extension is supported.

Markdown-specific settings can be configured without changing behavior in other languages. The Doc Writer profile may also include extensions, but the built-in Markdown support and optional additions are separate: install an extension only when it supplies a capability you actually need. Does VS Code have spell check?
Spell checking is not included by default in VS Code. A Marketplace extension can provide it. Check the listing’s description, publisher, and reviews before installing, and verify that its behavior suits the language and writing style you use. Extension listings and maintenance can change over time; no particular spell-checking extension is required by the Doc Writer workflow.

Install from the Extensions view or the Marketplace. If an extension proves distracting or unnecessary, disable it temporarily or uninstall it. See Use extensions in Visual Studio Code.
How do I make VS Code less distracting for writing?
There is no single distraction-free preset that suits every writer. Use the profile and editor settings to remove interruptions that affect your own drafting or editing, then keep only changes that make a practical difference.

- Adjust wrapping and whitespace visibility for the way you review prose and Markdown.
- Separate writing preferences from coding preferences with a dedicated profile.
- Remove extensions that add notifications, suggestions, or other features you do not use; disabling is reversible.
- Remap only frequently used commands that currently interrupt a repeated task.
How do I change writing shortcuts?
Open the Keyboard Shortcuts editor to search for a command and assign a binding. Custom bindings are stored in keybindings.json. If you are switching from another editor, a keymap extension may reproduce familiar shortcuts, but confirm the bindings in your own VS Code installation.

How do I sync VS Code writing settings between computers?
Use profile synchronization or export to carry a writing configuration to another machine. Profile export omits machine-specific settings, such as local paths, so check those separately after moving the profile. Synchronization and export are useful for keeping selected writing preferences together, but they do not make local machine details portable. See Profiles in Visual Studio Code.
