You can customize StreamElements alerts by enabling custom code for an alert type in an AlertBox, then editing its HTML, CSS, and JavaScript in the Overlay Editor. CSS controls appearance and animation; JavaScript can coordinate behavior or respond to widget events. Use the platform’s documented event variables, then test the result in your streaming software—not only in the editor preview.
Choose between an AlertBox and a Custom Widget
For a standard follow, subscription, tip, or similar notification, use StreamElements’ native AlertBox. It displays live events from a queue, and you can enable custom code separately for each alert type. A Custom Widget is a more flexible option when you need your own event-driven layout or editor-configurable settings. Its HTML, CSS, and JavaScript run in a protected sandbox, so it is not the same as unrestricted browser code. StreamElements’ overlay setup guide explains the available overlay components.
Set up custom code on an AlertBox

In StreamElements, create an overlay and choose a canvas resolution that matches your intended browser-source layout. The overlay guide recommends selecting a suitable resolution during setup.

Add an AlertBox to the overlay.

Open the AlertBox options and choose the event tab you want to customize, such as Followers.

Turn on Enable custom CSS for that event type. The custom code is edited in the Overlay Editor’s Code Editor. Repeat for other event tabs that need different treatment.

Edit the alert markup and styles, and add JavaScript only when you need behavior beyond presentation. Keep selectors tied to the markup and documented classes for the alert you are editing.
StreamElements describes this as a native AlertBox that renders events from a queue. Its custom AlertBox code reference documents event variables and examples.

Use the event data the alert actually provides
AlertBox templates can use variables for event-specific information. The available values depend on the event: for example, an alert may have a name but no amount, or a message but no subscription tier. Do not assume every variable applies to every event.

Use only variables documented for the alert type and verify that they render with representative events. If you use JavaScript setTimeout to coordinate an exit with {{widgetDuration}}, convert the duration from seconds to milliseconds: setTimeout(callback, durationSeconds * 1000). Style and animate with CSS
Keep the markup’s selectors specific enough that a change for one event does not unexpectedly affect other alerts. Use CSS for layout, typography, color, transitions, and keyframe animations; it supports ordinary CSS syntax. Size and position the content for the overlay canvas and check how it behaves at the dimensions used by your streaming software.

- Long names and messages: test wrapping and overflow rather than assuming every event fits on one line.
- Animation timing: make entrance and exit animations fit within the AlertBox’s configured display duration.
- Media: check that images, video, and audio URLs appear or play as intended in the rendered alert.
- Special characters: test names and messages containing punctuation, accented characters, or other unusual text.
When a Custom Widget is the better fit
Choose a Custom Widget when the AlertBox’s event-specific controls are not enough—for example, when you want a custom layout with editor fields for colors or text, or JavaScript that reacts to widget lifecycle and incoming events. The editor has separate HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and FIELDS tabs. Fields let you expose configurable choices to the overlay editor. JavaScript can listen for onWidgetLoad, which provides field and session information, and onEventReceived, which provides event information such as the listener type and payload.
StreamElements runs widget code in a protected sandbox. Its documentation identifies limits including no access to cookies, console.*, or IndexedDB storage. Avoid assuming undocumented payload shapes or that session-data keys will remain unchanged; consult the current Custom Widget tutorial and widget structure and custom fields reference when building against event data. External libraries can be included, but relying on them adds a dependency whose availability or behavior can change.

Test in the scene that will show the alert

Preview the alert in the overlay editor and test each event type you customized.

Add the overlay to your streaming software as a browser source using the platform’s overlay URL, then place it in the scene where it will appear.

Trigger representative test events and check the actual source for visibility, positioning, dimensions, text wrapping, media, and animation timing.

Adjust the overlay or browser-source dimensions and repeat the test if the alert clips, overlaps other elements, or renders differently from the editor.

An editor preview is useful, but only a test in the destination scene verifies the complete rendering path.

Streamlabs offers a separate Alert Box setup with test controls, browser-source insertion for OBS and other software, event filtering for browser-source Widget URLs, and a theme library with free and premium choices.
