The steps below follow Apple’s iOS 26 guides; labels and available features can differ on earlier iOS versions and by iPhone model.
Check your iOS version and find settings
Open Settings > General > About and check the iOS version listed on your iPhone. Apple’s procedures linked here are for iOS 26, so treat a different version’s menus as potentially different. Settings categories and features can also vary by model. Apple’s overview of iOS 26 features is available in its iOS 26 guide.

If you cannot find a menu, open Settings, tap the search field, and enter a plain keyword such as “volume,” “notifications,” or “text size.” Choose a matching result to jump to the setting. Apple’s guide to finding iPhone settings also identifies common categories:
- Display & Brightness: brightness and Auto-Lock.
- Notifications: alerts and notification behavior.
- Sounds & Haptics: tones, volume, and vibration.
- Focus: options for managing interruptions.
- Screen Time: screen-use controls.
- Privacy & Security: privacy settings.
- Accessibility: features for vision, hearing, mobility, speech, and other needs.
Make the Home Screen easier to use
Change app icon appearance and size
On iOS 26, touch and hold an empty area of the Home Screen until the apps jiggle. Tap Edit > Customize, then choose an available icon appearance and size. Apple documents dark, clear, and tinted looks. Larger icons hide app names, so consider whether that trade-off makes your Home Screen easier or harder to scan. For the exact iOS 26 options, see Apple’s Home Screen customization guide.

Add or arrange widgets
Use the Home Screen edit menu to add widgets and position them where they are useful. A widget can provide quick information or actions, but remember that information displayed on the Lock Screen may be visible while the phone is locked; review Lock Screen access before placing sensitive information there.
Personalize the Lock Screen and Control Center
Change the Lock Screen
Touch and hold the Lock Screen to open its customization controls. From there, change the wallpaper, clock appearance or size, widgets, and bottom controls. The right choices depend on whether you prioritize a glanceable display, a particular look, or keeping information private while the phone is locked. Apple’s iPhone personalization guide describes Lock Screen and Control Center options.

Open and customize Control Center
The gesture for opening Control Center depends on the iPhone: swipe down from the top-right edge on a Face ID model, or swipe up from the bottom on a model with a Home button. Use the Add button and the Add a Control gallery to include controls you use often. Keeping the selection focused can make quick controls easier to find.
Adjust sound, notifications, and accessibility
Set sound and vibration preferences
Go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics to adjust ringtone and text tones, volume, vibration, and related sound behavior. The useful setup depends on where and how you use the phone—for example, whether you rely on audible alerts, vibration, or a quieter notification routine. Apple’s personalization guide covers sound settings.

Choose accessibility adjustments
Start at Settings > Accessibility. Options include larger or bolder text and display changes, touch and mobility accommodations, captions and hearing features, sound recognition, spoken controls, and cognitive supports. If text is difficult to read, Apple’s guide to making text easier to read explains relevant choices. Its accessibility overview covers the broader range of features.
Review notification behavior
Open Settings > Notifications to choose how alerts and notification previews appear. If you want fewer interruptions, review your Focus settings as well. A balance that works during the day may not suit a shared space or a locked phone left in view.

Balance Lock Screen convenience with privacy
To review what someone might access while holding your locked iPhone, open Settings > Face ID & Passcode or Settings > Touch ID & Passcode, depending on your model, and check Allow Access When Locked. Apple explains these Lock Screen options in its guide to turning on Lock Screen features.
Allowing widgets or other features on the Lock Screen is convenient, but may expose personal information to someone who has the locked phone. Turning off access can protect that information, while removing the corresponding quick access for you. Pair that choice with the notification-preview setting under Settings > Notifications: show previews if glanceable alerts matter more, or restrict them if you prefer more privacy.

Where did my iPhone setting go after the update?
Search for the setting’s purpose rather than relying on its old menu location—for example, “volume,” “notifications,” or “text size.” If the result does not appear, confirm the installed iOS version and iPhone model; a feature or section may be different or unavailable on your device. Apple’s iOS 26 instructions should not be assumed to match every earlier release.
