Gboard’s layout and autocorrect controls are in its Settings menu: use Languages to choose a keyboard layout, and Text correction to manage suggestions. You can also teach it personal words and undo unwanted automatic corrections. The exact controls vary by language, device, and app version, so check what appears on your phone.
Open Gboard settings
- Open an app with a text field and bring up Gboard.
- Open the keyboard’s feature menu, tap More, then Settings. Google also notes that setup options may be reached from device settings, where the system keyboard menus differ by device. See Google’s Gboard setup guide.
Choose a language and keyboard layout
In Gboard Settings, tap Languages, select a language, then choose one of the layouts offered for it. Layout choices are language-specific. If you use more than one language, configure each separately rather than assuming the same layout is applied across all keyboards.
Consider the trade-off before changing a layout: a configuration that makes frequently used keys easier to reach may move or omit controls you rely on. The available options on your device are the practical limit; Google’s setup instructions do not promise identical layouts for every language or app version.
Adjust suggestions and autocorrect
Open Settings > Text correction to see the correction and suggestion controls available on your installation. Google describes this area as the place to choose what types of suggestions appear, including suggestions such as next words or emoji. The individual toggles can vary, so use the labels on your screen rather than expecting every Gboard version to show an identical list.

Decide which behavior you want: suggestions you can choose manually, or automatic replacement as you type. If you often dislike replacements but still want suggestions, turn off the automatic behavior if that option is shown while leaving useful suggestions enabled. If you prefer a cleaner keyboard with fewer prompts, disable the suggestion types you do not use.
Some Google-documented suggestion features have limited availability. The cited help page says its suggestions feature is available on Pixel 4a and later for supported languages—English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. Proofread and Smart Compose have additional US-English limits. These are the limits stated on Google’s help page, not a guarantee that every feature or toggle is available on every device. Add names and other personal words to Gboard’s dictionary
For a name, place, or specialist term Gboard repeatedly flags, type the word and tap it when it appears with a red underline. Choose Add to dictionary. That gives Gboard a way to recognize the word instead of treating it as an error.
For more deliberate entries or shortcuts, Tom Pritchard’s June 28, 2026 walkthrough describes the path Settings > Dictionary > Personal Dictionary > language, where an entry can include a word and an optional shortcut. Menu names and availability may differ by Gboard version; consult the Tom’s Guide walkthrough if that route matches your app.

Undo an autocorrect you did not want
If Gboard replaces a word incorrectly, tap Backspace to undo the correction, as Google recommends. Then either choose the intended suggestion or type the word again. If the same legitimate word keeps being changed, add it to the dictionary using the steps above.
Optional layout change: hide punctuation keys
Android Central reported that Gboard version 16.0 added Preferences toggles to hide the comma and period keys. This is a version-specific report, not a universal setting: check Settings > Preferences on your installed app to see whether those options exist. Hiding the keys can simplify the bottom row, but may add friction if you frequently type punctuation. See the Android Central report.

What to expect from autocorrect
Gboard’s launch announcement described machine learning as assisting with Glide Typing, predictions, and autocorrections. That was a product statement by Gboard Product Manager Reena Lee in Google’s December 16, 2016 launch post; it is not a measured claim about how many errors today’s autocorrect prevents. Individual corrections can also depend on the word, language, and available settings. The practical response to an unwanted change is to undo it, then add recurring personal vocabulary where appropriate. Read the Google launch post.
