To customize Camera Control, go to Settings > Camera > Camera Control > Customize. Choose the camera settings you want in its on-screen overlay, then arrange them in the order you prefer. Camera Control is available on iPhone 16 and later models, according to Apple Support.
Choose which settings appear in the Camera Control overlay
- Open Settings.
- Tap Camera, then Camera Control.
- Tap Customize.
- Select the settings you want available in the overlay and change their order.
- Open Camera using Camera Control. Lightly press the control twice to show the overlay for the current camera mode.
- Slide a finger on the control to move through the available settings. Lightly press to select one, then slide to adjust it.
Apple says the selected setting is saved and appears the next time you open the overlay. The controls available can vary by camera mode. See Apple’s Camera Control guide for the documented steps.
What the overlay settings do
- Exposure: Brighten or darken the scene.
- Depth: Adjust background depth of field and turn on Portrait mode if needed.
- Zoom: Adjust magnification.
- Cameras: Switch cameras, including the front-facing camera.
- Styles: Change Photographic Style.
- Tone: Adjust the mood of the image.
For capture adjustments, consider Exposure, Depth, Zoom, and Cameras. For the image’s look, choose Styles or Tone. The overlay may not offer every setting in every camera mode.
Change how Camera opens
To choose whether a single or double click opens Camera, go to Settings > Camera > Camera Control and select Single Click or Double Click.

You can also set Camera Control to open Camera, Code Scanner, Magnifier, no app, or a favorite third-party camera app. Available choices and labels can depend on your installed software and apps. Apple documents app assignment in its guide to opening another app with Camera Control.
Adjust press and swipe gestures
For gesture and sensitivity options, open Settings > Accessibility > Camera Control. Apple documents settings to turn Camera Control off, enable or disable the light-press gesture and swipe, adjust the force needed for a light press, and change the speed required for a double light press. These options can help if the control is difficult to trigger or responds when you do not intend it to. See Apple’s Camera Control accessibility settings.

Lock focus and exposure
To lock focus and exposure with Camera Control, first enable Lock Focus and Exposure at Settings > Camera > Camera Control. In Camera, lightly press and hold the control until AE/AF Lock appears. Keep your finger on the control to maintain the lock; releasing it turns the lock off. Apple describes this in its Camera Control instructions.

Which setting should you change?
- Want different tools in the overlay? Change the selections and order under Customize.
- Want Camera to open with fewer clicks? Choose Single Click or Double Click in Camera Control settings.
- Having trouble with a press or swipe? Adjust the gesture, force, or double-press speed in Accessibility settings.
- Want Camera Control to launch a different app? Assign an available app in its Camera Control settings.
