To crossfade songs in a 24/7 YouTube music radio stream, apply the transition in the playlist playout software—before the audio reaches the encoder that sends your program to YouTube Live. Liquidsoap’s playlist tools include a crossfade operator and a smart-crossfade example. Crossfading handles the handoff between tracks; it does not provide music rights or prevent YouTube from interrupting a stream over third-party content.
What a crossfade does—and where it belongs
A crossfade overlaps the end of one song with the start of the next: the outgoing track fades down as the incoming track fades up. Put that operation in the software that plays and sequences the songs, upstream of the streaming encoder. The encoder then sends the resulting continuous program feed to YouTube Live.

Liquidsoap’s official documentation describes a built-in crossfade operator, including a smart transition that can crossfade or fade passages when appropriate and use a simpler sequence when overlapping them would mask a track. A YouTube stream and a YouTube broadcast are distinct resources: the liveStream is the incoming audio-video feed, while the liveBroadcast is the event viewers watch. Crossfading changes the program before it is encoded; it does not change YouTube’s broadcast setup. Google explains the distinction in Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.

Set up a crossfaded playlist for YouTube Live

Prepare a playlist of music you can broadcast
Use recordings whose rights cover the live broadcast and any replay or archive you intend to keep. If you use licensed third-party music, coordinate with the label or distributor and ask whether the channel needs to be added to the rights holder’s Content ID allowlist. YouTube warns that a live stream may be interrupted even when the content is licensed if the channel is not allowlisted. Its current guidance is in Copyright issues with live streams.

Choose playlist playout software that supports track-level transitions
Liquidsoap is one documented option: its quickstart shows playlist playback wrapped in
crossfade. Check the documentation for the version you install and its dependencies. The current development documentation identifies the 2.5.x series; its documented automatic method has been integrated since 2.2.5 when FFmpeg bindings are enabled. Another playout system can work if it actually overlaps consecutive tracks and can supply a continuous program feed to your encoder. Do not assume an OBS scene transition crossfades songs in a separate playlist: a scene transition changes scenes, while the playlist’s playout layer owns the track handoff.

Configure the transition and listen to representative tracks
Start with the playout software’s documented crossfade or smart-crossfade behavior, then audition transitions from your own playlist. Large differences in loudness, arrangement, or the way tracks end and begin can make an overlap sound muddy or awkward. Adjust transition duration or rules to suit the material; a smart transition may choose a fade or a non-overlapping sequence when two passages would mask one another.

Route the playout output to an encoder
Keep the playout service running and feed its output into an encoder configured for YouTube Live. Ensure the encoder sends the audio-video feed expected by your chosen workflow; some workflows require a visual signal as well as audio. Use YouTube Live Control Room for the current stream settings, and check YouTube’s broadcast and stream resource documentation if you are managing the connection through the API.

Choose an ingest protocol for a reason
HLS is an optional YouTube ingest protocol, not a crossfade feature. If you choose HLS, YouTube’s HLS ingestion setup instructions specify 1–4 second segment durations, TS format, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and supported audio codecs. YouTube also says HLS has higher latency than RTMP. The crossfade still belongs in the playout layer, regardless of which supported ingest protocol you use.

Monitor the live program and copyright status
Watch Live Control Room and YouTube Studio for warnings or interruptions. YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content and may be interrupted when such content is identified. A clean-sounding transition cannot resolve a rights claim; follow YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and coordinate with the relevant rights holder where needed.

Check the setup before leaving it unattended
- Track overlap: Confirm that transitions occur between playlist tracks, not merely between visual scenes.
- Continuous output: Confirm that the playout service feeds the encoder continuously and that the encoder is connected to the intended YouTube stream.
- Sound: Listen for abrupt gaps, clipped starts, or muddy overlaps across different styles and loudness levels.
- Rights: Check YouTube Studio and Live Control Room for claims or warnings, and verify any necessary Content ID allowlisting with the rights holder.
- Recovery and intervention: Decide how you will notice and respond if a track, playout source, encoder, or YouTube connection fails. The available documentation establishes the roles of playout and broadcast components; it does not establish a universal recovery configuration.
