Set a post thumbnail by assigning a Featured image in the post editor. Cropping that image is a separate task: use Media Library → Edit Image when you need to change generated image sizes, or use the Image block’s Crop control when adjusting an image inside a block. Check the published post and archive cards afterward, because the active theme—not WordPress’s default thumbnail setting alone—determines the size and crop visitors see.
How do I change the thumbnail on a WordPress post?
- Open the post in the WordPress editor.
- Click the Settings (gear) icon if the sidebar is hidden.
- Under Featured image, click Set featured image.
- Choose an existing Media Library item or upload a file, then confirm Set featured image.
- Use Replace to choose a different image or Remove to clear the assignment.
WordPress documentation uses both “post thumbnail” and “featured image.” They refer to the image assigned to the post; the theme decides where that image appears, such as on the post page, a category archive, or a related-post card.
How do I crop a WordPress featured image in the Media Library?
This workflow edits a media item and can target the image sizes WordPress generated from the upload.
- Go to Media → Library and open the image.
- Choose Edit Image.
- Drag across the part of the picture you want to keep. You can also enter an aspect ratio or a pixel-based selection.
- Apply the crop. The editor also provides rotation, horizontal and vertical flip, undo/redo, and proportional scaling down.
- When saving, select whether the change applies to all image sizes, thumbnail only, or all sizes except thumbnail.
The Media Library editor can restore the original upload, which is useful if a crop removes an important subject or you later need a different composition.

How do I crop an image with the block editor?
Use this method when the image is being adjusted in an Image block rather than when you need to manage all generated thumbnail variants.
- Select the Image block in the post or page.
- Click Crop in the block toolbar.
- Choose freeform cropping or an aspect-ratio preset, then adjust zoom, rotation, straightening, or flip as needed.
- Save the edit from the media controls.
WordPress describes this flow as saving an edited version as a new image while retaining the original in the Media Library. The save behavior and available controls differ from the Media Library editor, so use the context that matches your goal.

Media Library editor or Image block: which should you use?

What size should a WordPress featured image be?
There is no single correct featured-image dimension for every WordPress site. WordPress’s Edit Media documentation states that the default thumbnail is 150 × 150 pixels, cropped as a square. That is the default thumbnail setting, not a universal requirement for a theme’s featured-image area.
To see the defaults and adjust them, open Settings → Media. The Thumbnail section provides width and height fields and a Crop thumbnail to exact dimensions option. The documented exact-crop feature requires PHP GD. Medium and Large image sizes have their own maximum width and height fields.

Your active theme can register additional image sizes, including hard crops with a specified width and height. Developers can also set crop positions such as left, center, or right and top, center, or bottom. Therefore, the right source dimensions depend on the theme’s templates and the layout where the image is displayed. Follow the theme’s image guidance when available, then preview the post and its archive or card views.

- The theme uses a custom image size. A theme may request a hard-cropped variant instead of displaying the full upload.
- The crop position favors a focal area. Registered positions can place the crop at the left, center, right, top, or bottom, which may remove a face, logo, or product detail elsewhere in the frame.
- You edited one size but the template uses another. A Media Library edit saved for the thumbnail does not necessarily change every generated size.
- The layout has a fixed aspect ratio. A card or archive slot can crop an image differently from the single-post view.
After editing, clear any caching layer your site uses if the old image remains visible, then inspect the actual front-end locations where the featured image is rendered. If the subject is still cut off, recrop with more surrounding space or choose a focal composition that matches the theme’s crop position.

How to preserve the subject when preparing a thumbnail
- Identify every place the theme displays the featured image, including archives, search results, and related-post cards.
- Choose a source image with enough space around faces, text, or products to tolerate a hard crop.
- Use an aspect ratio matching the tightest visible slot when the theme documents one.
- Keep important details away from extreme edges unless the theme’s crop position is known.
- Preview at the actual card size as well as on the single-post page before publishing.
What if the crop controls or exact thumbnail crop do not work?
- Confirm you are editing the intended image: the post’s Featured image assignment and the Media Library item are separate steps.
- If the exact-dimension option on Settings → Media is unavailable or fails, note that WordPress documents PHP GD as a requirement for that feature; this alone does not diagnose every server, permission, or caching problem.
- Check the save scope in the Media Library editor so you do not unintentionally overwrite all generated sizes.
- Use the block editor’s Crop tool when you only need a block-level adjustment, and remember that it creates an edited version while retaining the original.
- Inspect the active theme’s documentation and the front end. A correct editor crop can still look different when a template requests another registered size.
Quick checklist before publishing
- The intended image is assigned under Featured image.
- The crop keeps the important subject visible at the theme’s card ratio.
- You selected the correct Media Library save scope, or intentionally created a separate block-edited version.
- The post page and at least one archive or card layout have been previewed.
- The original upload remains available if you may need another crop.
