Make a 16:9 image for a regular YouTube video, export it as JPG or PNG, then upload it from the video’s thumbnail controls in YouTube Studio and save. For a custom Shorts thumbnail, design vertically at 9:16; YouTube currently requires you to add it in Studio on a computer. Canva and Adobe Express both offer thumbnail templates and editing tools, but the better fit depends on the workflow and features you need.
Choose the right canvas for your video
Start by matching the thumbnail to where it will be used. YouTube currently recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels for a regular video thumbnail, with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a minimum width of 640 pixels. For Shorts, it recommends 2160 × 3840 pixels, a 9:16 ratio and a minimum height of 640 pixels. YouTube’s Help page is undated; these specifications were verified on September 29, 2026. Check YouTube’s current thumbnail guidance before publishing, since platform requirements can change.
Both Canva and Adobe Express describe a 1280 × 720-pixel thumbnail canvas. That is a 16:9 layout suitable for a regular video, but smaller than YouTube’s current recommended dimensions. If your selected app offers larger export dimensions, use them while preserving the ratio. For a Short, choose a vertical 9:16 canvas rather than stretching a landscape design.
Make the thumbnail in Canva or Adobe Express
Canva
- Open Canva’s YouTube thumbnail maker and choose a thumbnail design or begin with a snapshot from your video.
- Use a clear still or photo that accurately represents the video. Canva describes adjusting brightness and contrast, and adding text, fonts, filters, icons, photos or illustrations.
- Keep the main subject and any essential words easy to see at a glance. When the design is ready, download it as JPEG or PNG.
Canva’s maker page describes the tool as free, but that does not establish that every asset or feature is free. Check the current terms for any element you choose to use.

Adobe Express
- Open Adobe Express’s YouTube thumbnail maker. Find a template by topic, niche or aesthetic, or start from a blank canvas. Adobe lists 1280 × 720 pixels as the default thumbnail canvas.
- Upload an image that reflects the video, then add text or graphics. Adobe also describes a background-removal tool and the option to save a design as a reusable template.
- Keep the message brief and readable. Adobe recommends three to five words, high contrast and avoiding the lower-left area, where YouTube displays a duration badge. Those are Adobe design suggestions, not YouTube rules or a guarantee of stronger performance.
Adobe says its free plan includes core editing tools and thousands of free templates. Whether a particular asset or feature requires a paid plan can vary, so check Adobe’s current plan details before relying on it.

Choose based on the templates you like, the editing tools you need, whether you want reusable designs for consistent branding, and whether you work in a browser or on a phone. If you need collaboration or a particular asset, confirm that it is available on your chosen plan. Both vendors describe a JPEG or PNG workflow; neither set of maker-page details establishes that one is universally better. Pricing, feature tiers and asset licensing can change.
Design a clear, accurate image
- Use a truthful focal image. A video still, a subject photo or another image can work if it accurately represents the video. Do not imply content the video does not contain.
- Keep the hierarchy simple. Give the main subject visual priority, then add a short message only if it helps explain what the viewer will see. Check that text remains legible when the image is viewed small.
- Leave room for interface overlays. YouTube places a duration badge in the lower-left area of video thumbnails. Adobe recommends keeping important text away from it.
- Follow YouTube’s rules. Custom thumbnails must comply with YouTube Community Guidelines. YouTube identifies nudity or sexually provocative content, hate speech, violence and harmful or dangerous content as grounds for rejection and a strike.
- Do not treat a design tip as a performance promise. Canva and Adobe describe tools and recommendations; the available sources do not establish that a particular app, layout or wording will increase clicks or views.
Export to a format and size YouTube accepts
Export as JPG or PNG. The maximum file size depends on the upload context: YouTube lists a 2 MB limit for mobile video thumbnails and a 50 MB limit for desktop video, Shorts and podcast thumbnails. Before uploading, inspect the saved file and confirm its orientation, dimensions and file size. If you created a regular-video image in a 1280 × 720 default canvas, it meets the stated minimum width but not YouTube’s recommended 3840 × 2160 dimensions. If you designed for a Short, check that the exported image is vertical rather than a 16:9 landscape image.

Regular video on a computer
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the video you want to edit.
- In the video’s thumbnail controls, choose the option to upload a thumbnail.
- Select the exported JPG or PNG file.
- Save the video details.
YouTube requires a verified account to use custom thumbnails. YouTube’s official instructions are at its video-thumbnail Help page.
Regular video in the YouTube Studio Android app
- Open Content and select the video.
- Tap Edit, then Edit thumbnail.
- Choose Custom thumbnail, select the image on your device and save.

Custom thumbnail for a Short
YouTube currently says custom Shorts thumbnails are added in YouTube Studio on a computer, and the account must be verified. There is also a display caveat: when a vertical video uses a 16:9 custom thumbnail, YouTube may show an automatically generated 4:5 image on mobile Home, Explore and Subscriptions pages. The custom thumbnail can still appear in the watch feed, watch history and on non-mobile platforms. A vertical 9:16 design is the recommended starting canvas, but check how the result appears in the surfaces where viewers may encounter it.

The custom-thumbnail option is missing
Check that the account is verified. For a Short, use YouTube Studio on a computer; YouTube’s current custom Shorts-thumbnail instructions specify that route.
YouTube rejects the file
Confirm that it is JPG or PNG, within the file-size limit for your upload device and content type, and meets the relevant minimum dimension. Review it against YouTube Community Guidelines as well.

The Short shows a different thumbnail on mobile
For a vertical video with a 16:9 custom thumbnail, YouTube may substitute an auto-generated 4:5 image on mobile Home, Explore and Subscriptions pages. This is a documented display behavior, not necessarily a failed upload.
You have reached a daily limit
YouTube says daily thumbnail limits vary by country or region and channel history. If Studio reports that you have reached the limit, YouTube advises trying again in 24 hours.
