The fastest way to create a working Jenkins Pipeline is to create a Pipeline job and run a short Declarative Jenkinsfile. The smallest useful definition has an agent, a stages block, one named stage, and a steps block. An echo step gives you an immediate, visible result in the build console.
For a disposable experiment, enter the script directly in Jenkins. For an application that will be maintained, put the Jenkinsfile in your Git repository and configure Jenkins to load it from source control.
What you need before creating a Pipeline
- A Jenkins 2.x-or-later controller.
- Permission to create jobs and run builds.
- At least one usable agent (also called a node) with an executor. The Pipeline’s
agentdetermines where Jenkins allocates the workspace and runs the steps. - The Pipeline plugin and its dependencies. The post-install suggested-plugin setup normally includes Pipeline, but plugin sets and versions differ, so inspect Manage Jenkins > Plugins on your controller rather than assuming a particular screen.
- For a repository-backed example, access to the repository and the appropriate source-control plugin. Git support requires the Git plugin, which is included by default in many installations.
Jenkins Pipelines are implemented through plugins. A Jenkinsfile is the usual file-based definition of that Pipeline. This guide starts with Declarative Pipeline syntax because its structure is intentionally simplified and opinionated. Scripted Pipeline, a Groovy-based alternative, remains available when you need its different programming style or more dynamic control.
Choose where the Pipeline definition lives
| Setup | Where the script is stored | Best use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pipeline script | Inside the Jenkins job configuration | A quick, throwaway experiment | Changes are not reviewed or versioned with the application. |
| Pipeline script from SCM | In a repository, usually as Jenkinsfile |
Projects, teams, and repeatable delivery | Requires repository and credential configuration. |
Use the SCM route for real work. Keeping the Jenkinsfile beside the application gives the team reviewable changes, repository history, an audit trail, and one shared definition of how the project is built. The inline route is still useful for proving that an installation can execute a Pipeline before you connect source control.

Create a first Pipeline in the Jenkins UI
1. Create the job
- Open the Jenkins dashboard.
- Select New Item.
- Enter a project name that is unique on this controller.
- Select Pipeline, then choose OK.
2. Enter an inline script
- On the job configuration page, find the Pipeline section.
- Set Definition to Pipeline script.
- Paste the following complete Declarative Pipeline:
pipeline {
agent any
stages {
stage('Hello') {
steps {
echo 'Hello world!'
}
}
}
}
- Click Save.
- On the job page, click Build Now.
- Open the new build number and select Console Output.
A successful run allocates an executor and workspace, enters the Hello stage, prints Hello world!, and finishes with a success result. The exact surrounding log lines depend on your Jenkins version and agent.
Understand the minimal Jenkinsfile
pipeline {}
This outer block declares a Declarative Pipeline. Everything Jenkins should execute belongs inside it.
agent any
agent any asks Jenkins to allocate an available executor and workspace on any eligible agent. Without an agent, Jenkins has nowhere to run the steps in this example. Later, you can target a label, container, or a specific execution strategy when your build requires particular tools.
stages {} and stage('Hello')
stages groups the major parts of the workflow. Each stage has a name shown in Jenkins’ build views and should represent a meaningful unit such as Build, Test, or Deploy.
steps {} and echo
steps contains the actions Jenkins executes in that stage. The built-in echo step writes text to the console log, making it a safe first test before you introduce compilers, package managers, credentials, or deployment commands.
Move the Jenkinsfile into Git
1. Add the file to the repository
Create a plain-text file named Jenkinsfile at the repository root and commit the same pipeline:

pipeline {
agent any
stages {
stage('Hello') {
steps {
echo 'Hello world!'
}
}
}
}
You may place the file in a subdirectory, but then Jenkins must be told its relative path.
2. Point the job at source control
- Open the Pipeline job and select Configure.
- In the Pipeline section, set Definition to Pipeline script from SCM.
- Choose the SCM type, such as Git.
- Enter the repository URL and select credentials if the repository is private.
- Choose the branch or ref Jenkins should build.
- Leave Script Path as
Jenkinsfilewhen the file is at the repository root. For another location, enter its path relative to the repository root, such asci/Jenkinsfile. - Save the job and select Build Now.
Jenkins checks out the configured revision, reads the script at the specified path, and then executes it. If the file is renamed, moved, or committed on a different branch, update the job configuration or branch selection accordingly.

Once the hello run works, expand the file incrementally so a failure has a clear cause:
pipeline {
agent any
stages {
stage('Checkout') {
steps {
checkout scm
}
}
stage('Build') {
steps {
echo 'Replace this with your project build command'
}
}
stage('Test') {
steps {
echo 'Replace this with your test command'
}
}
}
}
Use commands appropriate for the tools installed on the selected agent. Do not assume that a controller or agent has a compiler, Node.js, Python, Java, Docker, or a package manager available. Install and pin required tools through your team’s supported approach, or select an agent label that provides them. Keep credentials out of the Jenkinsfile’s plain text; use Jenkins credential bindings and the relevant plugin steps when you introduce authenticated services.
Use Jenkins’ built-in syntax help
Open ${YOUR_JENKINS_URL}/pipeline-syntax on your controller. The Snippet Generator lists steps exposed by plugins installed on that specific controller, so its examples reflect your actual environment instead of a different plugin version. The same area documents the Declarative Directive Generator and Global Variable Reference. Use these tools for plugin-specific checkout, credentials, notifications, and post-build behavior rather than guessing step names or arguments.
Declarative versus Scripted Pipeline
| Question | Declarative | Scripted |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner readability | Structured, opinionated blocks that are easy to scan. | Groovy-like code with more programming freedom. |
| First-pipeline setup | Lower burden; the required shape is explicit. | Requires comfort with Groovy control flow and Jenkins’ scripted model. |
| When to consider it | Most build, test, and deployment workflows. | Complex dynamic logic that does not fit comfortably in Declarative syntax. |
Both syntaxes are valid. Starting Declaratively does not prevent a later migration or the use of scripted sections where Jenkins supports them.

Blue Ocean and current visualization choices
Do not use Blue Ocean as the creation path for a new tutorial. Jenkins documentation states that Blue Ocean has been deprecated since July 2026 and will receive no further security fixes or functionality updates. Use the regular Jenkins job configuration and build pages instead. For visual stage history, the actively maintained Pipeline Graph View plugin is identified by Jenkins as an option; Pipeline: Stage View is another alternative. Plugin availability and screens depend on what your controller has installed.
Troubleshoot the first run
“No nodes” or “There are no agents”
Cause: Jenkins cannot allocate an executor for agent any.
Fix: Inspect the node and cloud configuration, bring an agent online, or adjust the agent selection to a label that has an online executor. Confirm that the agent has a writable workspace.
“Invalid Jenkinsfile” or a syntax error
Cause: Braces, quotes, indentation-sensitive plugin arguments, or Declarative structure are malformed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Fix: Compare the file with the minimal example, validate the braces, and remove newly added stages until the hello pipeline parses. The Pipeline Syntax page can generate correctly shaped plugin snippets.
“No such DSL method”
Cause: The step comes from a plugin that is not installed, is disabled, or exposes a different step name.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Fix: Check Manage Jenkins > Plugins, then use the controller’s Snippet Generator. Do not copy a step from documentation for a plugin version your controller does not have.
The Jenkinsfile is not found
Cause: The Script Path does not match the committed file, or the selected branch does not contain it.
Fix: Verify the repository URL, branch/ref, case-sensitive path, and commit. Use Jenkinsfile only when the file is at the repository root.
Git checkout fails
Cause: Invalid credentials, an inaccessible repository URL, missing Git support, or an agent without the required Git executable.
Fix: Test repository access with the selected credential, confirm the Git plugin is installed, and inspect the agent log for the executable and network error. Keep secrets in Jenkins credentials rather than embedding them in the URL or file.
The build hangs or times out
Cause: A command is waiting for input, the agent cannot reach a dependency, or the job is queued for an unavailable executor.

Operational checklist for a dependable first Pipeline
- Run the minimal hello job before adding build tools.
- Move the Jenkinsfile into source control before treating it as a project workflow.
- Confirm the selected agent has the executor, workspace permissions, and required tools.
- Keep the Script Path aligned with the repository and branch.
- Generate plugin-specific snippets from your own controller.
- Store secrets in Jenkins credentials, not in source control.
- Add stages incrementally so each failure has a narrow diagnostic scope.
- Record the Jenkins and plugin versions when troubleshooting behavior that differs between controllers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I create a Jenkins Pipeline without a Jenkinsfile?
Yes. Select Pipeline script and store the Declarative script in the job configuration. A Jenkinsfile is the conventional source-controlled form, not a requirement for an inline experiment.
Where should the Jenkinsfile be placed?
The default Script Path expects a file named Jenkinsfile at the repository root. A file elsewhere works when you enter its repository-relative path in Script Path.
What does agent any mean?
It lets Jenkins choose any eligible online agent with an available executor and workspace. Use a label or another agent strategy when the workflow needs a specific environment.
Why does the same Pipeline behave differently on two Jenkins servers?
Pipelines depend on the controller’s installed plugins, plugin versions, agents, tools, credentials, and configuration. Use each controller’s Pipeline Syntax page and inspect its plugin and node setup.
