1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAdd each thumbnail image to your site’s published files, then reference it from the matching project card. The main detail to get right is the image URL: a GitHub Pages project site lives under its repository name, so a root-relative URL can point to the wrong place. This guide shows a plain-HTML approach and a Jekyll option, plus how to check that the published images load.
1. Add thumbnail images to the site
Choose a representative image for each project, such as a screenshot or an illustration. Put the files in the configured GitHub Pages publishing source so they are deployed with the rest of the site. GitHub Pages can publish static files directly or build a site from supported source files; the files retain the publishing source’s directory structure. See GitHub’s overview of GitHub Pages and site creation documentation.
For example, a simple site might use this layout:
project-directory/
index.html
assets/
thumbnails/
project-one.jpg
project-two.png
css/
style.css
This is an example organization, not a GitHub requirement. Use filenames that make it easy to match an image to its project, and include the images in the branch or folder configured as the publishing source.
2. Add an image to each project card
Plain HTML
Put an image in the card and link the card or image to the project. Use descriptive alt text so the image’s relevant information is available to people using assistive technology or when the image cannot load.

The example uses a relative image path. Its resolution depends on the page URL: from a page in a nested directory, a relative path may need to move up directories. GitHub’s guidance on README image paths covers relative paths in rendered Markdown; for a website, verify the URL in the actual page context.
Jekyll
If the directory is a Jekyll site, keep the project data and card markup in the page or layout structure that suits the site. Jekyll pages can use front matter to specify metadata and a layout. GitHub’s instructions explain adding content with Jekyll and previewing a site locally.

For a project site whose repository name is configured as the Jekyll baseurl, a template can build an asset path with the relative_url filter:
<img src="{{ '/assets/thumbnails/project-one.jpg' | relative_url }}"
alt="Screenshot of Project One's dashboard">
This assumes the build environment supports that Jekyll filter and that baseurl is configured for the repository subpath. See GitHub’s documentation on baseurl for sites hosted in a subdirectory; confirm the generated image URL on your own published site.

3. Check the path on the published project site
A user or organization site is published at the account’s site URL, while a project site is served below a repository-name path. That difference can break assets when code assumes the site starts at the domain root. In particular, /assets/thumbnails/project-one.jpg starts at the host root; it may not resolve beneath a project repository’s path.
- Open the published project page and inspect the thumbnail’s image URL, or open that URL directly in a browser.
- Check that the URL includes the repository path when the project site is hosted beneath one.
- If the image is missing, verify the capitalization and spelling of the filename and directory, then confirm the image is present in the configured publishing source.
- For Jekyll, check the configured
baseurland inspect the generated HTML to see whether the filter produced the intended URL.
GitHub’s Pages setup documentation covers the publishing source and the project-site location; its Jekyll guidance explains the subdirectory configuration. A local preview is useful for checking layout, but test the final URL after publishing because the deployed site has the actual repository path.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
4. Style thumbnails for a consistent directory
The markup supplies the image and text; CSS controls how cards fit the directory. For example, this CSS keeps thumbnails at a consistent display height while cropping images as needed:
.project-card img {
display: block;
width: 100%;
aspect-ratio: 16 / 9;
object-fit: cover;
}
.project-card {
display: block;
text-decoration: none;
}
Use a different aspect ratio or object-fit setting if cropping would hide important information. Keep the alt text specific to what the image communicates; don’t use the filename as a substitute.

5. Publish and maintain the directory
Commit the page changes and image files to the configured publishing source. GitHub Pages can deploy from a branch and folder, or through a GitHub Actions workflow. GitHub currently recommends Actions for deployment; see the Pages overview and the site creation guide for publishing options.
When adding another project, add its image to the same image directory, add a card with a matching path and useful alt text, then verify the deployed image URL. If you change the asset folder or a filename, update every reference to it.
6. Keep website thumbnails separate from repository social previews
An in-page thumbnail is an image element in your website’s markup. A repository social preview is a separate image configured in the repository’s settings, used when the repository link is shared on social platforms. GitHub’s social preview documentation recommends PNG, JPG, or GIF files under 1 MB, at least 640 × 320 pixels, with 1280 × 640 pixels giving the best display. Those are recommendations for the repository social preview, not required dimensions for project cards on your site.

If you need to create thumbnail images from the project sites themselves, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot with one GET request. For example, save a WebP shot of a project page like this:
Quick Recap
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Replace the example URL with the page you want to capture. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API parameters and setup. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. It also provides an MCP server for AI agents to take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Learn about ScreenshotNeo or sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card.
Troubleshooting
- The image works locally but not on GitHub Pages: Check whether the deployed URL needs the repository path. A root-relative path beginning with
/starts at the host root; use an appropriate relative path or a Jekyll URL filter with the correctbaseurl. - The image URL returns a missing-file error: Check the filename’s spelling and capitalization, the directory path, and whether the file is included in the configured publishing source.
- The image appears on one page but not another: A relative URL is resolved from the current page location. Adjust the relative path for the nested page or generate it with the site’s base URL mechanism.
- The thumbnail is cropped unexpectedly: Check the CSS aspect ratio and
object-fitbehavior. Use a different ratio or display the full image if cropping removes important details. - The Jekyll template outputs an unprocessed expression: Confirm the page is being built by Jekyll, the relevant filter is supported by the build environment, and the template is in a file processed by Jekyll.
