To choose the image that appears when someone shares your web page, add Open Graph metadata to that page’s HTML <head>, point og:image to a publicly accessible image, and check the published URL with the destination platform’s inspection tool. The browser favicon does not normally determine a social link preview. The network fetching the page decides how to display its metadata, image, crop, and cached version.

What controls a website link preview?

A social link preview is assembled when a platform’s crawler fetches a shared URL and reads information from the page. The image is usually selected using the Open Graph property og:image; the title, description, and canonical page address come from other metadata. The platform may then crop, resize, compress, or cache the result. You provide metadata and a suitable image, but you cannot guarantee that every service will display them identically.

This is different from a browser bookmark or a link shown in a site’s own interface. Those may use a favicon or other site-specific data. If you want a chosen thumbnail beside a URL shared on a social network or messaging service, Open Graph tags are the practical starting point.

Create an image that survives different crops

Make a dedicated share image for the page or for a group of related pages. Use a clear subject and keep text, logos, and other essential details away from the outer edges: platforms may crop the image differently, particularly when a square or portrait asset is shown in a landscape preview. A central safe area makes the design more resilient, but preview it on the destination platforms you care about.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

There is no single size established here as perfect for every network. LinkedIn’s help guidance for its sharing module specifies a minimum of 1200 × 627 pixels, recommends a 1.91:1 ratio, and sets a 5 MB maximum. It says images less than 401 pixels wide display as thumbnails and cautions that square and vertical images may be cropped when shared organically. Recheck LinkedIn’s current guidance when publishing because platform requirements can change.

HubSpot’s June 20, 2026 documentation gives 1.91:1 as its recommended ratio for Facebook and LinkedIn landscape images and X link featured images. Those are HubSpot’s recommendations, not a universal crawler specification. Its listed upload limits—Facebook 8 MB, X 5 MB (15 MB for GIFs), and LinkedIn 10 MB—apply in HubSpot’s social publishing context; do not treat them as universal limits for images fetched from a website. HubSpot also notes that platform compression can affect clarity.

Add Open Graph metadata to the page

The Open Graph Protocol identifies four required properties for every page: og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url. Add a description for useful preview text and image alt text to describe the visual. Put the tags in the page’s HTML <head>, make them accurate for that page, and use absolute URLs.

<head>
  <meta property="og:type" content="website">
  <meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/page">
  <meta property="og:title" content="Page title">
  <meta property="og:description" content="A short description of the page.">
  <meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/page-share.jpg">
  <meta property="og:image:alt" content="Description of the share image">
  <meta property="og:image:width" content="1200">
  <meta property="og:image:height" content="630">
  <meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image">
</head>

Replace the example URLs, text, and dimensions with values for the real page and image. The width and height properties describe the image file; they do not resize it. Keep the og:url value aligned with the page’s canonical URL so crawlers and visitors are referring to the same page.

The twitter:card line is a platform-specific addition included in HubSpot’s example. The sources available for this article do not establish current first-party X behavior in detail, so do not assume that this tag or one image specification guarantees a particular card on X or another service.

Publish the metadata where crawlers can read it

  1. Inspect the initial HTML response. Confirm that the tags appear in the served page’s <head>, not only in a DOM created later by client-side JavaScript. A crawler that reads the initial HTML may not see metadata inserted after rendering. If your framework renders pages dynamically, verify the HTML actually sent for the shared URL.
  2. Check access to both resources. The page and image should load without authentication, a blocked hotlink, or a crawler-denying server rule. Confirm that og:image is an absolute URL and returns the intended image rather than an error page or redirect to a login.
  3. Review crawl restrictions. Check robots.txt and relevant security rules for restrictions that prevent social crawlers from fetching the page or image. HubSpot’s guidance notes that social networks scan metadata and robots.txt; it gives Facebook and X crawler user-agent examples and recommends LinkedIn Post Inspector for checking LinkedIn crawl access.
  4. Deploy, then inspect the exact shared URL. Use the destination platform’s validator or inspector after the page is public. A successful metadata fetch does not control the platform’s final crop or presentation.

Validate the preview on each destination

Test the fully published URL—not merely a local preview or a different URL that redirects to it. The Open Graph Protocol identifies Facebook Object Debugger as its official parser/debugger. HubSpot also points to Facebook’s debugger, X card validation, and LinkedIn Post Inspector. Use the tool for the network where the link will be shared; an inspector can help show what was fetched, but the final display remains platform-controlled.

When a preview is wrong, compare what the inspector fetched with the tags and image you intended to publish. If an old image remains, request a fresh inspection using the platform’s tool where supported. There is no universal cache lifetime established here, so do not promise that a changed preview will update after a fixed number of minutes or hours.

Troubleshoot missing or incorrect thumbnails

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
No image appears The crawler cannot read og:image, the image URL is inaccessible, or the metadata is absent from the initial HTML. Check the served <head>, use an absolute image URL, and test that the image loads publicly without authentication or hotlink restrictions.
The wrong image appears The page has a duplicate or inaccurate image tag, or the platform is using a previously fetched version. Make the intended og:image unique and accurate, publish the change, then request a fresh inspection where the platform supports it.
The image is cropped badly The destination uses a different crop or presentation from the one you designed for. Move important content toward the center, check the destination’s current image guidance, and inspect the actual shared URL on that service.
The preview title or description is stale The crawler read older metadata, or the current page sends different metadata than expected. Inspect the published URL and its initial HTML, correct the page-specific tags, and rerun the destination’s inspection tool where available.
Image is soft or colors differ The platform may compress the image or treat embedded color profiles differently. Check the source file’s clarity and profile, then compare the fetched image with the rendered preview. HubSpot notes that compression and color profiles can affect the result.
Preview works for one network but not another Networks have differing recommendations, fetching behavior, and display rules. Validate each destination separately; do not infer that passing one platform’s test guarantees another will accept or display the same image.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server; it can help you capture a page to inspect its visual output, but it does not add Open Graph tags or set a social network’s thumbnail. One GET request captures a URL as an image or PDF. For example, this cURL call saves a WebP screenshot of the page you want to review. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the API details.

Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents—including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients—use screenshot tools. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Frequently Asked Questions

Does changing the favicon change the thumbnail people see when they share my page?

Usually no. For a social share preview, the image is generally selected from page metadata, especially og:image; a favicon serves a different purpose.

Can I guarantee that the same preview appears on every social platform?

No. Platforms control their own fetching, caching, cropping, compression, and presentation. Use appropriate metadata and validate the URL separately on each destination.
