Google Docs does not offer a native control to rotate text inside a table cell. On a computer, you can create a rotated heading as a text box in a drawing, then insert and position that drawing beside or over the table column. It looks vertical, but it remains a movable drawing object—not live text in the cell.
What you can and cannot rotate in Google Docs
Google Docs Editors Community Product Experts say Docs has no native table-cell text-rotation feature. That means there is no Docs table menu or formatting setting to make cell text vertical. The workaround is to rotate a text-box object in a drawing. Google’s drawing instructions for Docs on a computer cover creating and working with drawing objects.
That distinction matters for editing and layout: the heading is not part of the table cell’s text. You select, resize, and move it as a drawing object, and should check its position if the table or page layout changes.
Make a vertical heading with a drawing
- Build the table first. In your document on a computer, create the table and adjust its columns so you can judge where the heading needs to sit.
- Open the drawing editor. Place the cursor near the heading’s intended location, then choose Insert > Drawing > New.
- Add the heading text. In the drawing editor, choose Text Box, draw a box, and type the label.
- Rotate the text box. Select the box and drag its rotation handle until the text is oriented as you want.
- Insert and position it. Click Save and close. In the document, resize or reposition the drawing relative to the table column, then check how it lines up with the cell boundaries.
The result is suitable for a short label or heading when an object overlay is acceptable. If you change table dimensions, margins, or other page layout, inspect the drawing again; it is not anchored as text within the cell.

Choose the right approach for your document
- Use a drawing in Docs when the label needs to appear vertical in a document and you can manage it as a separate object.
- Use Google Sheets if the text must be rotated as actual cell content in a spreadsheet. Google’s spreadsheet formatting help lists rotating text in a cell as a Sheets capability, not a Docs feature.
- Keep text live in a Docs cell if cell-level editing is essential, and use a different layout that does not depend on rotated text; the drawing workaround does not make the heading cell text.
A Docs Editors Community Product Expert cautions that rotated text may not stay rotated when a Sheets table is pasted into Docs. Treat transfer between the two apps as something to verify, not a dependable way to bring cell rotation into a Docs table.
Do not confuse right-to-left settings with rotation
Google Docs has controls for right-to-left paragraph direction and table column order, documented in its right-to-left text help. Those settings address language direction and column ordering; they do not rotate a heading vertically.

Repeat the heading across several columns
For repeated labels, you can copy and paste the inserted drawing, then adjust each copy. A Product Expert described this approach for tear-away tabs in a June 2026 community answer. Because each label is still a drawing object, check the placement of every copy against your table rather than assuming it will align automatically.
