To create a transparent image capture, isolate the subject, preserve an alpha channel, and export to a format that supports transparency—normally PNG. In GIMP or Photoshop, use a selection plus an editable mask, remove or hide the background, then verify the exported file on both light and dark backgrounds. If you are capturing a live game or 3D scene, transparency is a separate capture/compositing setting in OBS, not something an ordinary desktop screenshot automatically preserves.
First decide which kind of transparent capture you need
“Transparent capture” describes two different jobs:

A checkerboard shown by an editor is only a preview of transparent pixels. It is not proof that the exported file contains an alpha channel. The file must be exported with alpha data and then checked independently.
Create a transparent PNG from an existing image
1. Open the image and isolate the subject
Open the source in an editor that supports alpha transparency. Select the object you want to keep, then refine the edge at a useful zoom level. Include hair, soft shadows, glass, and other semi-transparent details only when they belong in the final image.

Use a layer mask instead of erasing pixels when the outline may need adjustment. A mask lets you paint areas in or out repeatedly while leaving the original pixels available. Keep the editor’s native project file until the edge is final.
2. Ensure an alpha channel exists
In GIMP, look in the layer or channel information for Red, Green, Blue, and Alpha. If Alpha is missing, choose Layer → Transparency → Add Alpha Channel. Without that channel, deleting a background can fill the area with a solid color rather than transparent pixels.
Photoshop treats masks as editable grayscale information stored in alpha channels. You can paint or edit the mask, save a selection to a channel, and load that saved selection later when you need to refine or reuse it. This is safer than permanently deleting the background before the selection is satisfactory.
3. Hide or remove the background
- Activate the subject selection or mask.
- Invert the selection if the background, rather than the subject, is selected.
- Hide the background layer or clear the selected background after confirming that an alpha channel is present.
- Check the canvas: the editor should show its checker pattern where pixels are transparent.
Zoom in around the outline. A light fringe usually means background pixels remain; a dark fringe can mean the selection was contracted too far or the original background contaminated edge pixels. Refine the mask rather than repeatedly deleting and restoring pixels.
4. Export with alpha
Export as PNG and choose a pixel format that includes alpha. GIMP’s export options distinguish formats with and without an alpha channel. PNG supports varying transparency values, so soft edges and partially transparent shadows can remain smooth.
GIMP’s documentation notes that PNG8 has only two transparency levels: transparent or opaque. Use a full PNG format when you need antialiased edges, translucent glass, smoke, or a soft shadow. Do not use a palette mode that discards the partial alpha your mask created.
5. Verify the exported file
- Close or hide the working document and reopen the exported PNG.
- Place it over a light background and then a dark background.
- Look for a solid rectangle, an unexpected matte color, or missing soft edges.
If a rectangle appears, check three things in order: the background was actually hidden or removed, the layer had an alpha channel, and the export pixel format included alpha. A checkerboard in the editor cannot compensate for an export that flattened the image.

GIMP workflow in a practical sequence
GIMP is a suitable free-software route when you need a transparent still image:

- Open the source with File → Open.
- Add alpha with Layer → Transparency → Add Alpha Channel if the layer does not already show Alpha.
- Create and refine a selection around the subject. Convert it to a layer mask if you expect revisions.
- Hide the background layer or clear the inverted selection.
- Confirm the checkerboard appears only outside the subject.
- Use File → Export As, choose a filename ending in
.png, and export with an alpha-capable pixel format. - Reopen the PNG and test it over light and dark colors.
For a batch of similar assets, keep the same canvas dimensions and mask convention in the working files. That makes later edge corrections consistent without flattening the originals.
Photoshop workflow: masks and reusable selections
Photoshop’s alpha-channel model is useful when a cutout will be revised. Add a layer mask from the current selection, then paint the mask in grayscale: the mask controls which parts of the layer are visible. Save an important selection to a channel so it can be loaded again after other edits.
Keep the mask editable while checking difficult edges. Once the result is correct, export a PNG with transparency rather than a flattened format. The Photoshop documentation describes how to edit masks and save or load selections; it does not make a mask a substitute for checking the exported file.
Capturing transparency from a live game or 3D program in OBS
Live capture is different from cutting out a screenshot. OBS documents an Allow Transparency option for its Game Capture source. For games and 3D programs that render transparency, the option prevents the source from showing an opaque black background.

- Add a Game Capture source to the scene.
- Select the game or 3D program.
- Enable Allow Transparency when the application supplies transparent regions.
- Composite the source over the destination scene and inspect the result before recording or taking a snapshot.
Game Capture is documented for Windows. It does not turn an ordinary opaque game frame into a cutout; the application itself must provide transparency that OBS can capture.
macOS and Linux
OBS directs macOS users to macOS Screen Capture or Display Capture and Linux users to Window Capture rather than Windows Game Capture. OBS lists macOS Screen Capture for macOS 13 or newer and marks the older Display Capture route as deprecated on macOS 13 and later. These labels are version-sensitive, so check the current OBS help for your installed release before building a production setup.

Use an alpha mask when the source needs compositing
OBS’s Image Mask/Blend filter is separate from Game Capture. In Alpha Mask (Alpha Channel) mode, transparent pixels in the mask remove the corresponding area of the source and opaque pixels preserve it. This is useful when you have a prepared PNG mask and want to shape a live source, but it does not create alpha information that the source never supplied.
Transparency detail, formats, and reversibility
- Partial alpha: Full PNG alpha can preserve antialiased boundaries and translucent pixels.
- Binary transparency: PNG8 provides only transparent or opaque pixels, so soft transitions can become jagged or fully filled.
- Editable work: Masks and saved selections allow later corrections; permanently erased pixels do not.
- Preview versus file: A checkerboard is an editor convention. The exported pixel data determines whether another application sees transparency.
Troubleshooting transparent captures
The exported image has a solid white, black, or colored rectangle
The background may still be visible, the layer may lack an alpha channel, or the export may have used a format without alpha. In GIMP, confirm Alpha is present beside the color channels, hide the background, and export again as an alpha-capable PNG. Reopen the new file rather than judging only the working canvas.
Edges look white or dark after compositing
Residual background pixels are probably embedded in the edge. Return to the mask, zoom in, and paint the contaminated fringe out or restore missing subject pixels. Test against both light and dark backgrounds while refining.
Hair, smoke, or glass became completely solid
Check whether the export used PNG8 or another binary-transparency mode. Those modes cannot represent intermediate alpha values. Export a full PNG format that retains partial alpha.
OBS shows black where the game should be transparent
Verify that the application actually renders transparency and that Allow Transparency is enabled on the Game Capture source. If you are on macOS or Linux, use the capture source OBS documents for that platform; a normal desktop capture does not automatically preserve transparent pixels.
The OBS mask removes the wrong area
In Alpha Mask mode, transparent mask pixels remove the corresponding source region and opaque pixels preserve it. Check the mask’s orientation and alpha channel, then confirm that the mask dimensions and positioning match the source.

Some viewers display a checkerboard for alpha while others composite against a default color. Inspect the file over deliberately chosen light and dark backgrounds and confirm that the receiving application supports PNG alpha.

Performance and reliability considerations
For still images, preserve the native project and mask until approval, then export the delivery PNG. This avoids quality loss from repeated flattening and makes corrections predictable. For live scenes, test the exact game, operating system, and OBS source together: capture-source support and menu labels vary by platform and OBS version.
Do not assume that an application window with a transparent-looking interface will produce transparent desktop screenshots. The reviewed OBS documentation covers specific capture sources and compositing controls, not a universal operating-system method for exporting arbitrary windows with alpha.
