To create a traffic time-lapse with browser automation, schedule a fixed map view, capture screenshots or browser video at defined intervals, then assemble the approved captures in a video editor. Playwright can automate the browser capture, but it does not supply historical traffic data, validate traffic measurements, or grant permission to reuse map content. Your data source, sampling plan, and publication rights must be decided separately.
What the finished workflow looks like
- Select an authorized source. Decide whether you are showing a live traffic layer, licensed historical observations, or another permitted dataset. A sequence of live-map images documents what appeared on screen at those times; it is not automatically a historical traffic record.
- Define a reproducible view. Fix the browser viewport, map center, zoom, traffic layer, language, timezone, and any account state. Keep these values unchanged between captures.
- Capture at a schedule. Save individual frames when you need precise sampling, or record browser video when continuous activity is part of the deliverable.
- Verify each output. Reject blank pages, consent dialogs, failed loads, and frames with a changed location or layer.
- Close the browser context. Playwright records become available after the page or context closes.
- Assemble separately. Import the image sequence or browser video into an editor, choose the playback speed and frame rate, add titles and attribution, and export the final file.
This separation matters: browser automation captures rendered pixels. It does not turn a display into a validated traffic database or provide a license to copy, cache, bulk-download, or republish map content.
Choose screenshots or browser video

Use screenshots when every frame represents a known observation time. Use video when continuity is more important than selecting individual observations. You can also record a session for documentation while saving screenshots for the actual time-lapse.
Plan a stable traffic-map capture
Fix the visual state
- Use a fixed viewport such as 1280×720 or your intended output dimensions.
- Set the same center coordinates, zoom, map type, and traffic layer before every capture.
- Wait for the map and traffic overlay to finish rendering instead of capturing immediately after navigation.
- Use a consistent timezone when the map exposes time controls or labels.
- Keep attribution visible whenever the provider requires it.
Choose the sampling schedule
Write down the start time, end time, interval, target geography, and what counts as a valid frame. A five-minute interval over eight hours produces 96 intended observations; a failed or obstructed capture should be marked missing rather than silently treated as a traffic change. If you need traffic statistics, obtain an authorized historical feed with a stated geography, temporal resolution, and publication license instead of inferring them from screenshots.

Decide what the video claims
Describe the result as a visualization of captured map views unless the underlying provider authorizes a stronger claim. Do not label it “historical traffic data” merely because the frames were collected over time. Actual road conditions can differ from map results, so avoid presenting the animation as a precise measurement without independent validation.
Set up Playwright for scheduled screenshots
The example below is a practical starting point for a JavaScript project. Replace the URL and selectors with the map provider and controls that you are authorized to automate. The selectors shown are placeholders because map interfaces differ and undocumented interfaces should not be scraped.

})();For a long run, keeping one context open can preserve state, but a fresh navigation or context may be more reproducible. Record a timestamp and a validity status beside each frame so editing does not conceal missing observations. If the map requires a login, use an account and automation method permitted by its terms; never bypass a bot check or CAPTCHA.
Record browser video with Playwright
Enable recording when you want a continuous browser capture. Playwright makes the video available only after the page or browser context closes, so explicitly await closure before trying to copy or inspect the file.

})();A recording shows browser activity during the selected period. It does not create observations for times when the browser was closed, and it does not establish that the provider permits publication.
Turn captures into a time-lapse
- Sort frames by their capture timestamp, not by an arbitrary filename order.
- Remove invalid frames and document gaps; do not duplicate a frame to imply an observation that never occurred.
- Import the sequence into your editor and set a deliberate display duration or frame rate.
- Add a title containing the location, capture window, timezone, interval, and whether the imagery is live-display capture or licensed historical data.
- Keep required map attribution readable throughout the video. If a crop, zoom, or transition would hide it, change the layout rather than masking it.
- Export using the resolution and codec required by your destination, then watch the complete file to check for blank frames, jumps, unreadable labels, and audio or title timing.
These are production choices, not Playwright features. The Playwright documentation covers browser screenshots and recording, not a particular editor, codec, frame-rate design, or traffic-data accuracy.
Permission and attribution checks
If you use Google Maps content, its Additional Terms state that users may “publicly display content with proper attribution online, in video, and in print.” That permission is conditioned on the applicable terms and does not override restrictions elsewhere in those terms. The same terms prohibit mass downloading and bulk feeds.
The Google Map Tiles API policy is product-specific. It requires attribution and limits pre-fetching, indexing, storage, caching, offline use, and extraction except as allowed by the governing customer agreement. Do not assume that a policy for the Map Tiles API governs every Google Maps product, and do not treat an archived Maps APIs terms page as current legal guidance.

Troubleshooting
The frame is blank or only partly rendered
Increase the readiness wait, wait for a documented selector, and capture after the traffic layer has rendered. Check the saved image before accepting it. A blank result is a failed capture, not evidence of clear roads.

The map changes position between frames
Set the viewport and initial location explicitly. Check responsive breakpoints, geolocation permissions, persisted local storage, and account-specific defaults. Log the effective URL and visible map state for each frame.
The video file is missing
Close the page or context and await that promise before reading the video path. Playwright finalizes recorded video on context closure.
A consent dialog, popup, or chat widget covers the map
Use the provider’s permitted controls or an authorized test configuration. Do not conceal required attribution or automate around a restriction. For ordinary website screenshots, ScreenshotNeo can remove supported consent platforms, popups, and chat widgets before capture.
Captures fail intermittently
Use explicit navigation and selector timeouts, retry only transient failures, and store a status for every scheduled attempt. Keep failed frames out of the final sequence and investigate rate limits or provider restrictions instead of increasing request volume blindly.

The published video receives a rights complaint
Pause distribution, review the current product-specific terms, and confirm your attribution and permission. A screen recording is not blanket permission for mass collection, caching, or commercial republication.
FAQ
Can a traffic time-lapse prove congestion levels?
No. It shows rendered map content at selected times. Quantitative congestion claims require an authorized data source and a defined measurement method.
Should I use a live map or historical data?
Use a live map for a visual record of what viewers saw. Use licensed historical observations when the project needs analysis, repeatability across past dates, or numerical comparisons.
Does closing Playwright end the recording?
For manually managed recordings, closing the browser context is the step that makes the video available for access.
Can I remove map attribution in post-production?
Do not remove required attribution. Keep it visible and verify the current terms for the specific map product.
