Use Playwright to open each URL, wait for the page content you need, capture a screenshot, and save a result tied to that URL. For a reliable batch, also record navigation status and errors: HTTP 404 and 500 responses do not necessarily throw an exception, so a screenshot alone does not prove the page succeeded.
What the workflow does
A thumbnail batch is a loop around Playwright’s navigation and screenshot APIs. For every input URL, the script navigates to the page, waits for an appropriate readiness signal, captures either the visible viewport, the full document, or a specific element, and writes an image. A manifest makes each output traceable and lets you identify pages to review or retry.
The example below uses Node.js with Playwright’s Chromium browser. It reads one URL per line from urls.txt, limits concurrent pages, saves viewport screenshots as PNG, and writes a JSON Lines manifest. The worker limit is configurable rather than a universal recommendation: choose it by measuring your URLs and available memory.

- Install Playwright in a project:
npm init -y, thennpm install playwright. - Install the browser binary:
npx playwright install chromium. - Create
urls.txtwith one complete URL per line. Blank lines and lines beginning with#are ignored. - Save the script below as
thumbnails.mjs.
Use stable names based on the list position rather than turning raw URLs into filesystem paths. This avoids invalid characters and collisions when different URLs normalize to similar names.

Run a bounded batch and keep an auditable manifest

}Run it with node thumbnails.mjs urls.txt thumbnails. Set a lower or higher bounded worker count with, for example, WORKERS=2 node thumbnails.mjs. Each successful record points to a PNG; HTTP error pages are recorded but not captured by this policy. Change that branch if diagnostic screenshots of error pages are useful to you.
Use a readiness condition that matches the page
The script uses domcontentloaded as a quick navigation milestone, not proof that every image, font, or client-rendered section is ready. If the part you need appears asynchronously, wait for a visible selector or another condition specific to that page. For a heterogeneous URL list, make this configurable per URL or domain rather than waiting blindly on one selector that may not exist everywhere.

Playwright offers commit, domcontentloaded, load, and networkidle for the waitUntil option. The Playwright Page API describes networkidle as discouraged for general testing and says to use assertions to assess readiness instead: Playwright Page API. Pages may keep connections open or load content after network traffic settles, so network silence is not a reliable substitute for checking the content you intend to show.
Choose what the thumbnail represents
- Viewport: the script’s default. It captures the currently visible area, usually a sensible starting point for a compact preview.
- Full page: use
await page.screenshot({ path: outputPath, fullPage: true });when the whole scrollable document should be represented. Very long pages can produce large images. - Element: use
await page.locator('main').screenshot({ path: outputPath });to capture a specific component. Choose a selector that is stable on the target site.

Resize or crop to the destination’s thumbnail dimensions
A browser viewport setting controls the captured page area; it does not define a publisher’s final thumbnail dimensions or crop policy. First capture the page at a useful viewport, then resize or crop the saved image (or screenshot buffer) with your image-processing library to match the destination. Decide whether to preserve the full frame with padding or crop to fill: cropping can remove page content near the edges, while preserving the frame can leave empty space.
The right dimensions, output format, and compression quality depend on where the thumbnail will be displayed; the Playwright screenshot API does not determine those destination requirements. PNG is lossless but may be larger. If your publishing pipeline accepts another image format, choose and encode it as a separate processing step.

Handle HTTP errors, timeouts, and retries deliberately
page.goto() can return a response with an HTTP error status such as 404 or 500 without throwing. The example checks the response and marks status codes of 400 or higher as http-error; decide whether your use case should instead save those pages for diagnosis. Navigation failures such as timeouts or unreachable sites are caught and logged as failed. See the Page API for navigation response and failure behavior.

The JSON Lines manifest records the input URL, final URL after redirects, status when available, output path, result, and error message. It gives you a practical review and retry list. For production use, add a retry policy only for failures you expect to be transient, cap the number of attempts, and record each attempt so a persistent failure is not obscured.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
- Bound concurrency: more open pages can raise throughput but also consume memory, CPU, and network capacity. The documentation does not prescribe a worker count or publish a throughput guarantee for hundreds of arbitrary sites. Measure a representative subset on the machine that will run the batch.
- Reuse the browser: the sample launches Chromium once and closes each page after its capture. This avoids launching a new browser process for every URL while keeping pages bounded.
- Consider isolation: each new page has its own page state, but sites may still need cookies or a context shared across pages. Use browser contexts intentionally if authentication or session behavior matters.
- Expect uneven runtimes: site response time, scripts, redirects, and content readiness vary. A timeout should be chosen for your workload and logged, not treated as proof that the site is permanently unavailable.
- Plan storage: capture size depends on viewport, full-page length, and format. Check disk use and clean up or move outputs after validating the manifest.
- Measure before scaling: benchmark a representative mix of fast, slow, redirected, and failing URLs. There is no universal URLs-per-minute figure for this workload.

No. Screenshot capture defines the captured page area; resize or crop the result separately to your destination’s required dimensions.
