Make a preview image from a public webpage
- Open Screenshot.rocks’ website screenshot tool and enter the page’s public URL. The site says you can omit
https://. - Choose desktop for a typical computer layout or mobile if you want the image to show a phone layout, then capture the page. The online tool renders the first screen as a first-time visitor.
- In the editor, choose a device frame and background. Set the canvas size for the destination before exporting; the exported image uses the canvas dimensions.
- Choose an output format, export, and inspect the image at its intended destination. A destination may crop or letterbox an image whose aspect ratio does not match its layout.

Choose an export format
- PNG: A good choice for crisp text, interface details, and sharp edges.
- JPEG: Useful for photo-heavy images or when a smaller file is important.
- WebP: Useful for website or documentation use when you want a smaller image.
- SVG: The editor offers SVG, but it contains the finished image; enlarging it does not make the screenshot sharper.
When online capture is not the right route
Logged-in or private pages
The online tool cannot see behind a login. For a logged-in page, Screenshot.rocks’ browser extension captures the visible part of the current tab. Its official extension page says the Chrome and Edge extensions request the activeTab permission. The capture is sent to the editor, which Screenshot.rocks says does not store it.
Full-page captures
The online URL tool captures only the first screen. To capture a whole scrolling page, use browser-native full-page capture; Screenshot.rocks documents methods for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari. Its guide says an iPhone full-page capture is saved as a PDF. The extension captures the visible portion of the tab rather than substituting for a full-page capture.

Local, staging, or automation-blocked sites
The online service cannot reach a local address such as localhost, access a login-gated page, or render a site that blocks automated browsers. Use the current-tab extension for a page already open in your browser, or a browser-native capture for the page you can view. Screenshot.rocks’ online tool is intended for public pages it can load.
Understand what happens to your image and page data
The privacy path depends on how you make the image. Screenshot.rocks says images you drop, paste, or choose in its editor are processed in your browser and are not uploaded or stored. URL capture sends the address for rendering; extension capture sends the captured tab to the editor. Screenshot.rocks says those captures are not stored. Its homepage states: “Images are processed in your browser and never stored on our servers.” That statement describes its service, but does not mean URL and extension capture stay entirely on your device.

Troubleshooting
- The image is only the top of the webpage: That is the online tool’s first-screen capture. Use browser-native full-page capture when you need the scrolling content.
- The page does not load: Confirm the URL is publicly reachable and does not require a login. Local addresses and sites that block automated browsers cannot be captured by the online tool.
- The preview crops the image: Check that the canvas aspect ratio matches the destination. For a link preview, Screenshot.rocks recommends 1200 × 630 px; consult the platform’s own current help for its display behavior.
- The export has unexpected dimensions: Set the canvas dimensions in the editor before exporting; output follows the canvas size.
- Text looks soft after resizing: Avoid enlarging the exported screenshot. The SVG option contains a finished image and does not add detail when scaled up; capture or export at dimensions suitable for the final use.
- You cannot capture a signed-in view: Open the page in your browser and use the extension to capture the visible tab, or use a browser-native method available in that browser.
