To slow an entire clip in Premiere Pro, select it in the Timeline, open Clip > Speed/Duration (or right-click the clip and choose Speed/Duration), and set Speed to less than 100%. To slow only part of a clip or create a speed ramp, use Time Remapping > Speed and adjust keyframes. Adobe recommends high-frame-rate footage for the best slow-motion results, but the right settings depend on your shot and sequence.
Slow down an entire clip with Speed/Duration
- Import your footage and add it to a sequence.
- Select the clip in the Timeline.
- Choose Clip > Speed/Duration, or right-click the clip and choose Speed/Duration.
- Enter a value below 100% in Speed. For example, 50% plays at half speed; Adobe uses this as an example, not a setting that suits every shot.
- If needed, choose a Time Interpolation method, then click OK.
- Review the result in the Program Monitor and make room for the clip’s increased duration. Slowing a clip extends it, which can affect edits that follow.
In the Speed/Duration dialog, Ripple Edit shifts later clips to accommodate the duration change. Turn it on if you want following edits to move with the slowed clip; leave it off if you need to preserve their timeline positions. Maintain Audio Pitch can help keep the clip’s audio from sounding lower when playback slows. For Adobe’s current workflow, see Change clip speed and duration in Premiere Pro.
Slow down part of a clip or create a speed ramp
Use Time Remapping when one section should play more slowly than the rest, or when you want to transition gradually between normal and slow motion.
- In the Timeline, open the clip’s keyframe display and choose Time Remapping > Speed.
- Add keyframes to mark where the speed change should begin and end.
- Adjust the speed band between the keyframes to set the playback speed for that section.
- Use the available transition handles to create a gradual speed ramp instead of an abrupt change.
- Review the full clip and allow for its changed duration. If playback previews poorly, try proxies or a lower-resolution preview; remapped footage, especially with large speed changes, can take more processing power to preview smoothly.
Adobe’s Time Remapping tutorial demonstrates this workflow. It also shows Optical Flow; its results should be checked on the actual footage rather than assumed to be artifact-free.
#1 Best Overall
- BUILT FOR PREMIERE PRO: 150+ Premiere Pro shortcuts are printed on the keys and color-coded by function, so cut, trim, timeline and playback commands are visible at a glance. Edit faster without memorizing hotkeys.

Choose a time interpolation method
Interpolation determines how Premiere Pro handles the frames needed to play a clip at its adjusted speed. Select a method in Speed/Duration, then judge it by reviewing the rendered result.

Adobe labels Optical Flow the highest-quality option for slow motion in its Speed/Duration guidance and describes it as generating frames by analyzing motion between frames. That is product guidance, not a guarantee: generated frames can produce visible artifacts, so compare methods on the shot you are editing. See Adobe’s time interpolation help.

Get smoother results from your footage
Adobe’s tutorial says, “For best results, your footage should be shot at a high frame rate.” Higher-frame-rate footage gives you more captured frames to work with when slowing motion. The reviewed guidance does not establish a universal minimum recording frame rate or a speed percentage that guarantees smooth playback. Results vary with the source footage, sequence settings, and interpolation method. See Adobe’s slow down footage tutorial.

You can slow existing footage with Speed/Duration or Time Remapping; a high-frame-rate camera is not a prerequisite for using either workflow. If a strong slow-down looks choppy, try another interpolation method and render it to inspect the result. Optical Flow may improve some shots, but it cannot guarantee clean motion for every kind of footage.
