For a symbol you insert often, the easiest custom shortcut in desktop Word is an AutoCorrect entry: type a distinctive trigger and Word replaces it with the symbol. If you know the symbol’s Unicode hexadecimal code, you can also type that code and press Alt+X. Word has direct shortcuts for some common characters, while Insert > Symbol > More Symbols helps you find a character and its code.

Choose the right way to insert the symbol

Method Best for What to know
AutoCorrect A symbol you use repeatedly and want to insert with a memorable trigger. Create or edit entries in desktop Word. Word for the web supports AutoCorrect but does not provide controls to add or remove entries; the list is shared with other supported Office apps. Microsoft’s AutoCorrect instructions.
Unicode code + Alt+X You know, or can look up, the symbol’s hexadecimal Unicode value. Type the hexadecimal code at the insertion point, then press Alt+X. No numeric keypad is needed. Microsoft’s character-code instructions.
Decimal Alt code You have the decimal code and a numeric keypad. Hold Alt and type the code on the numeric keypad; Num Lock may need to be on. This is a different method from Unicode hex + Alt+X. Microsoft’s character-code instructions.
Built-in Word shortcut A common special character that already has a published shortcut. Shortcuts are character-specific; not every symbol has one. Microsoft’s Word shortcut list.
Insert > Symbol Finding a character, inserting it once, or checking its code. Browse by font or subset and inspect the Character code and From fields. Microsoft’s symbol instructions.

Find a symbol and its code in Word

  1. Place the cursor where the symbol should appear.
  2. Open Insert > Symbol > More Symbols.
  3. Choose a font or subset and locate the character. If it is missing, try another font; symbols available depend on the font, and Microsoft identifies Segoe UI Symbol as a font with a large Unicode symbol collection.
  4. Select the character and check Character code and From. If From says Unicode (hex), the displayed code is hexadecimal and can be entered with Alt+X.

Microsoft’s symbol and character-code instructions cover Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016. Menus and support may differ in other Word editions or platforms.

Create a custom symbol shortcut with AutoCorrect

AutoCorrect is the best choice when you want a short personal trigger rather than remembering a code. Use a distinctive string that will not appear in ordinary typing; there is no universal trigger because a replacement can conflict with text you regularly enter.

  1. In desktop Word, open the AutoCorrect settings and select the AutoCorrect tab. The precise route to settings can vary by platform and version.
  2. In the Replace field, type your unique trigger.
  3. In the With field, enter the symbol itself. You can copy it from the document or insert it through the symbol dialog.
  4. Select Add on Windows, or use the add control and confirm on Mac.
  5. Test the trigger in a document. If Word replaces ordinary text unexpectedly, choose a more distinctive trigger or remove the entry from desktop Word’s AutoCorrect list.

Multiple replacement entries can point to the same output, and the AutoCorrect list is shared with other Office applications that support AutoCorrect. For Word on the web, use an existing entry or set it up in desktop Word; web Word does not let you add or remove entries.

Type a Unicode hexadecimal code with Alt+X

At the insertion point, type the symbol’s hexadecimal Unicode value and press Alt+X. For example, type 20AC and press Alt+X to get €; type 221A and press Alt+X to get √.

If the code touches preceding text, select only the code before pressing Alt+X so Word does not treat adjacent characters as part of it. If conversion produces the wrong glyph or no visible symbol, check the font. Microsoft’s broader code guidance also describes a U+ prefix for disambiguating some sequences; selecting just the intended code is the straightforward approach for this workflow.

Use a decimal Alt code with a numeric keypad

Decimal Alt codes are not Unicode hexadecimal codes. To enter a decimal code, hold Alt and type the digits on the numeric keypad, not the number row above the letters. Num Lock may need to be on. Microsoft advises entering ASCII codes as four digits, adding leading zeroes when needed. For example, Microsoft lists Alt+0128 for €.

If your laptop has no separate numeric keypad, this route may be awkward or unavailable. Use Unicode hex with Alt+X or find and insert the character through Insert > Symbol > More Symbols instead.

Check Word’s built-in shortcuts first

Some frequently used characters already have direct shortcuts. Microsoft lists these examples:

  • Ctrl+Alt+R inserts ®.
  • Ctrl+Alt+T inserts ™.
  • Ctrl+Alt+Period inserts an ellipsis (…).

Check the full Word keyboard shortcut list for your character; do not assume every symbol has a built-in shortcut.

For accented letters, consider accent shortcuts or a language keyboard

If your repeated characters are accented letters, Word documents dedicated keystroke sequences for common accents. For sustained writing in another language, Microsoft recommends considering a keyboard layout for that language. The accent-shortcut article covers Microsoft 365, Word 2024, and Word 2021: Keyboard shortcuts to add language accent marks in Word and Outlook.
