Start with the information viewers need, design it for your stream’s canvas, and preview it in the actual scene before going live. For a conventional widescreen broadcast, OBS recommends a 16:9 canvas such as 1920×1080 or 1280×720; matching the design to that canvas helps avoid distortion and keeps overlays in the right place.
Plan what the graphics should do
A live-stream graphic works best when it helps viewers understand or follow the broadcast. Decide its job before choosing colors, animation, or a template.
- Identify the speaker or channel.
- Show a current topic, score, or other useful status.
- Display a sponsor mark where appropriate.
- Use a starting-soon or break screen when the stream is not showing its main content.
Keep decorative frames and motion from competing with the main action. A graphic can be polished without occupying much screen space.
Choose the canvas before designing
Set the design to the dimensions of the stream’s output canvas or target scene. For conventional widescreen production, OBS Project recommends 16:9, including 1920×1080 or 1280×720. Its Aspect Ratio Guide cautions that stretching content to fit can warp or distort it. If your design and scene have different proportions, adjust the design or its placement rather than assuming a stretch will look right.

Platform safe areas and display behavior can vary by destination and device. Check the chosen platform’s current creator guidance when placing text or important details near screen edges.
Choose how to add the graphics in OBS
For a static layout, add individual image and text sources to a scene. For a graphic built as a webpage or one that needs dynamic content, use Browser Source. OBS describes Browser Source as a way to load a local file or URL with configurable viewport dimensions and frame rate.

| Approach | Best suited to | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| OBS image and text sources | Static cards, logos, labels, and straightforward scene graphics. | Each element is placed and managed as a source. OBS’s quick-start guide demonstrates layering a background, text overlay, and game capture in a scene. |
| OBS Browser Source | A webpage-based, dynamic, or single browser-rendered layout. | It can load a local file or URL and has configurable dimensions and frame rate. Check that the page renders correctly at the chosen viewport size. |
| Design service plus OBS | Creators who want a visual editor or a template-based starting point. | Canva documents making overlay graphics for broadcast software. Its recommendations and available export options can change, so verify current features in the service. |
For further guidance, see the OBS documentation for Browser Source and its scene setup, as well as Canva’s Twitch overlay guide.
Create and place the overlay
- Set up the scene dimensions. Confirm your output canvas or target scene size in OBS before creating or positioning assets. Use a matching design ratio; do not stretch a mismatched image without checking for distortion.
- Make or select the asset. Create a card, logo, or text element, or build a page-based graphic if it needs dynamic content. A design service such as Canva is an optional way to make and export an overlay, not a requirement.
- Import it into OBS. Add static assets as image or text sources. For a webpage, add a Browser Source, enter a local file or URL, and set the viewport dimensions to suit the intended canvas.
- Arrange the layers. Place the graphic sources above the video sources they annotate. OBS’s scene tutorial illustrates a background, text overlay, and game capture layered together.
- Preserve transparency where needed. For an overlay that should reveal the video underneath, export a format that supports transparency. Elgato’s guide uses PNG for static transparent overlays and WEBM for animated ones. Confirm that your broadcast software supports the chosen file and test it before relying on it live.

Make graphics readable without crowding the stream
- Keep labels and decorative frames away from important action or content.
- Use strong contrast between text and its background so viewers can read it at a glance.
- Consider how the layout will look when the player or browser changes size. Twitch’s extension-design guidance advises designing for resizing.
- Use animation only when it supports the information or transition; make sure it does not distract from the main content.
These are practical design considerations, not a guarantee that adding graphics will increase viewership. See Twitch’s extension design guidance for its resizing advice.
Preview the complete scene before going live
Check the graphic in the actual OBS scene, not only in the design editor. Confirm that it is positioned correctly, retains its proportions, is not unexpectedly cropped or opaque, and does not cover important content. Preview each scene where it appears and check how any animation behaves before you start the broadcast.
