What’s actually slowing this PC down?

HTML and CSS can create a page that looks dynamic through responsive layouts, hover effects, transitions, and animations. To make the page respond to clicks, validate input, or change content based on data, add JavaScript. Here’s a small working example and a practical path from files on your computer to a published page.
What “dynamic” means on a web page
“Dynamic” can describe visual motion or behavior that changes in response to a user or data. The distinction matters: CSS can animate appearance, but it does not replace JavaScript for event-driven logic such as responding to a button press or updating page content.
- HTML gives the page its structure and content: headings, paragraphs, lists, forms, and buttons.
- CSS controls presentation and layout, including responsive styling, visual states, transitions, and keyframe animations.
- JavaScript handles behavior: it can listen for events, check input, update content, and apply CSS classes that represent a new state.
The browser turns HTML into a document structure, applies CSS, and runs JavaScript. Scripts can modify the document, which can change what the browser renders.
Build a small interactive page
This example lets a visitor add a task, mark it complete, or remove it. HTML supplies the form and list, CSS styles the layout and completed state, and JavaScript handles the actions. Save the following three files in one folder and open index.html in a browser.

1. Create index.html
<!doctype html>
<html lang="en">
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
<title>My task list</title>
<link rel="stylesheet" href="styles.css">
<script src="script.js" defer></script>
</head>
<body>
<main class="panel">
<h1>My task list</h1>
<p>Add a task, then select it when it’s done.</p>
<form id="task-form">
<label for="task-input">New task</label>
<div class="form-row">
<input id="task-input" name="task" required maxlength="120">
<button type="submit">Add task</button>
</div>
</form>
<ul id="task-list" aria-label="Tasks"></ul>
<p id="empty-message">No tasks yet.</p>
</main>
</body>
</html>
The defer attribute tells the browser to run the script after it has parsed the document, so the elements are available when the code attaches event listeners.
2. Add presentation in styles.css
* {
box-sizing: border-box;
}
body {
margin: 0;
padding: 2rem 1rem;
background: #f3f5f8;
color: #202633;
font: 1rem/1.5 system-ui, sans-serif;
}
.panel {
max-width: 36rem;
margin: 0 auto;
padding: 1.5rem;
background: white;
border-radius: 0.75rem;
box-shadow: 0 0.5rem 1.5rem rgb(20 35 55 / 10%);
}
.form-row {
display: flex;
gap: 0.5rem;
}
input, button {
min-height: 2.75rem;
font: inherit;
}
input {
flex: 1;
min-width: 0;
padding: 0.5rem;
border: 1px solid #8793a3;
border-radius: 0.35rem;
}
button {
padding: 0.5rem 0.85rem;
border: 0;
border-radius: 0.35rem;
background: #174ea6;
color: white;
cursor: pointer;
}
button:hover, button:focus-visible {
background: #103b80;
}
button:focus-visible, input:focus-visible {
outline: 3px solid #f0b429;
outline-offset: 2px;
}
#task-list {
padding: 0;
list-style: none;
}
.task {
display: flex;
align-items: center;
gap: 0.6rem;
padding: 0.65rem 0;
border-bottom: 1px solid #e1e5eb;
}
.task label {
flex: 1;
overflow-wrap: anywhere;
}
.task.is-complete label {
color: #657080;
text-decoration: line-through;
}
.remove-button {
background: #5b6470;
}
@media (max-width: 28rem) {
.form-row {
align-items: stretch;
flex-direction: column;
}
}
@media (prefers-reduced-motion: no-preference) {
.task {
transition: color 160ms ease, background-color 160ms ease;
}
}
The media query adapts the form for narrow screens. The transition is limited to visual properties, and it is only enabled when the visitor has not requested reduced motion.

3. Add behavior in script.js
const form = document.querySelector("#task-form");
const input = document.querySelector("#task-input");
const list = document.querySelector("#task-list");
const emptyMessage = document.querySelector("#empty-message");
function updateEmptyMessage() {
emptyMessage.hidden = list.children.length > 0;
}
form.addEventListener("submit", (event) => {
event.preventDefault();
const taskName = input.value.trim();
if (!taskName) {
input.focus();
return;
}
const item = document.createElement("li");
item.className = "task";
const checkbox = document.createElement("input");
checkbox.type = "checkbox";
checkbox.addEventListener("change", () => {
item.classList.toggle("is-complete", checkbox.checked);
});
const label = document.createElement("label");
label.textContent = taskName;
const removeButton = document.createElement("button");
removeButton.type = "button";
removeButton.className = "remove-button";
removeButton.textContent = "Remove";
removeButton.setAttribute("aria-label", `Remove task: ${taskName}`);
removeButton.addEventListener("click", () => {
item.remove();
updateEmptyMessage();
});
item.append(checkbox, label, removeButton);
list.append(item);
input.value = "";
input.focus();
updateEmptyMessage();
});
updateEmptyMessage();
The form’s submit event is the behavior trigger. JavaScript reads the input, creates elements, and changes the page. It uses textContent for user-provided text rather than treating that text as HTML markup.
Choose CSS or JavaScript for the change
| What you want | Start with | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A hover or focus appearance, or a gradual style change | CSS transition | Transitions interpolate supported property changes between states. |
| A repeating or sequenced decorative effect | CSS keyframes and animation | CSS can describe a motion sequence without JavaScript for basic animation. |
| Respond to a click, validate input, or update content from data | JavaScript with HTML and CSS | JavaScript supplies event and data logic; CSS styles the resulting state. |
| Create or control animation timing and playback at runtime | Web Animations API | JavaScript can construct browser animations and control their playback. |
| Transition between views or page documents | View Transition API, if supported | It can animate single-page state changes and multi-page navigation, but browser support should be checked before relying on it. |
CSS animation has limits: not every property can be animated, and transitions involving values such as auto may not behave consistently across browsers. Use JavaScript when a state or computed result—not just a visual effect—determines what should happen.

Follow a beginner-friendly build and publish workflow
- Plan the page. Decide its purpose, audience, and content before choosing colors or effects.
- Write the HTML. Use meaningful elements for headings, content, forms, and controls.
- Style with CSS. Set typography, color, spacing, and responsive layout; test at narrow and wide viewport sizes.
- Pick one user task. Identify an action the visitor needs to complete, such as adding an item or submitting a form.
- Add JavaScript only for that behavior. Attach an event handler, validate or process the input, and update content or a CSS class.
- Add motion only where useful. Use transitions for state changes and keyframes for defined sequences. Use the Web Animations API when code needs to control playback or timing.
- Test and publish. Confirm the page works without animation, check keyboard interaction and reduced-motion behavior, then publish the finished files using a web host or static-site publishing service.
Make animation accessible and robust
- Do not make an essential instruction or status available only through motion.
- Respect
prefers-reduced-motionand provide a reduced-motion alternative where animation could be distracting or disorienting. - For motion that runs automatically and continues, consider whether visitors need a way to pause or disable it. Avoid flashing effects that may trigger problems for people with sensitivities.
- Check browser compatibility before depending on newer APIs such as View Transitions; support can vary and change over time.
- Make sure controls remain usable with a keyboard and that changes are understandable without relying on color alone.
