Dispatch a custom event with data
This example announces that an item was added to a cart. The element that receives the event also has the listener; both use the same case-sensitive event type.

);CustomEvent takes the event type as its first argument and an options object as its second. Its detail property carries application-defined data to listeners as event.detail; if you omit detail, its default value is null. The sample item ID is illustrative. See MDN’s CustomEvent() constructor documentation.
Choose the event type and target
Use one consistent event type
The event type is a string, and event names are case-sensitive. The type supplied to new CustomEvent() must match the type passed to addEventListener(), including capitalization and punctuation. Keeping event names in constants can reduce accidental mismatches; any particular naming style is a team preference, not a browser requirement.

Dispatch to the audience that needs the notification
An event is delivered through the target on which you call dispatchEvent(). Use a component element when its listeners should coordinate locally, or a shared DOM target when listeners in a broader part of the page need to receive it. For notifications belonging to a non-DOM object API, an object derived from EventTarget can use the same listener and dispatch methods. MDN documents the EventTarget interface.
Use Event when there is no payload
If listeners only need to know that something happened and there is no associated data, a plain Event can be enough:

target.dispatchEvent(new Event("build"));Choose CustomEvent when the listener needs a payload in detail; otherwise, Event expresses a payload-free notification. MDN’s DOM events guide covers creating and dispatching events.
Understand propagation and synthetic events
Custom events created and dispatched by code are synthetic events, not browser-generated evidence that a real user performed an action. Use them to notify application code about application state or coordination; do not treat dispatching one as proof of a click, purchase, or other genuine user action. The WHATWG DOM Standard defines the event model.

addEventListener() also accepts options such as capture. Set it when a listener needs to run during the capture phase; the default behavior is appropriate when that phase is not required. See MDN’s addEventListener() reference.
Browser availability
MDN labels the CustomEvent() constructor widely available and states that it has been available across browsers since July 2015. That is MDN’s broad compatibility statement; check current compatibility tables for the specific browsers and legacy environments your project supports. See the constructor reference.
