Use a CSS gradient as a background image to create a color transition, and use box-shadow or text-shadow to add depth to an element or its text. Choose a gradient function for the pattern you want, set its direction or shape and color stops, then tune shadow offsets, blur, spread, and color.
Choose the right CSS effect
| What you want | CSS choice | Main controls |
|---|---|---|
| A transition in a straight direction | linear-gradient() |
Direction or angle; color-stop positions |
| A transition from a center | radial-gradient() |
Shape, size, center, and color stops |
| A transition around a center | conic-gradient() |
Starting angle, center, and color stops |
| Repeated stripes or rings | A repeating gradient function | Stop positions and repetition interval |
| A shadow around an element | box-shadow |
Horizontal and vertical offsets, blur, spread, color, and optionally inset |
| A shadow on text glyphs | text-shadow |
Horizontal and vertical offsets, blur, and color |
Gradients are generated CSS images, so they can be used anywhere CSS accepts an image, including a background. They produce color transitions without requiring a separate raster image.
Create a gradient background
Linear gradients
linear-gradient() transitions along a straight line. It runs from top to bottom by default. Set a direction such as to right, or an angle such as 70deg, to change the direction. Add color stops to control which colors appear and where.
/* Left-to-right transition with three color stops. */
.banner {
background: linear-gradient(to right, #3157d5, #8b5cf6, #f4a261);
}
/* An angled transition. */
.banner-angled {
background: linear-gradient(70deg, #3157d5, #8b5cf6, #f4a261);
}
Two color stops are enough for a basic transition. Add more stops to introduce intermediate colors or create a more complex progression. You can assign positions to stops when you need to control where the transitions occur.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Radial and conic gradients
Use radial-gradient() for a transition that expands from a center, or conic-gradient() for colors that transition around one. Radial gradients can specify a shape and center; conic gradients can specify a starting angle and center.
/* A radial highlight anchored at the top-left. */
.card {
background: radial-gradient(circle at top left, #fff, #dbeafe);
}
/* A transition arranged around the center. */
.color-wheel {
background: conic-gradient(from 0deg, #3157d5, #8b5cf6, #f4a261, #3157d5);
}
The examples show the function choices and syntax; adjust the shape, position, angle, and stops for the design you need. The MDN gradient reference describes gradient types and repeating forms.

Repeating patterns and hard bands
Use a repeating gradient function when you want a repeated pattern, such as stripes or rings. Stop positions define the pattern’s bands and repetition interval. Closely placed or repeated color stops can make boundaries appear as hard bands rather than a gradual transition.
Add depth with box shadows
box-shadow adds a shadow around an element’s box. Its common values are horizontal offset, vertical offset, optional blur radius, optional spread radius, and color. Add inset to make the shadow fall inside the box. Separate multiple shadows with commas.

/* A soft outer shadow plus a separate inner highlight. */
.panel {
box-shadow: 0 8px 20px rgb(0 0 0 / 18%), inset 0 1px rgb(255 255 255 / 60%);
}
In the first layer, 0 is the horizontal offset, 8px the vertical offset, and 20px the blur radius; the color uses transparency. The second layer is inset and has its own offset and color. Change these values to tune direction, softness, spread, and contrast. See MDN’s box-shadow reference for the property’s value details.
Give text a shadow
text-shadow takes horizontal and vertical offsets, an optional blur, and a color. The offsets are required; blur is optional. Specify a color to make the appearance predictable rather than relying on the default.

Tune the result without guessing
- For a gradient, first choose the function that matches the transition’s geometry, then adjust direction or position and the color stops.
- For a box shadow, start with the direction set by the two offsets, then adjust blur for softness, spread for the shadow’s extent, and color for contrast.
- For a text shadow, keep the offsets and blur tied to the text’s size and use a deliberate color.
- When layering shadows, separate each complete shadow with a comma; each layer can have its own values.
Browser support and specifications
MDN marks text-shadow as Baseline Widely available. The references also describe gradients and box-shadow as established CSS features, but that is not a precise browser-version guarantee for every gradient subtype or syntax variation. Check the relevant live compatibility information if a specific browser or newer variation is a release requirement. The references associate gradients with CSS Images Module Level 4, box-shadow with CSS Backgrounds and Borders Module Level 3, and text-shadow with CSS Text Decoration Module Level 3; a specification reference alone does not establish uniform implementation of every feature.
