Add chapter markers to a YouTube livestream replay by editing the archived video’s description in YouTube Studio. Start at 00:00, list at least three timestamps in ascending order, and leave at least 10 seconds between chapter starts. For a 24/7 broadcast, first make sure you have a recording to edit: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.

Before you add chapters, confirm there is an archive

A chapter list can only navigate a video that exists. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not rely on YouTube’s archive as the only copy of a continuous 24/7 broadcast; keep a local recording or another backup. YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance explains the capture limitation and recommends recording a local backup.

If the broadcast has been divided into separate sessions, check each replay individually. Confirm the video is available in Studio, note its duration, and inspect the timeline before drafting timestamps.

Add manual chapter markers in YouTube Studio

  1. Open the replay. Sign in to YouTube Studio, select Content, then choose the archived livestream you want to edit.
  2. Review the recording. Scrub through the replay and record the actual start times of meaningful transitions. For a children’s stream, labels might identify a song, story, activity, or other segment viewers may want to revisit. These are editorial choices; YouTube does not prescribe a chapter interval or naming style.
  3. Edit the description. Add a plain-text timestamp and title for each chapter, one per line. For example, the following times are illustrative only; replace them with verified times from your own archive:

    00:00 Welcome and opening song
    12:34 Story time
    25:10 Movement activity
    38:02 Closing song

  4. Check the chapter rules. The first timestamp must be 00:00; include at least three timestamps; put them in ascending order; and ensure each chapter is at least 10 seconds long. A later chapter begins at its listed timestamp, so check the gap from each timestamp to the next.
  5. Save and test playback. Save the video details, open the replay, and check that the player displays the chapters and that each marker lands on the intended segment.

YouTube’s Video Chapters help page documents the timestamp requirements and explains that chapter markers let viewers navigate and rewatch sections. Manual markers replace automatic chapters when present.

Manual versus automatic chapters

Approach Control Effort Availability
Manual timestamps You choose boundaries and titles based on the actual replay. Requires reviewing the timeline and entering the timestamps. Follow the 00:00, three-timestamp, ascending-order, and 10-second rules; manual chapters override automatic ones.
Automatic chapters YouTube generates chapter divisions when available. Less manual timestamp entry, but you may still need to review the result. Generation is not guaranteed. Creators can allow automatic chapters when available or opt out.

You can manage the automatic-chapters setting in Studio when it is available for the video. YouTube’s chapter guidance describes the setting and notes that eligibility and generation are not guaranteed. For a replay where precise segment labels matter, review what appears in the player rather than assuming automatic chapters will be supplied.

Kids’ livestreams and Made for Kids settings

Set the audience accurately for the livestream and update the archived video’s audience if needed. Do not change an audience designation to obtain a feature. YouTube’s guidance on Made for Kids content lists features that are restricted, but chapters are not among those listed. The guidance does not expressly guarantee that chapter controls or chapter display will be available on every Made for Kids livestream archive, so check the specific replay in Studio and in the player.

Description limits and correction notes

If you add a correction section, place it after the video chapters. See YouTube’s description and correction guidance for the character limit and placement advice.

Why a 24-hour livestream replay may be missing

  • The broadcast ran longer than 12 hours. YouTube says a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A missing archive may not be recoverable from Studio; use a local recording or backup as the source for any replay you need to publish.
  • You are checking the wrong item or session. In Studio, open Content and verify the duration and identity of the archived video before editing. A 24/7 channel may have separate sessions rather than one usable, continuous replay.
  • The chapter list does not appear. Check that the first line is 00:00, there are at least three timestamp entries, each is later than the previous one, and adjacent chapter starts are at least 10 seconds apart. Save the description and inspect the replay again.
  • A marker lands in the wrong place. Recheck the timestamp against the archived timeline; do not copy planned program times if the actual stream started late, paused, or changed segments.
  • Automatic chapters are absent or unsuitable. Their generation is not guaranteed. Add manual timestamps for the divisions you want, or adjust the automatic-chapters setting if available.
