To create and update a writable Angular signal, initialize it with signal(initialValue), read its current value by calling it, and change it with .set() or .update(). This example displays a user’s status and lets a button set or toggle it.
Create a writable signal in a component
Import signal from @angular/core, then initialize it as a component property. The initial value determines the signal’s starting state; the type annotation below limits the status to two valid values.

Read the current value by calling the signal
A signal is read like a function: use userStatus() wherever you need its current value, including in a template expression such as {{ userStatus() }}. Writing userStatus without parentheses refers to the signal itself, not the status value.

You can also bind the value to a class, as in Angular’s tutorial example: [class]="userStatus()". Angular tracks signal reads in templates. When a signal read by an OnPush component template changes, Angular marks that component for an update during change detection; this is the rendering mechanism described in the signals guide.
Choose between .set() and .update()
Both methods change the value of a writable signal. Choose based on whether you already know the replacement value or need to derive it from the current value.

In the component, the “Go online” button calls goOnline(), which uses .set() to supply a known value. “Toggle” calls toggleStatus(), which uses .update() to choose the opposite status.
Connect component methods to template controls
Angular event bindings connect a template event to a component method. In the example, (click)="goOnline()" and (click)="toggleStatus()" call the respective methods when their buttons are clicked. Each method writes to the same signal, and the template’s call to userStatus() is the tracked read that displays its value.

Keep writable and computed signals distinct
The example uses a writable signal because the component changes its value. A computed() signal is for derived state and is read-only: read it by calling it, but do not try to change it with .set() or .update(). See Angular’s signals essentials guide for the distinction.
