You can start without a webcam if you use supported phone tracking, and you do not need to buy every optional feature before testing your setup. The essential checks are model compatibility, tracking, audio, platform eligibility, and the usage rights for your avatar and software.
1. Choose an avatar format and get a model
Decide whether you want a 2D model, a 3D model, or another avatar style before choosing tracking software. The workflow below uses VTube Studio, which supports Live2D Cubism models. Its Steam listing says it does not support VRoid files, so a VRoid avatar is not a compatible model for this particular app.
You can create or commission a Live2D Cubism model. If you commission artwork or rigging, agree with the artist on the permitted uses before paying: confirm whether streaming, monetization, editing, and promotional clips are covered. Permission to use tracking software does not give you rights to character art, music, or other assets.
The reviewed sources do not establish a standard commission price or a universal license. Compare artists’ work, deliverables, revision terms, and usage rights rather than assuming all commissions grant the same permissions.

2. Choose tracking software and an input
Use software that supports your model
For a Live2D Cubism model, VTube Studio is one documented option. Its Steam listing describes compatibility with OBS, Streamlabs, and other streaming software, as well as webcam tracking on Windows and Mac. Follow the app’s model-import and setup prompts, then check that the model responds before building your broadcast scene.
VTube Studio also offers audio-based mouth movement, which requires a microphone. That is separate from face tracking: a microphone for audio-based lip sync is not a universal requirement for every tracking method.
Choose webcam or phone tracking
A webcam is optional. VTube Studio documents phone tracking as well as webcam tracking, so you can choose based on the equipment you already have and the workflow you prefer. A webcam can be a straightforward choice if you want tracking on the computer; phone tracking can use a compatible iOS or Android device.

For phone-to-computer tracking, VTube Studio’s FAQ recommends Streaming Mode. It also advises turning off the model and camera preview and lowering the phone’s screen brightness to reduce device load and heat. Good, non-colored lighting can help tracking; avoid lighting that casts a strong color onto your face.
3. Build a scene in OBS or other streaming software
Once the avatar is tracking, add its output to your streaming software and arrange the rest of the broadcast around it. VTube Studio lists OBS and Streamlabs among compatible options. The scene can include the game or other content, microphone and desktop audio, and any overlays you need.
- Start the tracking app. Load the model and confirm that it follows your movement or the selected tracking input.
- Create a scene in your streaming software. Add the avatar output, then add the content you intend to show and the audio sources you need.
- Check layout and controls. Make sure the avatar is visible where you intend it to appear, overlays do not cover important content, and private menus or controls are not exposed in the scene.
- Check audio and scene changes. Confirm that the microphone and other intended audio sources are present, and that switching scenes does not accidentally hide the avatar or leave an unwanted source on screen.
The exact source names and capture steps depend on your operating system, app versions, and chosen tracking method; use the current instructions for those apps rather than assuming every setup uses the same capture source.

4. Connect to a platform and test before going public
Connect your streaming software to the platform you plan to use, configure the broadcast in its current control room, and do a private or otherwise non-public check where the platform allows it. Check framing, tracking response, microphone level, other audio, overlays, and scene switching before a public stream. YouTube’s current help guidance covers encoder streaming and horizontal and vertical live options; check the Live Control Room for the options available to your channel.
YouTube eligibility and formats
YouTube’s guidance accessed in 2026 says a channel must be verified, have no livestream restriction in the previous 90 days, and be operated by someone aged 16 or older to livestream. Live content must also comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms. These are eligibility conditions, not a guarantee that every stream or feature will be available to every account.
YouTube can create horizontal and vertical live formats together in Live Control Room. Its guidance says the vertical version is a center crop by default, viewers share the same chat, and you cannot add the vertical stream after the broadcast has started. Check the crop before going live so the avatar and any important on-screen content remain visible.

Twitch eligibility and monetization
Twitch announced revised Affiliate milestones for early June 2026: 4 streaming hours, 4 different streaming days, at least 3 average concurrent viewers on 4 different days, and 25 followers. These are program qualification criteria, not earnings estimates. Twitch distinguishes access to monetization tools from eligibility for payout; its announcement says streamers need Affiliate or Partner status to receive a payout. The rollout was initially described as starting in the United States and expanding globally later in 2026, so check your Creator Dashboard for current availability.
5. Check software and avatar licenses before monetizing
Licensing needs attention before you enable monetization. VTube Studio’s FAQ says individual streamers may use the app commercially without paid PRO or DLC, including for monetized YouTube or Twitch streams, while its current Steam EULA says personal commercial use—including superchats and monetized streams—requires at least one paid iOS or Android version or paid DLC. Because those statements conflict, check the current EULA and ask DenchiSoft for clarification if the answer affects your use. The EULA also describes additional company and agency licensing conditions; those terms are not legal advice.
Live2D’s 2019 help article gives separate Cubism Editor guidance based on business scale, but it is older than current agreements and should not be treated as overriding them. Check the current Live2D terms alongside the tracking app’s terms, your artist’s license, and the rights for music and other assets you use.

6. Start with the setup you actually need
- Model: Match the avatar format to the tracking app. VTube Studio supports Live2D Cubism and does not support VRoid files.
- Tracking: Choose a supported phone or webcam workflow; a webcam is not mandatory for VTube Studio tracking.
- Audio: Plan for a microphone if you want VTube Studio’s audio-based lip sync, and check all audio sources in your streaming scene.
- Budget: VTube Studio lists its Steam app as free, with optional watermark-removal DLC for webcam tracking; its mobile apps have free and PRO feature tiers. Check current feature and licensing details before use. No current hardware prices or universal computer specification are established here, so begin with equipment you already have and add hardware only for a specific need.
- Platform: Compare current eligibility, content rules, stream formats, and monetization terms. Requirements can change; confirm them when setting up your account.
7. Troubleshoot common setup problems
The model does not appear or track
- Check that the model format is supported by the app. VTube Studio supports Live2D Cubism, not VRoid files.
- Confirm the model has been imported and selected in the tracking app, then check that the chosen camera or phone input is available.
- If tracking is erratic, improve the lighting and avoid strongly colored illumination; VTube Studio’s FAQ recommends good, non-colored lighting.
- If using phone tracking, enable Streaming Mode and try turning off the model and camera preview and lowering screen brightness to reduce device load and heat.
The avatar is missing from the broadcast scene
- Confirm the tracking app is open and the model is visible there.
- Check that the avatar output or capture source is present and visible in the selected OBS, Streamlabs, or other streaming-software scene.
- Review source order and scene changes in a non-public test so another source is not covering the avatar.
The mouth does not move with speech
- If you expect audio-based lip sync, confirm that a microphone is connected and that the tracking app can use it.
- Check that the intended microphone is also selected in the streaming software; tracking input and broadcast audio are separate parts of the setup.
You cannot start a YouTube livestream
- Check that the channel is verified, has no livestream restriction in the previous 90 days, and meets YouTube’s minimum age requirement of 16.
- Review the current Live Control Room status and the platform’s content rules before trying again.
