Create a file with a .py extension, put Python code in it, save it, then run it from your system terminal with the Python interpreter. For example, try python hello.py or python3 hello.py; which command works depends on your installation and operating system.
Create and run a Python file

Open a terminal and change to the folder where you want the file to be saved. The command to change folders varies by shell; use the command appropriate for your terminal.

Create or open a file named
hello.pyin a text editor. You can use an editor you already have, or an editor with an integrated terminal such as Visual Studio Code. File-creation steps depend on your shell and editor, so there is no single creation command that applies to every system. -
Enter this line in the file, then save it:
print("Hello, world!") -
At the system terminal prompt, run the saved file using the Python command available on your computer:

python hello.pyIf that command is not recognized, try
python3 hello.py. Python runs a script when you invoke the interpreter with the filename; its command-line documentation givespython myscript.pyas a common example (Python command-line documentation).
You should see Hello, world! printed in the terminal. The file is ordinary source code; the .py extension makes its purpose clear, and the interpreter executes the contents when you provide the file path (Python interpreter tutorial).

Choose a workflow that fits your setup
Use a text editor and your terminal
This approach works with many editors: create or open the file, write the code, save it, and run the command from the terminal. The exact file-creation steps depend on the editor, shell, and operating system. If you already have an editor and want to run scripts directly, this is a straightforward option.
Use Visual Studio Code’s integrated terminal
VS Code documents a workflow for running a saved Python file in its integrated terminal. Its examples use python3 hello.py on macOS and Linux, and python hello.py on Windows. Follow the editor’s documented Python setup, including its Python extension requirements, if you choose this route (Running Python code in Visual Studio Code).

Use the terminal prompt, not Python’s interactive prompt
There are two different prompts to keep straight. The system terminal prompt accepts commands such as python hello.py. Python’s interactive prompt, commonly shown as >>>, accepts Python statements; it is not where you type the full terminal command to launch a file. The Python tutorial documents interactive mode separately from running a named script (Python interpreter tutorial).
Troubleshoot a command that does not run

“Command not found” or “not recognized”: Python may not be installed, or your installation may use a different command name. Try

The file cannot be found: Check that the terminal is in the folder containing
hello.py, and verify the filename and extension. If the file is elsewhere, run it using its path. -
Your latest edits do not appear: Save the file before running it so the interpreter reads the contents you intended.

You see Python code or a syntax error instead of the expected output: Confirm that the code is saved in the
