To create and display recurring events in WordPress, use a calendar plugin that supports repeat schedules. With The Events Calendar, creating recurring events and embedding a calendar inside a page or post require the paid Events Calendar Pro add-on; the free plugin still provides the calendar and common views.
What you need before setting up a recurring event
WordPress itself does not provide one universal recurring-event workflow: the available controls depend on your calendar plugin. The steps below use The Events Calendar, whose free plugin provides list, month, and day views, while recurring-event creation is a Pro feature. The Events Calendar’s WordPress.org listing shows 600,000+ active installations; that is the directory’s displayed count, not a measure of market share or user satisfaction. Install and activate The Events Calendar and Events Calendar Pro, then make sure Pro is active and licensed. The vendor says recurring events are disabled without Pro. The Events Calendar: recurring events not working
How to create a recurring event
- In the WordPress dashboard, go to Events → Add New.
- Enter the event title and description, set its dates and times, and add venue or organizer details if they apply. The event editor follows a workflow similar to the standard WordPress editor. The Events Calendar on WordPress.org
- In Events Calendar Pro’s recurrence controls, choose the schedule pattern and the dates for the series.
- For an irregular schedule, add individual dates or exceptions for occurrences that should be skipped.
- Save the event. The plugin creates the recurring occurrences from the schedule.
When one recurrence pattern is not enough
The Events Calendar’s official Creating a Recurring Event guide states: “You can only add one recurrence pattern per event.” If one event needs several different patterns, do not assume a single rule can express them all; consider creating multiple recurring events and grouping them in a Series.

Choose how repeated dates appear in lists
For long-running series, decide whether visitors should see every occurrence or a more compact series entry. Events Calendar Pro’s “Recurring event instances” setting can condense occurrences in list-style views, and the vendor also documents a front-end toggle. Use the compact display when the full run of dates would overwhelm the list; show individual instances when visitors need to scan or choose specific dates.
