You can’t create a new NDI stream with consumer Skype: Microsoft retired Skype on May 5, 2025 (Microsoft Lifecycle lists May 6, 2025 in Pacific Time). The old Skype-for-podcasts workflow is historical. If your goal is to bring a remote guest’s call audio and video into production software, NDI documents a route through the new Microsoft Teams client on Windows—but eligibility for Teams Free accounts is not confirmed, so verify it before planning a show around it.
What Skype’s retirement means for the old NDI workflow
Skype for Content Creators formerly supported sending call feeds as NDI outputs, which made it useful in podcast production. Microsoft announced that Skype consumer would retire in May 2025; Microsoft Support gives May 5, 2025, while Microsoft Lifecycle records May 6, 2025 in Pacific Time. These dates reflect different Microsoft records and time-zone presentation. Neither makes the consumer Skype workflow available for a new setup today. Microsoft’s retirement notice explains the transition, and its Lifecycle entry lists the lifecycle date. Skype for Business is a separate product and is not covered by the consumer retirement notice.
Microsoft directed Skype users to Microsoft Teams Free. That does not establish that every Teams Free account can broadcast NDI. The available NDI instructions cover the new Teams client on Windows, but do not confirm consumer-account eligibility. Treat Teams as a possible current route only after checking that NDI broadcast is available for your account and configuration.

NDI is an IP-based technology ecosystem for sending and receiving audio and video over a network; it is not a calling or podcasting app on its own. In a remote interview workflow, the calling app provides the guest feed, NDI makes that media available on the network, and compatible receiving software can bring it into a production. The source and receiving devices need an appropriate network path. NDI describes connections among PCs, cameras, and other sources over an existing network; a wired Ethernet connection is an option, not a requirement for every setup. NDI’s overview explains the technology.

Set up the documented NDI route with new Teams on Windows
These steps describe the NDI-documented procedure for the new Teams client on Windows, not a guarantee that Teams Free accounts are eligible. Check current Microsoft and NDI guidance and your account’s available controls first. The NDI procedure requires installing additional NDI files, enabling the NDI permission, and turning on broadcast for the call.

- The new generation of the songwriter's interface: Plug in your mic and guitar and let Scarlett Solo 4th Gen bring big studio sound to wherever you make music
- Studio-quality sound: With a huge 120dB dynamic range, the newest generation of Scarlett uses the same converters as Focusrite’s flagship interfaces, found in the world's biggest studios
- Find your signature sound: Scarlett 4th Gen's improved Air mode lifts vocals and guitars to the front of the mix, adding musical presence and rich harmonic drive to your recordings
- All you need to record, mix and master your music: Includes industry-leading recording software and a full collection of record-making plugins
- Everything in the box: Includes Pro Tools Intro+, Ableton Live Lite, Cubase LE, and Hitmaker Expansion: a suite of essential effects, powerful software instruments, and easy-to-use mastering tools
- Install NDI Tools and the additional NDI files. Follow the official NDI Tools installation instructions and select the installer for your operating system. Use the official NDI download page rather than an unofficial installer. The download page listed version 6.3.2 on October 3, 2026; check the page for the current release, because versions change. The NDI instructions for Teams also call for installing additional NDI files. NDI Tools downloads and NDI’s Teams instructions provide the relevant details.
- Enable NDI in Teams permissions. In the new Teams client on Windows, open Settings and more > Settings > App permissions, then enable NDI. Labels can change; consult the current NDI instructions if the setting is absent.
- Start a call and enable its NDI broadcast. During the call, open More (the three-dot menu) and choose Broadcast over NDI. This is a per-call action in addition to enabling the app permission. If the option does not appear, do not assume a missing plugin alone is the cause: account eligibility, client version, operating system, and feature availability can all matter.
- Receive the feed in production software. Open a compatible NDI receiver or production application and select the available Teams source. Confirm the receiver’s current NDI compatibility and version requirements before the recording. NDI lists OBS Studio, Streamlabs, and vMix as creator integrations, but that is not a promise that every version or configuration works without additional setup.
Prepare the network and recording workflow
Because NDI sends media over IP, make sure the Teams computer and receiving production system can reach one another through the network in use. A wired Ethernet connection may be a sensible choice for a fixed studio setup, but NDI does not say every user must buy or install new cabling. A Cat6 cable is an optional accessory if you choose a wired layout, not a prerequisite for NDI. NDI advertises formats up to 4K 60fps in 10-bit HDR, but that is a vendor description of supported formats—not a measured result or a guarantee for your device, network, Teams account, or receiver. NDI’s creator page describes those formats.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Check before recording that the guest call is visible and audible in the production application.
- Confirm your selected audio source and monitor the recorded output; network video availability does not by itself ensure your podcast mix is correct.
- Record a short test with the same account, client, receiver, and network you plan to use for the episode. This verifies your own configuration without assuming a particular performance level.
Troubleshoot missing or unusable NDI output
| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Broadcast over NDI is missing | The documented steps target new Teams on Windows; account eligibility for Teams Free is not confirmed. | Verify current account and client eligibility with Microsoft and NDI. Confirm NDI is enabled in App Permissions and the additional NDI files are installed. |
| The receiver cannot find the Teams source | The per-call broadcast may not be enabled, or the devices may not have a working network path between them. | Enable Broadcast over NDI in the active call and confirm the source and receiver can communicate over the network. |
| The source appears but audio or video is absent | The issue may be in the call, source selection, receiver configuration, or current compatibility. | Check the call’s audio/video, choose the right source in the receiver, and confirm its current NDI and application-version requirements. |
| The setup differs from an online Skype walkthrough | Many instructions describe the retired consumer Skype workflow, whose exact historical interface is not established here. | Do not rely on old menu paths for a new installation; use current Teams and NDI documentation for the supported configuration you can access. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a separate use case—keeping a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos—StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. It is not an NDI guest-call tool and does not go live from a camera; it loops uploaded videos to YouTube.
