To run a repeating preschool story stream, put compatible video files in an FFmpeg concat list, loop that list, encode the output to a YouTube-supported profile, and send it to the broadcast’s RTMPS server URL with its stream key. FFmpeg handles playback and delivery; YouTube Live receives the encoded feed. The example below is a starting point for compatible inputs, not a tested universal command: check it with your installed FFmpeg build and actual files before scheduling a long broadcast.
Choose how to join the story videos
FFmpeg offers two main ways to sequence files. Pick based on whether the source streams are compatible, not simply whether their filenames or containers look alike.
| Method | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Concat demuxer | Files whose streams, codecs, and time bases match. It reads a list and emits the files one after another, and can avoid re-encoding at the concatenation stage. | Incompatible streams or inaccurate durations can cause timestamp artifacts or gaps. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation. |
| Concat filter | Inputs that need normalization or re-encoding for a consistent output. | Provides more control over the resulting streams but requires encoding work. FFmpeg recommends the filter when re-encoding is needed; see its concatenating video FAQ. |
Do not confuse the concat demuxer with the concat protocol. The protocol joins file data and applies only to certain containers; it is not a general substitute for a playlist.
Prepare and check the source files
Inventory the clips
Put the stories in the intended order and inspect every file before building the live output. For example, ffprobe -v error -show_streams -show_format story-01.mp4 displays stream and format details for one file. Compare video and audio codecs, stream presence, time bases, dimensions, frame rates, and durations. Repeat for each clip; the demuxer needs matching stream layouts and parameters for clean concatenation.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Make sure each source is accessible to the account running FFmpeg. Prefer simple local filenames and paths in the same directory as the list. If clips differ—for example, one has no audio, or frame rates or codecs vary—normalize them first or use a concat-filter workflow that re-encodes. A single universal preschool-story preset is not established; choose a target profile appropriate to your material and test it.
Create the FFconcat list
Save a plain-text file named stories.ffconcat with the header on its first line and one file entry per clip, in playback order:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'story-01.mp4'
file 'story-02.mp4'
file 'story-03.mp4'
Use paths FFmpeg can access. With uncomplicated relative filenames, keep the default safe-path behavior rather than disabling it. If you must use unusual or absolute paths, understand the security implications before changing that setting; do not use paths from an untrusted source. First play the list once and check the transitions and full sequence. The demuxer places each file after the previous one using timestamps; inaccurate duration information or streams with unequal actual lengths can produce artifacts or gaps. The FFmpeg full documentation describes the behavior for the release you have installed.

Encode and send the loop to YouTube Live
Pick a practical ingestion profile
For a straightforward SDR starting point, use H.264 video, constant bitrate, AAC stereo audio, and a two-second keyframe interval over RTMPS. YouTube’s encoder guidance, checked October 3, 2026, recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds; its recommended bitrate depends on resolution and frame rate. These are ingestion recommendations, not guarantees about the quality your upload connection can sustain.
| H.264 profile | YouTube recommended bitrate | YouTube minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
For the sample command below, 720p at 30 fps is selected because its recommended H.264 bitrate is 4 Mbps. If you choose another profile, change the resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe settings accordingly. YouTube recommends testing your upload speed, choosing a quality that fits the available connection, and checking stream health. Its live encoder settings and bitrate guidance also covers other codecs and settings.
Create the broadcast and get its connection details
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the broadcast. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the broadcast. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Start FFmpeg using the server URL and key in the output format expected by your encoder. The example uses placeholders; insert your actual values locally rather than publishing or sharing the key.
Example for compatible files
This shell example assumes that the files in stories.ffconcat have compatible streams, including the same audio/video stream layout, and that your FFmpeg build supports the selected codecs and options. It loops the playlist indefinitely and re-encodes its output to H.264 and AAC. Replace the placeholders with the RTMPS server URL and stream key supplied for your broadcast; some setups provide a combined output address, so follow the format shown in Live Control Room.

At 30 fps, a 60-frame GOP sets a two-second keyframe interval. The command scales and pads video to 1280×720 while preserving its aspect ratio, then sets a 30 fps output. If the audio is absent or inconsistent across files, this command may not work as written; prepare matching audio streams or use the filter path below. Test the actual output before relying on it for a long stream. FFmpeg options and behavior can vary by build and release.

One manageable option is to normalize each clip into a consistent intermediate format before creating the concat list. For example, this template converts an individual file to 720p, 30 fps, H.264, and AAC:
ffmpeg -i INPUT.mp4
-vf "scale=1280:720:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1280:720:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2,fps=30,setsar=1,format=yuv420p"
-c:v libx264 -preset medium -b:v 4M -g 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
NORMALIZED_OUTPUT.mp4
Run an adapted conversion for each source, check the resulting files, then list those outputs in playback order. This example assumes each input has audio; files without audio need an intentional audio-handling step, such as adding silence, so that the final streams match. Alternatively, use the concat filter to join and re-encode the inputs in a filter graph. A filter graph must account for the actual number of inputs and their audio/video streams, so it cannot be supplied as one reliable command for an unspecified set of files. See FFmpeg’s concat guidance and test against your files.

Set the audience and check content rights
YouTube requires creators to declare whether a video or live stream is Made for Kids. Preschool-directed stories may be intended for children, but the creator is responsible for setting the audience accurately; do not rely on automated classification to decide. Set the live stream audience in Live Control Room and consult YouTube’s audience-setting guidance.
For a Made for Kids live stream, YouTube lists live chat and related features as unavailable, and personalized ads are disabled, though contextual ads may still appear. Other restricted features include comments and reminders. Do not build the stream plan around live chat, Super Chat, personalized advertising, or notification-driven audience growth. See YouTube’s live-stream restrictions.
Only stream stories, music, artwork, and other material you have the right to use. The platform setup does not establish that a particular story or recording is cleared for broadcast. Check the rights for every asset and the rules that apply to your content and location.

Test, monitor, and plan for interruptions
Before going live for an extended period, run a representative test with story movement and sound similar to the actual stream. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and listen to the received audio; the encoder may be running even when the feed has a problem. YouTube specifically recommends testing with representative audio and movement in its encoder guidance.
A looping FFmpeg process does not by itself guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 uptime. A host restart, power or network loss, FFmpeg exit, or YouTube disconnect can interrupt delivery. Plan how you will notice an interruption and restart the encoder in the environment where it runs. The exact monitoring or restart method depends on your operating system and host; no particular supervisor or uptime design is established here.
Keep a separate archive if you need the full program
Staying live and preserving a complete recording are different requirements. YouTube says it can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours, but streams over 12 hours may not be captured. For a nominally 24/7 broadcast, do not rely on YouTube’s archive to retain the entire program. YouTube recommends making a local recording as a backup; see its live-stream archive guidance.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Decide how long you need to retain recordings and estimate storage from your actual output bitrate and duration. A local disk or another planned archive can serve as a separate copy; choose capacity based on that estimate rather than assuming a 24-hour stream will fit in a particular amount of storage.
Troubleshoot common problems
- FFmpeg rejects the list or cannot open a file: Check the first-line
ffconcat version 1.0header, spelling, quoting, file order, and paths from the process’s working directory. Keep paths safe and accessible. - Clips fail at a transition or show a gap: Compare their codecs, stream layouts, time bases, and actual durations. Normalize mismatched sources or use a concat filter with re-encoding; investigate inaccurate duration information.
- The stream has no sound or inconsistent audio: Inspect whether every clip has an audio stream and whether formats and layouts match. Add or normalize audio as needed before concatenating.
- YouTube reports poor stream health or the feed disconnects: Check upload capacity against the chosen bitrate, verify the RTMPS server URL and key, test with representative content, and monitor YouTube’s health information. Reduce the selected profile if the connection cannot sustain it.
- The stream ends when the computer or host stops: FFmpeg is sending from the machine where it runs; a loop cannot continue after that process or host becomes unavailable. Arrange suitable host monitoring and restart handling, or use a cloud service designed to keep uploaded videos running.
Or let it run in the cloud
