Build an Etsy-like marketplace with self-hosted WordPress, WooCommerce, and a multivendor extension such as Dokan or WooCommerce Product Vendors. WooCommerce handles the underlying store and checkout; the marketplace extension adds seller registration, vendor permissions, storefronts, commissions, shipping workflows, and payouts. Plan those operating rules before inviting sellers because no plugin automatically reproduces every Etsy feature or resolves your tax and legal obligations.

What you need before setup

  • Self-hosted WordPress with a hosting account, domain, and administrator access.
  • WooCommerce installed and configured as the store foundation.
  • A multivendor extension: Dokan or WooCommerce Product Vendors are two documented routes.
  • A payment-gateway account that supports your business location and chosen payout flow.
  • Decisions about seller approval, commissions, fulfillment, refunds, taxes, and withdrawals.

Dokan lists self-hosted WordPress, WooCommerce, Dokan Lite or Pro, and a payment-gateway account among its starting requirements. See the Dokan basic configuration guide for its current setup sequence. Product Vendors publishes separate compatibility requirements, including WooCommerce 6.0 or later, WordPress 5.6 or later, PHP 7.0 or later, and a PayPal account; confirm the live documentation before installation at WooCommerce Product Vendors.

Choose the marketplace extension

Choose based on the seller workflow and payment operation you actually need, not on the promise of an identical Etsy clone.

Decision area Dokan WooCommerce Product Vendors
Foundation Self-hosted WordPress, WooCommerce, Dokan, and a payment gateway account. WooCommerce, compatible WordPress and PHP versions, and a PayPal account; verify current requirements.
Seller workflow Documentation covers vendor registration, marketplace settings, vendor dashboards, and product listing functions. Vendors receive pages listing their products, can add or edit products, and use roles scoped to their associated vendor work.
Commissions and payouts Payment behavior depends on WooCommerce, the selected gateway, and the current Dokan plan and configuration. The store owner controls commissions. Automated payouts require PayPal Payouts and a pre-approved PayPal Business account; manual commission payment is also available.
Shipping Supports WooCommerce shipping configuration and a separate Dokan shipping path; the documented Dokan shipping feature may require premium access. Vendors fulfill and ship orders. Optional per-product shipping can pass rate entry and shipping costs to vendors.
Best fit Compare its dashboard, shipping tools, plan limits, and gateway support with your seller process. Consider it when owner-controlled commissions and its documented vendor workflow match your operation.

Dokan’s plugin listing is available at WordPress.org. Current prices, plan limits, and total ownership costs are not established here, so check each vendor’s live feature matrix before committing.

Build the WordPress foundation

  1. Install self-hosted WordPress and secure administrator access.
  2. Install WooCommerce, then set the store address, currency, selling locations, shipping locations, and payment gateway under WooCommerce settings.
  3. Set WordPress permalinks to /%postname%/ if following Dokan’s documented marketplace setup.
  4. Create essential customer-facing pages such as the shop, cart, checkout, account, terms, privacy, returns, and seller information pages.
  5. Install only the multivendor extension you selected and complete its setup wizard or documented configuration screens.

Configure seller registration and permissions

Enable vendor registration in the marketplace extension and decide whether applications are automatically accepted or reviewed. Dokan documents vendor-registration settings. WooCommerce’s marketplace documentation explains that existing logged-in users may apply by default and that eligible roles can be configured; see Multi Vendor Marketplace.

Define the seller lifecycle

  • Collect the legal name, contact details, payout destination, tax information, product category, and any verification documents your business requires.
  • Choose who approves applications and what happens when a seller is suspended or removed.
  • Limit sellers to their own products and orders. Product Vendors’ vendor roles are scoped to associated vendor products and settings.
  • Write rules for prohibited products, listing quality, response times, returns, refunds, and disputes before applications open.

Decide how checkout, commissions, and payouts work

Map the money flow in writing: whether your store collects the customer’s entire checkout payment and pays vendors later, or whether your gateway and extension support another arrangement. Never advertise “instant” or automatic seller payouts until the provider, country, account type, and plugin plan have been verified.

Product Vendors payout choices

Product Vendors lets the store owner set commissions. Its automated payout route uses PayPal Payouts and requires a pre-approved PayPal Business account. You can instead calculate and pay commissions manually. PayPal approval and regional availability are separate from WordPress configuration.

Other marketplace withdrawal methods

WooCommerce’s marketplace documentation describes PayPal and bank-transfer withdrawal options, but the available method depends on the installed extension and gateway. Confirm current gateway support, identity checks, minimum balances, currencies, fees, and settlement timing.

Set shipping and fulfillment rules

Choose one of three models: the store sets all rates, each seller sets rates for their own products, or a mixed model. Product Vendors documents a seller-fulfilled workflow and optional per-product shipping that can pass rates to vendors when enabled by the store owner. Dokan documents both standard WooCommerce shipping and its own shipping configuration.

  1. Create shipping zones and methods in WooCommerce.
  2. Configure the marketplace extension’s vendor-shipping settings, if used.
  3. Specify who supplies packaging, dispatches orders, handles tracking, and pays return shipping.
  4. Place a test order containing products from at least two vendors. Check whether rates, taxes, order splits, emails, and fulfillment responsibilities appear correctly at checkout and in each seller dashboard.

Read the detailed role and fulfillment behavior in the WooCommerce Vendor Guide.

Configure tax settings without treating them as legal advice

Dokan uses WooCommerce’s tax system and places tax-rate configuration with the marketplace administrator. The plugin documentation does not determine when your business must register, collect, remit, or report tax. Those obligations depend on your location, customers, products, registrations, and marketplace structure; obtain qualified local advice and configure WooCommerce accordingly.

Test every journey before launch

  • Seller application: submit an application as a new user, approve or reject it, and verify the resulting role and dashboard access.
  • Product management: have a seller create, edit, submit, and remove a product; confirm that another seller’s products remain inaccessible.
  • Customer checkout: buy from one seller and then from multiple sellers, testing shipping, tax display, payment confirmation, and order splitting.
  • Fulfillment: verify seller notifications, tracking entry, customer emails, and the status changes visible to the store administrator.
  • Refunds and disputes: define who authorizes refunds and test a full and partial refund through your gateway.
  • Payout: perform a manual commission payment or a permitted test payout and reconcile the gateway, WooCommerce, and vendor records.

What WordPress will not decide for you

  • Tax registration and collection responsibilities.
  • Seller identity verification, consumer-protection duties, and marketplace terms.
  • Whether a payment provider supports split payments or payouts in your country.
  • Commission rates, reserves, refund deductions, chargebacks, and payout schedules.
  • Current extension pricing, feature tiers, and compatibility after future WordPress, WooCommerce, PHP, or gateway updates.

The practical launch sequence is therefore: select the operating model, configure WordPress and WooCommerce, install and restrict the marketplace extension, document payment and shipping rules, obtain appropriate tax and legal guidance, and complete end-to-end tests before opening seller registration.
