Prepare a holding scene in your encoder before an interruption, then switch to it without ending the church’s active YouTube broadcast. In OBS, that means adding a clearly named scene with a static image or looping video, checking its picture and audio, and keeping the encoder connected to the same broadcast. When the service is ready, switch back to the service scene.
Prepare the holding screen before you need it
Create the scene while the stream is not under pressure. OBS is one option; YouTube supports encoder-based streaming through software or hardware, but scene controls differ between encoders. Treat these as practical OBS steps and confirm the labels in the version you use.
- Create a scene: In OBS, use the Scenes panel to add a scene and name it “Holding” or “Technical difficulties.” Keep the name obvious so a volunteer can find it quickly.
- Add the visual: Add an image source for a static screen, or a media source for a video. Use a simple church-approved background and readable text, such as “We’ll be right back” or “Please stay with us while we restore the service.” Make sure it is legible in a phone-sized preview.
- Use a careful message: Add a return estimate only when the team can stand behind it. For an unexpected outage, avoid promising a time that is not known.
- Preview the scene: Confirm the background and text fill the intended frame. Check that the scene does not expose a camera, desktop, or unrelated source.
- Check audio: Ensure the holding scene has only the audio you intend. A static image can be silent; a video may contain sound or repeat unexpectedly. Test it in the installed encoder before relying on it.
Choose a static image, video, or countdown

Connect the encoder to the church broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the church broadcast.
- Copy the broadcast’s stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe this connection process at Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Keep the stream key private: it is a connection credential for sending video to the broadcast.
- Start the encoder and wait for its signal to appear in Live Control Room. Check the preview and status before relying on the output. For a scheduled stream, YouTube says to click Go live in Live Control Room after the encoder preview appears.
- If possible, confirm the picture from the public watch page as well as the control-room preview.
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days to live stream. First-time live-streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not wait until an emergency to check access. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

Switch to the holding screen during an interruption
- In OBS, select the prepared Holding scene. This changes the picture in the current encoder output; it does not require starting a new broadcast when the encoder remains connected to that output.
- Verify that the holding picture is reaching YouTube. If a second team member can check the public watch page, ask them to do so while the operator monitors the encoder and Live Control Room.
- When service is ready, check the camera, presentation, and audio sources, then switch back to the Service scene.
The scene-switch workflow is specific to how an encoder such as OBS composes its output; other encoder interfaces may behave differently. Confirm the actual controls in your installed encoder.

Keep the broadcast and its archive in perspective
Switching scenes within the existing encoder output avoids deliberately ending and restarting the broadcast just to cover an interruption. It does not guarantee that every technical failure will leave the connection intact; if the encoder disconnects, restore its connection and check the broadcast status before telling viewers the stream has resumed.
YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when ended. That guidance does not establish that an indefinitely running stream will be saved as one uninterrupted archive longer than 12 hours. Plan recordings and access to service content separately if the church needs a dependable archive.

Troubleshoot the holding screen
- Holding scene is not visible in the preview: Confirm you selected the intended scene and that its image or media source is enabled and positioned in frame.
- YouTube preview has no incoming signal: Check that the encoder is running, the correct stream URL and key are entered, and the broadcast is the one selected in Live Control Room.
- The public page still shows the service: Check the encoder’s program output, allow for a short delivery delay, and confirm the change on the watch page rather than assuming a local preview is live.
- Unexpected sound continues: Inspect active audio sources and the video’s audio track; mute or disable sources not intended for the holding scene.
- A countdown restarts or shows the wrong time: Replace it with a static holding message or have a person update the message to reflect the actual recovery status.
- You cannot start a first livestream: Verify channel eligibility ahead of time; first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
