To create an animated GIF in Linux, choose the method that matches your source: use FFmpeg to convert a video, ImageMagick to combine ordered still images, or Peek to record a screen area. The commands below get you started; preview the result and adjust its timing, crop, and dimensions for your needs.

Choose the right Linux GIF workflow

Tool Best input What it does Main trade-off
FFmpeg An existing video Converts and filters media from the command line. FFmpeg documentation Timing and color limits of GIF still apply. FFmpeg GIF muxer documentation
ImageMagick An ordered set of image files, or frames to manipulate Assembles still images and can select or resize frames. ImageMagick command-line processing ImageMagick says it is not particularly suited to digital video. ImageMagick video examples
Peek A live screen area Records a screen region, with GIF, WebM, and MP4 among its formats. Debian Peek manual Package availability and dependencies vary by distribution. Peek project README

Convert a video clip with FFmpeg

For an existing video, the simplest starting point is to pass the input file and a GIF output file to FFmpeg:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 output.gif

Replace input.mp4 with your video’s filename and output.gif with the desired output name. FFmpeg supports media inputs, filters, and output formats; most options apply to the next input or output file, so option order matters. See the FFmpeg command documentation when adding options such as trimming or resizing.

Keep the excerpt short and choose dimensions and frame rate for the intended use rather than assuming one setting is best for every clip. Preview the GIF; if it is too large, too choppy, or poorly framed, adjust the selection, scale, or frame rate and create it again.

Understand GIF timing and looping

GIF timing is quantized. The FFmpeg project documentation explains that “the delay between two frames can therefore not be smaller than one centisecond.” Its GIF muxer also supports loop settings: 0 means indefinite looping by default, -1 disables looping, and a positive value selects a number of loops. The muxer’s final_delay is specified in centiseconds. Check the FFmpeg GIF muxer documentation for the options and behavior supported by your installed version.

Make an animated GIF from still images with ImageMagick

ImageMagick can assemble images into an animation. From a directory containing the intended frames, run:

The input files must sort into the frame order you want. If ordinary filename sorting would put them out of order, rename or explicitly sequence the images before assembling them. For example, numbered filenames such as frame-01.jpg, frame-02.jpg, and frame-03.jpg make the intended order easier to maintain.

You can also select a frame from a multi-frame GIF with quoted bracket syntax:

ImageMagick’s command-line tools support frame selection and resizing; consult its command-line processing documentation for syntax. Its video examples caution that ImageMagick is not particularly suited to handling digital video, so use FFmpeg when your starting point is a video clip.

Record a screen area with Peek

Peek is a graphical option for capturing a short, specific area of the screen, such as a UI demonstration or a bug reproduction. The Debian manual describes Peek as optimized for animated GIFs and notes that it can also record WebM or MP4.

Installation is distribution-dependent: the Peek project README lists package and Flatpak installation routes, requires FFmpeg at runtime, and identifies gifski as an optional dependency for improved GIF quality. Check your distribution’s current package information and dependency requirements rather than assuming a single installation command will work on every Linux system.

Keep the GIF clear and manageable

GIF uses a constrained color palette: the format limit is 256 colors per frame. ImageMagick’s discussion of GIF and video explains that quantization, or reducing colors to fit the palette, affects both appearance and file size. ImageMagick video examples

  • Use only the section of video or screen that viewers need, and crop away irrelevant area.
  • Choose dimensions appropriate to where the GIF will be displayed; larger frames can increase file size.
  • Preview the animation at its intended size and check for unexpected frame order, pauses, or visual changes from color reduction.
  • If motion looks uneven, adjust the source selection or frame rate while keeping GIF’s centisecond timing constraint in mind.

Troubleshoot common problems

The image sequence plays in the wrong order

Check how the filenames sort. Rename or sequence the inputs so alphabetical order matches the intended animation order, then regenerate the GIF.

The GIF is too large

Shorten the source, crop out unneeded content, or reduce the output dimensions. Preview each change to make sure the result still communicates the motion clearly.

The animation appears choppy or has odd pauses

Check the source frame selection and timing, and remember that GIF frame delays cannot be shorter than one centisecond in FFmpeg’s GIF muxer. Adjust the conversion and preview the output rather than assuming the original video’s timing will carry over unchanged.

Peek will not install or run

Confirm that Peek is available for your Linux distribution, and check its runtime dependencies. The project lists FFmpeg as required and gifski as optional; package availability and installation details can differ. Peek project README
