You can turn cleared tabletop RPG session recordings into a 24/7 YouTube live stream by sending a looping playlist through an encoder. YouTube needs the encoder’s server URL and stream key; the main design decision is whether the encoder runs on a computer you keep online or in a cloud service. Plan stream rotation separately: YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be archived at all.
Before you stream: clear the session recordings and assets
Make sure your group has permission for the recordings to be rebroadcast, not merely recorded for the original session. Check participant agreements and rights for music, artwork, overlays, maps, and other third-party material. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility for necessary rights, including music licensing rights, on the content provider: YouTube livestream terms and conditions.
Label the channel and stream so viewers understand that they are watching session replays. Permission to use a recording does not by itself determine whether the channel or stream is eligible for monetization.
Choose where the playlist encoder will run
YouTube receives a live feed from an encoder, which can be software or hardware. In YouTube Studio, you provide the encoder with a server URL and stream key. The key lets the encoder send video to the selected live stream, so treat it as a credential and do not publish it.

| Local encoder | Your computer or encoding hardware | The device, playback software, power, and internet connection must remain available while the locally generated feed is live. You control the encoder and can keep a separate local recording. |
| Cloud encoder | A hosted service | Compare supported file formats, playlist and looping controls, monitoring, broadcast rotation, data retention, pricing, and service availability. Workflow and archive controls depend on the service. |
YouTube’s setup guide covers connecting an encoder: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. For a cloud option, StreamNeo is #1 to consider for this use: it runs an uploaded-video playlist from the cloud, keeps going with your computer off, and streams any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with the first day free.
Set up the stream and connect the encoder
- Confirm live access. YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available. Check current eligibility guidance at Get started with live streaming.
- Create or schedule a stream. In YouTube Studio, open the live-stream creation flow, choose the stream details and privacy, and create or schedule the broadcast. Use the stream’s settings to obtain the YouTube server URL and stream key. Exact interface labels may change; follow YouTube’s current encoder setup guide if the Studio layout differs.
- Configure the encoder. Select the cleared session files or playlist, configure continuous playback or looping, then enter the server URL and stream key supplied by YouTube. Start the encoder and confirm in Live Control Room that YouTube is receiving the feed before sharing the stream.
- Check the viewer-facing stream. Verify picture and sound, the correct stream title and description, and the intended privacy setting. Keep the stream key private; if it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
Design around YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit
For streams shorter than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive the broadcast. If a stream exceeds 12 hours, YouTube says it may not be captured at all. That makes one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast a poor choice if you need a dependable separate VOD for every rotation. See Archive live streams.

For session-by-session archives, arrange to complete or rotate the viewer-facing broadcast before it crosses the 12-hour boundary, and retain source files or a local recording as backup. A continuous feed and separate broadcast archives can be managed through an API-aware setup: Google documents a pattern in which a 24/7 stream remains live while a distinct broadcast resource is completed. This is a technical API workflow, not an automatic Studio feature; see YouTube Live Streaming API: Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.
Set expectations for pausing and rewinding
Enable DVR if viewers should be able to pause or rewind during a current broadcast. DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, and viewers cannot seek to before the current broadcast began. See Turn on DVR on live streams.

Monitor copyright and monetization risks
YouTube scans live streams for third-party material. If it detects content such as copyrighted music, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. A rights holder may need to allowlist your channel even when you have a license. Completed archives can also receive Content ID claims. Check Live Control Room for warnings and review Copyright issues with live streams.
YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams. Repetitive or mass-produced programming may be ineligible, and permission to rebroadcast a session does not alone establish that the channel meets reused-content requirements. Review YouTube channel monetization policies and make the channel’s role in creating the sessions clear.

Troubleshoot the common failure points
- You cannot start a live stream: check channel verification, the 90-day restriction requirement, and whether first-time activation is still pending.
- YouTube shows no incoming feed: confirm that the encoder is running and that its server URL and stream key match the stream you created. If the key was changed or exposed, update the encoder with the current key.
- The playlist stops or repeats incorrectly: check the encoder’s playback and loop settings, file availability, and whether the local machine or hosted service is still running.
- The stream is interrupted or shows a warning: inspect Live Control Room and resolve the detected third-party content issue. For licensed material, check whether the rights holder must allowlist the channel.
- No archive appears: check stream duration first. A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Keep a backup recording or source file and plan broadcast rotation rather than relying on one endless broadcast.
- Viewers cannot rewind far enough: DVR cannot reach earlier than the current broadcast’s start, and it may be limited or unavailable after 12 hours.
