To keep recorded chess games playing as a YouTube live broadcast, run the videos as a playlist through a streaming encoder such as OBS and send that encoder output to a YouTube Live event. YouTube does not automatically turn an ordinary uploaded video into a continuous live stream. You can run the encoder on a local computer or use a cloud service that plays uploaded videos; either way, plan for monitoring, rights, and interruptions.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified, has no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days, and is operated by a streamer who is at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
- Chess-game recordings in a format your chosen playback and encoding setup can use, plus any board visuals, commentary, overlays, or music you intend to include.
- A playlist or other ordered rotation of the recordings.
- An encoder, such as OBS, and a reliable internet connection if you are running it locally. OBS is open-source software; its Help Portal links to streaming setup and encoding guidance and recommends its Auto-Configuration Wizard for basic settings.
- A plan to monitor the encoder, connection, YouTube player, audio and video, and stream health—and to respond if the computer or connection stops.
YouTube identifies encoder-based streaming as a method for gaming and other video-intensive content. Its official guidance describes sending an encoder feed to a live event, not a one-click feature that loops an ordinary upload as a live broadcast.
How to livestream pre-recorded videos on YouTube 24/7 with OBS
1. Prepare and check the chess recordings
Review each file from beginning to end. Confirm that the board is legible at the intended viewing size, commentary is understandable, and the audio level is consistent between recordings. If a game ends with a long blank segment or an abrupt cut, edit it before adding it to the rotation. Decide whether the stream should show a title card or other transition between games.

The playlist is the content rotation; OBS is the encoder that plays the rotation and sends its output to YouTube. Do not assume YouTube will loop the playlist for you. Configure playback or playlist looping in the software you use, then verify it advances to the next recording and returns to the beginning as intended.

2. Verify the YouTube channel and create the live event
- Sign in to YouTube with the channel that will host the broadcast. Confirm the channel is verified and eligible to livestream. YouTube states that a channel must have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days and that the streamer must be at least 16.
- Open YouTube Studio and create a live stream using the encoder workflow. Set the title, description, audience setting, visibility, and any other event details appropriate for the channel.
- In the event’s stream settings, copy the stream key and server URL or connection details shown by YouTube. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to the event. Keep it private, and reset it in YouTube if it is exposed.
- Leave the YouTube Live Control Room open so you can inspect the incoming feed and preview before making the event public.
3. Configure OBS to play the playlist and send it to YouTube
- Install OBS from the official project and open it. For a first configuration, run the Auto-Configuration Wizard from OBS’s Tools menu and follow its prompts.
- Set up a scene that displays the chess video. Add a media or playlist playback source using the files and playlist arrangement you prepared. Configure the source or playback method to continue to the next file and loop the playlist; test this behavior rather than assuming a single-file source will rotate through multiple games.
- Open OBS Settings, then Stream. Select YouTube if offered, or select a custom service and enter the server URL and stream key provided in the YouTube event. Avoid sharing screenshots that reveal the key.
- Check the video canvas and output so the game board fits the frame without cropping its coordinates, clocks, or notation. Use a resolution and frame rate appropriate to the source material and the computer’s encoding capacity; there is no chess-specific minimum bitrate, resolution, or frame-rate figure established here. Follow the current YouTube and OBS guidance for encoder settings rather than copying a preset blindly.
- Check audio sources. If the recordings contain commentary or other audio, make sure OBS captures it once at a usable level; if they are silent, confirm that an unintended microphone or desktop source is not adding noise.
- Start the OBS stream and watch the YouTube Live Control Room preview. Do not treat OBS displaying “streaming” as proof that viewers can see and hear the event correctly.
4. Run a complete test before leaving it unattended
YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend configuring in advance and starting the encoder early enough to test. Before relying on a continuous broadcast, use the preview to inspect the board, playback, audio, and transitions; verify the archive file grows; and check that the stream is accessible on a phone as well as a computer. Let the playlist run long enough to confirm it advances through a file boundary and loops as intended.
Once the event is live, keep an eye on the encoder, network, player, audio and video, and YouTube’s stream-health information. Google’s LiveStreams API exposes stream health status for diagnosis. YouTube’s preflight advice is a safeguard, not a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 operation. If the event ends, stop the encoder as appropriate; YouTube’s tips also advise stopping the encoder after the event ends.

Choose between a local encoder and cloud playout

Check rights before broadcasting chess recordings
Do not assume that because a recording depicts a chess game, it is automatically free to rebroadcast. Establish that you have permission or another valid basis to use each recording and every separate element in it: event footage, commentary, board graphics, music, overlays, and other included material. Rights depend on the material and applicable jurisdiction; verify them for your specific files before streaming or monetizing the channel.

YouTube does not receive the encoder feed
- Check that OBS is connected to the correct event and that its server URL and stream key match the values shown in YouTube Studio.
- If the stream key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube and update OBS with the new key.
- Confirm that OBS is actively streaming and that the computer still has internet access. Check the Live Control Room for an incoming preview rather than relying only on the OBS status.
The stream starts but a game does not play or the playlist stops
- Check that the playback source points to the intended files and that the files remain available at their configured locations.
- Test the playlist’s next-file and loop behavior in a full run. A single media source may not provide the playlist rotation you expect; use a playback arrangement that explicitly supports it.
- Inspect the preview at a file transition for a frozen frame, blank screen, or missing audio, then adjust the source or playlist configuration and retest.
The picture is cropped, blurry, or unstable
- Check the OBS canvas and source fit so the board and important labels stay inside the frame.
- If encoding or upload cannot keep pace, use an output setting the computer and connection can sustain. Consult YouTube’s and OBS’s current encoder guidance; no universal chess-specific bitrate or resolution is established for this setup.
- Use YouTube’s stream-health information and the OBS preview to distinguish a source problem from an encoder or connection problem.
Commentary is missing, doubled, or noisy
- Inspect OBS audio meters and source selection while a recording plays. Ensure the recording’s audio is captured, and remove or mute unintended microphone or desktop audio sources.
- Listen to the YouTube preview on another device, not only through the streaming computer’s monitoring path.
The stream goes offline while unattended
A local setup depends on the computer and its connection continuing to work. Arrange a human check or alerting process for the encoder, network, player, audio, and YouTube stream health, and decide who will restart the encoder or investigate a failure. Do not treat a successful test as an uptime commitment.
