That is a generation setting—not proof that the finished file is accessible or meets every WCAG criterion or legal requirement. Start with meaningful, accessible HTML, generate the PDF, then inspect and test the output.
Request tagged PDF output from DocRaptor
DocRaptor’s documentation gives the key setting: “To create a tagged document with DocRaptor, set the prince_options[profile] parameter to PDF/UA-1.” In a JSON request, profile belongs inside prince_options:
{
"type": "pdf",
"document_content": "<html lang="en"><head><title>Accessible report</title></head><body><h1>Accessible report</h1><p>Report text.</p></body></html>",
"prince_options": {
"profile": "PDF/UA-1"
}
}
Before relying on the option, check the DocRaptor API reference for the pipeline applicable to your account: it lists PDF/UA-1 support on pipeline 7 and later. DocRaptor accepts HTML for PDF generation. JavaScript is disabled by default; enable the javascript option if your source depends on it. See DocRaptor’s HTML and JavaScript tutorial.
Prepare HTML that carries the document’s meaning
PDF tagging can preserve structure expressed in the source, but it cannot reliably infer every relationship from visual appearance. Author the HTML as a document first, then style it.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use semantic elements, headings, and reading order
- Use headings in a logical hierarchy and semantic elements for paragraphs, lists, quotations, and tables. DocRaptor says Prince maps common elements such as headings and block quotes to PDF tags.
- Write the source in the intended reading order. CSS can move content visually without changing the logical order represented by tags.
- For tables, identify headers and captions clearly. Review the generated tags; complex structures or a table of contents may require custom tagging.
Set language, title, and image alternatives
- Set the main language on the root element, for example
<html lang="en">, and mark passages in another language where appropriate. - Give the HTML document a meaningful
<title>. DocRaptor notes that assistive devices use the document title rather than the filename. Author and subject metadata can also be useful. - Provide meaningful alternatives for informative images. Mark decorative imagery so assistive technology can ignore it; W3C PDF techniques describe alternatives and treating decorative images as artifacts.
Check visual presentation and contrast
- Do not communicate meaning through color alone. Pair color cues with text, and make links distinguishable by more than color.
- For WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.3, the contrast threshold is 4.5:1 for ordinary text and 3:1 for large-scale text, subject to exceptions including inactive interface components, pure decoration, and logos. Consult W3C’s explanation of Contrast (Minimum).
Inspect and test the generated PDF
Successful conversion and a PDF/UA-1 profile do not establish that the resulting document works for its readers. Review the actual PDF, including content whose visual layout may conceal structural errors.
- Inspect the tag tree. Confirm that headings, paragraphs, lists, table headers and captions, image alternatives, abbreviations, quotations, footnotes, and bibliography entries have meaningful structure. DocRaptor warns that some material, including a table of contents, may need custom tagging.
- Review bookmarks. DocRaptor creates bookmarks from headings by default. Check that they reflect the document outline and help readers navigate.
- Check reading order against the page. Compare the tag order with the intended meaning, especially in multi-column or otherwise complex layouts. W3C explains that reading order is primarily determined by the order of tagged elements, and complex layouts may not convert as intended.
- Test with assistive technology. Read the document with a screen reader or read-aloud tool. For interactive content, check keyboard tab order as well as the visual arrangement.
- Run a validator, then review manually. DocRaptor names CommonLook PDF Validator and PAC as checking tools, axesPDF as a checking and remediation tool, and pdfGoHTML as a tag-inspection tool. DocRaptor notes that pdfGoHTML does not itself test against standards. These tools have different scopes; no single automated check proves usability.
- Repair and recheck. Correct source HTML or apply suitable custom tagging, regenerate the PDF, and repeat the checks on the delivered file.
Use custom tagging where automatic mapping is insufficient
DocRaptor documents Prince’s -prince-pdf-tag-type CSS property for custom tagging, including examples involving table-of-contents tags, decorative content, and ARIA roles. Use none only for content that is genuinely decorative. Do not hide meaningful repeated content such as page numbers.

What PDF/UA-1 does—and does not—establish
PDF/UA-1 requests tagged output; it does not guarantee that the source semantics, visual presentation, reading order, interactive behavior, or final user experience are correct. DocRaptor itself cautions that additional modifications may be required. Do not treat the profile setting as proof of full WCAG conformance or compliance with a particular law. W3C’s PDF techniques are informative examples of ways to meet WCAG, not mandatory implementations; see All WCAG 2.2 Techniques.
