To stream sermon videos stored on a church NAS, use a computer on the church network to access the share, arrange the files in OBS Studio with its VLC Video source, and send OBS’s output to a stream created or scheduled in YouTube Studio. Test the complete playlist and YouTube preview before the service; YouTube Live does not turn a NAS folder into a playlist by itself.
What you need before you start
- A computer that can access the church NAS and run OBS Studio.
- VLC installed in an architecture that matches OBS—for example, 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS—so the VLC Video source is available.
- The sermon videos accessible from the streaming computer, plus any necessary permission to broadcast the recordings, music, slides, or other media they contain.
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming. YouTube says first-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available.
- A network connection with enough reliable upload capacity for the stream settings you choose.
The precise steps for mounting or mapping a NAS share depend on its vendor, firmware, and your computer’s operating system. OBS’s guidance covers media sources and playlists, not setup for each NAS. Use the NAS maker’s instructions or your church’s network administrator; do not expose the share publicly just to make it accessible.
1. Connect the streaming computer to the NAS files
Connect the computer to the church network and use the operating system’s normal method to mount or map the NAS share. Confirm you can open the sermon files from that computer, then add them to OBS from the accessible share path. Keep the share available throughout playback: if the computer loses access to a file, the playlist may not play as expected.
2. Build the sermon playlist in OBS
- Open OBS and select the scene that will carry the sermon video.
- In the Sources panel, add a VLC Video Source. OBS requires VLC to be installed for this source to appear.
- Add the sermon video files to the source’s playlist in the intended service order. Test the actual files: supported formats and playback behavior depend on the installed software and media codecs.
- Leave shuffle off if the service needs a fixed sequence. Set looping according to the service plan; turn it on only if the playlist should repeat after the final item.
- Check that the source fits the scene and that the video’s audio is audible in OBS. Play through the sequence far enough to confirm that one file advances to the next.
For a single media file, OBS’s basic Media Source may be sufficient. Use the VLC Video source when you need multiple files in a playlist, sequential playback, shuffle, or playlist looping. OBS documents both source types in its Media Sources guide.

3. Create or schedule the YouTube stream
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one for the service.
- Set the stream details and privacy appropriate for the congregation and intended audience.
- Locate the stream URL and stream key in the stream’s encoder settings. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover creating or scheduling a stream and connecting an encoder.
If live streaming has not previously been enabled for the channel, allow for YouTube’s stated activation time of up to 24 hours. A scheduled stream and an encoder feed are separate parts of the workflow: OBS sends the video feed, and you use Live Control Room to preview and start the scheduled event.
4. Connect OBS to YouTube
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream.
- Choose YouTube as the service, then enter or select the server and stream key using the details shown in YouTube Studio. If OBS presents a direct account connection option, use the workflow available in your version; otherwise copy the URL and key from Live Control Room.
- Save the settings. Treat the stream key like a password: it authorizes an encoder to send a feed to your stream. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and update OBS. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
5. Test the playlist and go live
- Start the OBS stream early enough to troubleshoot before the congregation expects the service to begin.
- In Live Control Room, wait for the encoder preview. Check that the picture and sound are present and that the correct stream is receiving the feed.
- Watch the VLC playlist advance as expected. Check the opening, transitions between files, audio levels, and the end or loop behavior you selected.
- Check YouTube’s stream health and test the network path at the intended stream settings. YouTube recommends preparing and testing the network rather than assuming a particular connection type works for every setup; wired Ethernet can be an option where it suits the church’s network and location.
- For a scheduled event, click Go live in Live Control Room when the preview is ready. When the service is over, end the event in Studio and stop the encoder according to the controls and workflow shown there.

Church NAS and YouTube streaming troubleshooting
The VLC Video source is missing
OBS does not show this source unless VLC is installed. Install VLC in the same architecture as OBS, then restart OBS and check the Sources menu again.
A video will not play or has no sound
Test that specific file on the streaming computer and check that the installed media software and codecs can play it. Confirm OBS is capturing the source’s audio and that the scene’s audio is not muted. Test every file type used in the service; successful playback of one recording does not establish that all files will work.

The playlist plays in the wrong order or repeats unexpectedly
Review the playlist order and shuffle setting in the VLC Video source. Turn shuffle off for a fixed service sequence, and change the loop setting if the playlist should stop after its last item rather than repeat.
OBS cannot find files on the NAS
Verify that the streaming computer is connected to the church network, the share is mounted or mapped, and the files open from the same account running OBS. Keep the NAS path available during the stream. NAS setup varies by vendor and operating system; avoid making the share public as a workaround.

YouTube does not show an encoder preview
Check that OBS is streaming to the correct YouTube stream and that its URL and key match the details in Live Control Room. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Studio and replace the value in OBS. Also check that the channel has live streaming enabled and that the network is carrying the feed.

The preview is unstable or YouTube reports poor stream health
Test upload capacity and reliability at the settings you intend to use, and inspect YouTube’s stream-health information. The cause can be the network path, including the computer’s connection to the router; test the actual church setup rather than assuming Wi-Fi or Ethernet is always the answer.

Rights and service planning
Technical access to a recording does not establish permission to broadcast it. Confirm that the church has the necessary rights for each sermon recording and any included music, slides, or other material. YouTube’s encoder and playlist setup instructions do not determine whether a church may rebroadcast particular files.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a continuous YouTube channel built from uploaded recordings, StreamNeo is an alternative to running OBS on a church computer: upload the video or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home or at church. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded for one flat price per slot; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it does not stream from a camera. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
