You can create a YouTube radio station by sending a continuous or scheduled audio-and-visual program to YouTube Live through an encoder. Set up live access, create a stream in YouTube Studio, connect the encoder with the stream URL and key, preview the feed, then go live. For an always-on prerecorded playlist, you also need reliable playout, rights for the music and video, and a plan for sessions longer than 12 hours.
What “YouTube radio station” means
YouTube does not turn a channel into a radio station with a single setting. The format is a livestream: an encoder sends YouTube a feed, which can combine music or other audio with a still image, visualizer, or video. You can present live programming, schedule individual broadcasts, or play prerecorded material continuously.
YouTube supports software and hardware encoders. A hardware encoder is optional, not a prerequisite. A software encoder is often the simpler starting point; hardware may suit a higher-production setup. YouTube’s official guidance describes both categories but does not establish a performance ranking among specific products.
Before you set up the stream
Confirm live-stream eligibility
As checked on 2026-10-03, YouTube’s getting-started guidance says a channel must be verified, must have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the creator must be at least 16. Requirements can change; check YouTube’s current live-stream setup guidance before planning a launch.

Choose the program and playout method
- Live-hosted show: Use a software or hardware encoder to combine your microphone, other sources, and visuals.
- Prerecorded or playlist-style output: Arrange a dependable playout process that feeds the selected recordings to the encoder. YouTube’s encoder list includes a cloud option for 24/7 prerecorded-video streams, but that listing is not a comparative evaluation.
- Visuals: A still image or looping visual can accompany a radio-style program. Use only media you have permission to broadcast and archive.
Decide how sessions and archives will work
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If keeping a replay matters, plan shorter sessions or a separate archive workflow. A local recording can provide a backup, but check that it is actually being written and is usable.
Clear rights for the actual use
Having a copy of a song or video does not, by itself, establish permission to broadcast it. YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to represent that it has the necessary rights worldwide, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses), and other royalty participants. Confirm with the relevant rights holder or licensor that permission covers your intended territory, live use, and any saved replay. A generic “royalty-free” label is not proof that every one of those uses is covered.

YouTube may terminate a stream for copyright or Community Guidelines strikes, and an archived stream may receive a Content ID claim after the live event. See YouTube’s livestream terms and its guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Create a new stream, or open Manage to schedule one. Scheduling can give viewers an upcoming watch page to share and can support reminders.
- Set the stream details. Enter the title and other metadata, choose the audience and visibility settings, and configure monetization if available to your channel. If reusing saved settings, confirm the metadata, privacy, monetization, and stream-key choices rather than assuming they are still right.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. In Live Control Room, copy the YouTube server URL and stream key into the matching fields in your encoder. The key acts like a credential: do not publish or share it, and reset it if you believe it has been exposed. YouTube documents the encoder workflow in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Build the program feed. Select the right audio and video sources in your encoder. For a radio-style show, check that the audio is present and the visual is appropriate for the entire program. Confirm the music and image or video rights cover the planned use.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Wait for the incoming feed in Live Control Room. Check picture, audio levels, sync, and the selected stream details before pressing the control to go live.
- Verify what viewers receive. Open the watch page from another browser or device, and test access on mobile. Keep an eye on the feed and have a procedure for restoring it if the encoder, computer, network, or stream connection fails.
- Check the archive and analytics. After the broadcast, confirm whether the replay is available and verify any local backup. Review live analytics and monetization settings if you are eligible.
Choose between a long stream and recurring sessions

Whichever approach you choose, test the full signal path before announcing the station: encoder output, Live Control Room preview, public watch page, audio, and recording backup. YouTube’s live-streaming tips provide additional checks, but do not promise a 24/7 uptime design.
