To create a YouTube livestream key for an automated radio station, open YouTube Studio → Create → Go live, create or select a stream, then copy its stream URL and key into the matching fields in the station’s encoder. The key authorizes the encoder to send the feed; it does not create a playlist, schedule songs, or keep the station running by itself.
Before you create a stream key
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance. If live streaming is not yet available, complete verification and enable it before planning a broadcast.
You also need an encoder: software or hardware that sends the station’s audio and any accompanying video to YouTube. Your automation system is responsible for music rotation and scheduling; the stream key is only the credential that lets the encoder connect.

Create or select the YouTube stream
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Create → Go live to open Live Control Room.
- Open the Stream tab. Create a stream if this is your first broadcast, or select an existing stream and its settings.
- If you want to prepare a watch page in advance, open Manage → Schedule stream and create an event or reuse settings. Scheduling prepares the event; the encoder must still send the feed.
- In the stream settings, locate the stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private.
You can reuse an existing key. To make a custom key, choose Select stream key → Create new stream key in the stream settings. A separate key may make it easier to manage an encoder connection, but the key itself does not automate the station.

Put the key into your station encoder
- In the encoder, choose YouTube as the destination if it is listed.
- If the encoder asks for server details manually, copy YouTube’s stream URL into the Server, Server URL, or RTMP server field, and copy the key into Stream Key. Use the corresponding fields; do not paste the key into the URL field.
- Check the encoder’s audio source, any visual output, and the station’s playlist or automation schedule. The YouTube key does not supply audio or choose what plays.
- Start the encoder output. For a scheduled event, wait for its preview to appear in Live Control Room, confirm the intended visibility, and select Go live when YouTube prompts you.
- Verify that the preview contains the expected audio and video, then monitor stream health while the station runs.
Set visibility deliberately: public streams are discoverable, unlisted streams are accessible to people with the link, and private streams are restricted. Review the visibility shown in Studio before starting the event.
Choose encoder and connection settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure form of RTMP, when the encoder supports it. Its encoder guidance also recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate need to match the actual output and the encoder’s capabilities; an audio-first radio stream does not automatically need a high-resolution video bitrate.
| Example video output | YouTube’s H.264 bitrate guidance |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended |
These are YouTube’s encoder guidance figures for the stated H.264 examples, not requirements for every radio stream. See YouTube’s encoder settings for the applicable codec and output guidance. If your station sends a static image or visualizer, choose settings for that output rather than assuming the examples are mandatory.

For the network connection, YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Measure the available upload capacity on the connection the encoder will actually use; download speed is not a substitute. If you configure a backup feed, account for its upload demand as well. Test the complete setup before relying on it for a scheduled broadcast. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Protect, reuse, or replace the key
Treat the key as a credential: do not post it, share screenshots containing it, or leave it in a public configuration file. If you think it has leaked, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the stored key in the encoder. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a key; editors and viewers do not have that permission. See Manage live stream settings.
Reusing a key can simplify repeated broadcasts from the same encoder. Create a new key when you want to separate credentials or replace one that may be exposed. YouTube’s help guidance states that a channel can have up to 10 active streams and a stream key can be used for up to 3 active streams; check the current Live Control Room behavior if your station runs several feeds.

- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Plan for long-running radio streams
YouTube’s help guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a continuous stream lasting 12 hours or more will be saved as one complete video. If a complete archive matters, plan shorter sessions and check the current archive behavior in Studio.
A key does not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation. The encoder, station automation, computer or hardware, and network all affect whether the feed continues. YouTube documents stream limits and setup guidance, but does not describe a special radio-only key or promise that a particular key will keep a station live continuously.
Before broadcasting music, make sure you have the necessary rights for the recordings and any accompanying material. YouTube may restrict or remove livestreams that violate its copyright rules; review YouTube’s copyright guidance and live-streaming requirements.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
Live streaming is unavailable in Studio
Check that the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restriction within the past 90 days. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours for enablement to take effect.
The encoder cannot connect
Confirm that the server URL and key are in their correct fields, with no accidental spaces or missing characters. Check that the encoder is using the URL shown for the selected stream and that its network can reach YouTube. If the key was reset, update the encoder with the replacement.

The stream stops or the archive is incomplete
Check whether the encoder or automation software stopped, whether the upload connection lost capacity, and whether the stream exceeded the under-12-hour automatic-archive condition. YouTube’s stated limits are not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming or a complete archive for a longer continuous broadcast.
You cannot reset a compromised key
Ask a channel owner or manager to reset it in Live Control Room; editor and viewer roles cannot perform that action. Then update the encoder before reconnecting.
