To play videos randomly on a YouTube Live stream, create a playlist in OBS Studio using its VLC Video source, then enable Shuffle Playlist and, if you want the sequence to repeat, Loop Playlist. YouTube’s own playlist Loop control is for viewers watching regular videos; it does not randomize the feed sent to a live broadcast.
Why YouTube’s playlist controls do not shuffle a live stream
YouTube Help describes its playlist Loop control as a way for a viewer to repeat ordinary video playback. A live broadcast instead receives its video and audio from an encoder. To shuffle videos in a live show, arrange and randomize the files in the encoder before sending the feed to YouTube. YouTube’s playlist loop instructions and its encoder setup guide cover these separate functions.

OBS’s Media Sources guide describes Media Source as a single-file source with a Loop option. For a multi-file playlist, use VLC Video. The guide is dated January 11, 2022; labels and control placement may differ in a later installed build, so check the source properties in your version. OBS Media Sources documentation
Set up a shuffled, looping playlist in OBS
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. VLC is required for OBS’s VLC Video source to be available. Open OBS and select or create the scene that will carry the video. In OBS, a scene is where you assemble sources for the output. OBS Sources Guide
- Add the local video files. In the scene’s Sources dock, add a VLC Video source and add the files you want to play to its playlist.
- Enable shuffle and looping. Open the VLC Video source properties. Turn on Shuffle Playlist to randomize playback order. Turn on Loop Playlist if playback should restart after the final file. OBS documents shuffle as off by default and loop as on by default, so verify both settings rather than relying on defaults. The guide does not specify the randomization algorithm or whether restarting creates a fresh shuffle.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select a stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings, then start streaming from OBS. The URL tells the encoder where to send the feed; the key authorizes YouTube to accept it. Treat the key like a password and do not share it. YouTube’s encoder setup guide and live stream settings
- Preview and monitor the broadcast. Check the preview in Live Control Room before going live. Test representative picture and audio, confirm the event is reachable, and monitor stream quality during the broadcast. YouTube live streaming tips
Use local files and check content rights
The OBS VLC Video source documentation supports playlists of media files. It does not establish that arbitrary YouTube watch-page links can be added to the playlist, or that behavior is identical across OBS, VLC, and operating-system versions. Test the files and installed versions before a scheduled stream. Make sure you have authorization to broadcast every video and audio track; the software controls do not grant rebroadcast rights.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
- VLC Video is missing: Install VLC, then reopen or refresh OBS and check the Sources menu again. OBS requires VLC for this source.
- The same file keeps playing: Confirm that multiple files were added to the VLC Video playlist and that Shuffle Playlist is enabled in that source’s properties.
- The playlist stops after the last file: Enable Loop Playlist. OBS documents this control as restarting the source when it runs out of media.
- YouTube does not receive the OBS feed: Check that OBS uses the selected stream’s URL and key, and that the event is selected in Live Control Room. Keep the key private; if it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube’s stream settings and update OBS.
- The result differs from the instructions: The OBS reference guide is dated 2022, and it does not promise identical behavior across versions. Check the controls in the installed source properties and test playback before scheduling the broadcast.
