To loop locally stored videos of different formats on YouTube Live, add them in order to an OBS Studio VLC Video source, enable Loop Playlist, then stream the OBS scene to YouTube using OBS’s streaming settings. VLC must be installed, and its architecture should match OBS. Test every clip and the playlist wrap before going live: the formats OBS can decode locally and the format YouTube receives from OBS are separate parts of the workflow.

How the playlist-to-YouTube workflow works

OBS plays and decodes the files on your computer, composes them into a scene, and encodes that scene as a live program for YouTube. YouTube receives OBS’s encoded output—not each original playlist file. That distinction matters: a file that OBS can play locally does not determine the codec or protocol used for the live stream.

For a playlist, OBS’s VLC Video source is the documented option. It uses VLC libraries for extended media support and provides playlist controls. The standard Media Source is intended for an individual local file and offers a per-file loop option instead. OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes these source types and their settings.

Set up a looping playlist in OBS

  1. Install OBS Studio and VLC. Install VLC before configuring the source. OBS states that VLC must be installed for VLC Video to appear; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
  2. Create a scene for the program. In OBS, create or select a scene, then add a VLC Video source. Add the local files in the order you want them to play.
  3. Check playlist controls. Confirm Loop Playlist is on. OBS lists it as on by default. Shuffle Playlist is off by default; leave it off if the sequence matters.
  4. Preview the full playlist and its wrap. Play every entry, then let the last clip finish and confirm playback returns to the first. Check that each file has picture and sound, that audio levels are suitable, aspect ratios look right, and the cuts between clips are acceptable. OBS documentation does not guarantee seamless transitions.
  5. Connect OBS to YouTube Live. Use OBS’s streaming settings and YouTube’s current live-stream setup instructions to connect the channel and configure the stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS for standard live ingestion; its encoder guidance is at YouTube’s live encoder settings page.
  6. Rehearse before a public broadcast. If it suits your workflow, test as an unlisted or private stream. Check YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators before scheduling or publishing the broadcast.

Mixed formats: what OBS can play and what YouTube receives

OBS’s Media Source documentation explicitly lists video formats MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. That list describes Media Source; it is not an exhaustive compatibility matrix for VLC Video. OBS describes VLC Video as using VLC libraries for extended media support but does not provide a complete list of every supported file, codec, or combination.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

Actual playback can depend on the OBS and VLC versions installed, available codecs, and the files themselves. Do not assume that every file with a familiar extension will work. Test each playlist entry in the setup you will use for the broadcast, including its audio, and rehearse the complete sequence.

When OBS streams to YouTube, its encoder settings—not the playlist’s file extensions—determine the live output. YouTube’s published guidance supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not guarantees about local file playback or performance on a particular computer. The available encoder choices depend on your OBS version and hardware.

Choose an ingestion protocol: RTMPS or HLS

Protocol When it fits Trade-off
RTMPS The usual starting point for a standard YouTube Live stream; YouTube recommends it. Use an encoder configuration supported by your system and YouTube’s current guidance.
HLS A documented alternative, particularly for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP. Higher latency because video is sent in segments, and the workflow has specific playlist and segment requirements.

YouTube’s HLS setup guidance requires TS segments and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. The YouTube HLS API guide provides encoder-level playlist and segment requirements. Unless your encoder or workflow calls for HLS, use the standard RTMPS route rather than trying to construct HLS playlists manually.

Common problems and fixes

  • VLC Video does not appear in OBS: Install VLC, then check that its architecture matches OBS. OBS specifically requires 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
  • A playlist entry is black, silent, or fails to play: Test that file by itself in the VLC Video source and confirm its video and audio. A file extension alone does not establish codec compatibility; check the installed OBS/VLC setup and rehearse all entries.
  • The playlist stops at the last clip: Open the VLC Video source settings and confirm Loop Playlist is enabled. Its documented default is on, but verify the actual setting.
  • Clips play in an unexpected order: Check the order of the playlist entries and make sure Shuffle Playlist is off if you need a fixed sequence.
  • YouTube rejects or struggles with the live output: Review the OBS encoder and protocol against YouTube’s current settings guidance. Use RTMPS for the usual workflow, check the keyframe interval and constant-bitrate configuration, and inspect YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators.
  • Playback between clips is abrupt: VLC Video playlist playback does not guarantee seamless transitions. Preview the cuts; if they are unsuitable, revise the source files or the scene and test again before the broadcast.
