A WordPress disaster recovery plan specifies what to back up, where independent copies are kept, who restores the site, and how to verify the restore. At minimum, protect both the WordPress files and the separate database, retain several recent copies in different locations, and rehearse restoring them. Choose backup frequency according to how quickly the site changes and how much recent work you can afford to lose.

What should a WordPress disaster recovery plan cover?

A full WordPress recovery normally needs two parts: the site’s files and its database. WordPress files include core software, plugins, themes, uploads, custom code, and configuration such as wp-config.php. The database is separate; it contains posts and other site data, so a copy of the WordPress directory alone usually is not a complete backup. See the WordPress Backups handbook and Backing Up Your WordPress Files.

Also decide whether your recovery checklist must include surrounding services such as DNS, hosting-account access, email, payment or commerce integrations, and other external services. WordPress’s general backup guidance does not prescribe a universal inventory for these systems; include the ones your site depends on.

How often should you back up a WordPress site?

Set the schedule by asking how much recent work you could tolerate losing. WordPress suggests weekly backups for smaller sites and daily backups for high-activity sites; these are broad suggestions, not a universal service-level rule. A site with frequent publishing or transactions may need more frequent copies than a mostly static site.

The WordPress backup guidance also recommends keeping “3–5 recent WordPress backups.” Treat that as WordPress’s stated guidance, not an audited industry standard. Keeping several restore points means a newer backup is not your only option if it is damaged or contains an unwanted change.

Create an extra backup before WordPress core, plugin, or theme updates; installing a plugin or theme; a migration; and significant content changes. WordPress’s How to backup your site lesson discusses these backup approaches and triggers.

Where should you store WordPress backups?

Keep copies in more than one location so one server, account, or failure cannot take out every recovery copy. WordPress gives examples of a copy on the host, a cloud-storage copy, and a local copy on your computer. A separate external drive can be one way to keep a local copy, but no particular vendor or device is required by the guidance.

Check whether you can reach each backup if the production host or hosting account is unavailable. Record the account owner, access method, retention period, and restore procedure for each destination. A backup location is only useful if the recovery team can access it when needed.

Which backup method should you choose?

Approach What it offers What to verify
Host-provided backups Convenient control-panel workflow; some WordPress-specific hosts may offer backups, according to WordPress.org’s hosting guidance. Does it cover files and database? Are copies retained off-host, and for how long? Can you restore without waiting for support?
Backup plugin Can automate backups; WordPress learning materials describe plugins as one option. Does it capture files and database? Where are copies stored? Can you restore if wp-admin is unavailable? Does it support clear restore instructions and testing?
Manual backup Direct control using hosting tools, a database export, and file transfer. Can you repeat the process reliably? Do the files and database come from a matching point in time? Is the transfer secure?
Cloud or local storage Adds a destination beyond the production host. Can you reach the copy if hosting is unavailable? Are access, retention, and restore steps documented?

These methods can be combined—for example, a host backup plus an independently stored copy. Capabilities differ by provider and change over time, so verify the actual coverage and restore workflow rather than assuming a named method includes everything.

How do you document a WordPress restore?

Write down where the backups are, who can access them, how to contact the host, who declares an incident, who performs the recovery, and who checks the site afterward. If downtime would materially affect readers or customers, include who communicates updates and through which channel. WordPress’s general instructions do not set universal response roles or time targets; define them for your site.

For a typical restore, WordPress guidance describes restoring the files first and then importing the database. Use files and a database from a compatible recovery point. If the database credentials have changed, make sure the values in wp-config.php match the restored database. The WordPress Backups handbook explains the backup and restore relationship.

  1. Locate a known backup set and confirm that it includes both the files and database.
  2. Restore the site files from that set.
  3. Import the matching database backup.
  4. Check the database connection settings in wp-config.php, updating them if credentials changed.
  5. Have the designated site checker verify that the site and its important functions are working.

The exact controls and commands vary by host, backup tool, and site setup; record the procedure that applies to your environment rather than relying on a generic sequence alone.

How can you tell whether a WordPress backup will work?

A completed backup job only shows that a process ran; it does not prove that the saved data is valid or restorable. WordPress’s Hardening WordPress guidance recommends regular database backups tested for validity and ease of restoration.

Where feasible, practice restoring in a safe environment rather than overwriting the live site. Record the date, which backup set you used, whether files and database were both present, what did or did not work, and how long the exercise took. The cited guidance does not prescribe a universal test interval, so choose one that fits your site’s change rate and operational needs.

How should the plan handle different incidents?

Plan for accidental deletion or corruption, a failed change, a hosting outage, and a security compromise. Backups address data recovery, but they do not prevent a compromise or guarantee that a restored site is clean. WordPress’s security handbook frames recovery planning as part of security because risk cannot be eliminated; its Security handbook was last updated July 7, 2025.

For a cloud deployment, recovery may involve multiple components rather than WordPress files alone. AWS’s Best Practices for WordPress on AWS also warns that restoring a snapshot can lose changes made since it was taken. Apply that consideration to the components and snapshot process you actually use.
