To create a WooCommerce rewards program, choose a loyalty extension, define how points are earned and redeemed, configure the rules in your store, and show customers how the program works. With WooCommerce’s Points and Rewards extension, the main setup is under WooCommerce > Points & Rewards > Settings. You also need to enable coupons for customers to redeem points.
Plan the rewards before configuring WooCommerce
Set the program’s economics and rules first. Customers need to understand what earns points, when they can use them, and how much discount their balance can provide. The Points and Rewards extension has separate controls for earning points and converting them into discounts, so one rate does not determine the other.
- Choose earning actions: Decide whether points come from purchases only or also from actions such as account signup and a first product review.
- Set point value: Choose how many points customers earn and how many points equal a unit of currency at redemption.
- Set limits and exclusions: Decide whether there is a minimum redemption threshold, a maximum discount, or products and categories that earn at different rates.
- Decide when points are usable: Make the timing clear in your storefront and terms.
Do not treat the earning rate as the whole cost of the program: the redemption conversion and any discount cap determine how much value customers can actually use.
Choose a loyalty extension
WooCommerce’s Points and Rewards is the most directly documented option for the setup described here. It supports purchase-based earning, product and category rules, redemption conversion and maximum-discount controls, signup and first-review rewards, and customer-facing point information.

Features vary by extension, so compare them against the rules your store needs rather than assuming every plugin works the same way.

Install and open the program settings
WooCommerce’s documentation describes adding its Points and Rewards extension through your WooCommerce account using the Add to store or subscriptions workflow. Once installed and activated, open WooCommerce > Points & Rewards > Settings to configure the program.
Set how customers earn points
Configure the base purchase rate
Set a global earning rate that explains how purchases translate into points. The extension also provides a rounding setting; choose how fractional points should be handled so customers receive consistent results.

Adjust rates for products or categories
Use product- or category-level rules when a single store-wide rate does not fit your margins or promotion priorities. For example, you might choose a different rate for a selected product category, but set the value only after checking the economics for those items.
Add non-purchase actions selectively
The documented extension supports points for account signup and a customer’s first product review. A separate WooCommerce Referral System can award loyalty points when integrated with Points and Rewards. Other actions depend on the third-party extension and its integration support.

Configure redemption and enable coupons
Set the point-to-currency conversion so the discount customers receive is clear and financially acceptable to your store. Configure the maximum discount if you want to limit how much of an order can be covered by redeemed points.
For the documented WooCommerce Points and Rewards extension, coupons must be enabled for points redemption to work. Explain the monetary value of points and any redemption restrictions where customers will see them; a point balance without a clear cash value is difficult to assess.

Show the program where customers need it
Use the extension’s customer-facing placements to explain earning and redemption at the moment they matter:
- Product pages: Show how many points a customer could earn from the product.
- Cart and checkout: Display a prompt to redeem an eligible balance.
- My Account: Show the customer’s point balance and history.
Test the rules before launch
Validate the program in a staging or controlled store before announcing it. Test the full customer path, not just the settings screen:
- Place a test order and check that points are awarded at the intended rate and rounding behavior.
- Check a product or category with a special rate, and an item that should not qualify.
- Try redeeming points in cart or checkout with coupons enabled; verify the conversion and maximum discount.
- Check what happens after a refund or cancellation, and confirm the customer-facing messages explain the outcome.
- Review product pages, cart, checkout, and My Account as a customer would see them.
Protect point data and plan for changes
The WooCommerce documentation warns that clearing all points or deleting plugin data cannot be undone. Before changing or removing the extension, understand what will happen to balances and records, and back up relevant data where possible. If you may migrate to another loyalty tool, check its import options and data export capabilities before committing to a program.
