A “subpage” usually means a child page in your site hierarchy. A dropdown menu can expose that relationship to visitors, but menu nesting and URL nesting are separate settings on many platforms.
What a subpage is—and what it is not
A subpage is a page arranged beneath a parent page in a website hierarchy. For example, “Board of Directors” might be a child of “About.” The hierarchy can help you organize the editor, navigation and (depending on the platform) the URL path.
A navigation dropdown is the visitor-facing way to show that relationship. A page can be a child in the page hierarchy without appearing in the main menu, and a dropdown item does not universally add the parent’s slug to the URL. Treat these as two checks: where the page sits in the structure and how visitors reach it.
Plan the page before you create it
- Parent: choose the top-level page that best describes the content.
- Menu behavior: decide whether the page belongs in the primary navigation, a dropdown, a footer menu or no menu at all.
- URL slug: use short, readable words. Check whether your platform will include the parent path.
- Access: decide whether the page is public, members-only or password-protected.
- Search visibility: set indexing intentionally; a page hidden from navigation can still be reachable by URL and may be indexed unless you change its SEO setting.
WordPress: create a child page
These steps apply to WordPress Pages, which are intended for non-chronological content.

- In the dashboard, open Pages > Add New.
- Enter the page title and add the body content, media and any blocks you need.
- In the page settings sidebar, expand Page Attributes and choose the intended Parent Page.
- If your theme uses page order for a menu, enter an order value. Otherwise, menu order is controlled separately in the navigation editor.
- Click Publish, then open the published URL in a new browser tab.
WordPress displays child pages nested under their parent in the page list. Depending on your permalink configuration, the URL can reflect the hierarchy—for example, a structure such as /about/board-of-directors/. Do not assume that assigning a parent automatically adds the page to every theme’s navigation: open the site’s navigation editor and add or nest the link if it is missing.
Wix Editor: place a page in a dropdown
Wix uses the term Subpage for placing a page beneath another item in the site menu. The exact labels can differ between Wix products, so use the current labels shown in your editor.
- Open the Wix Editor’s page-management controls.
- For the page you want to move, open More Actions and choose Subpage.
- Select the parent page. Wix presents the result as a dropdown that visitors can open from the main menu.
- Save or publish, then test the dropdown on the live site at desktop and mobile widths.
Wix also provides a site-hierarchy setting for parent-child URL paths. Configure that separately from the menu position, then verify the resulting address. If a parent is removed, Wix documents that child URLs can flatten; redirect behavior can depend on whether the site uses a custom domain. Record the old URL before changing a hierarchy.
Wix page settings to check
In the page settings, review page access, SEO basics, social-sharing details and whether search engines may index the page. You can hide a page from a menu while keeping it live. Conversely, a page can be in a menu but blocked by access settings, which creates a poor visitor experience.

If you use that layout, add a deliberate navigation link back to the homepage or another relevant page.
Wix Studio URL changes
The Studio Editor has separate controls for the URL slug, title tag, meta description and indexing. Wix says changing a slug creates a 301 redirect, subject to conflicts with manually configured redirects. These controls are Studio Editor instructions; do not apply every label to the standard Wix Editor or mobile app.

Squarespace 7.1: add a page under a dropdown
The following path is for Squarespace 7.1 on desktop. Squarespace says the process differs between versions and between desktop and the app, so use the equivalent navigation controls if your interface is different.
- Open Pages.
- To create a top-level page, click the + beside Main Navigation. To create a subpage, click + or Add page beneath the existing dropdown item.
- Choose a blank page or a page/layout type.
- Enter the page title, add your content and configure the page options.
- Save, publish, and test the dropdown and the direct URL.

Publish and verify the subpage
- Open the live URL in a private window. This catches pages that only work for an authenticated editor.
- Test the intended path. Confirm spelling, capitalization behavior and trailing-slash handling where relevant.
- Test the menu. Open the parent item, select the child, and make sure the link is not covered by another element on touch screens.
- Check the parent page. If you changed hierarchy, confirm the parent still loads and its links have not become stale.
- Check access and indexing. Confirm the page is public if it should be public, and that your no-index or password settings match the purpose.
- Check layout. Confirm the header, footer, breadcrumbs (if used), title, metadata and mobile spacing.
- Check redirects after URL changes. Visit the previous address and confirm it reaches the new page when your platform provides a redirect.
Creating a subpage does not guarantee a search-ranking improvement. The practical benefit is clearer organization and a more predictable path for visitors; indexing and ranking depend on many other factors.

Troubleshooting common subpage problems
The page is published but missing from the menu
The page hierarchy and navigation are separate. Open the navigation editor and add the page beneath the intended parent, then publish the menu changes. Also check whether the page is deliberately hidden from navigation.

The dropdown opens, but the link goes to the wrong page
Edit the menu item and inspect its destination rather than its label. Remove duplicate links, save, publish and test in a private window.
The URL does not contain the parent segment
That behavior is platform- and setting-dependent. Configure the platform’s hierarchy or slug option if you need a parent path, then test redirects. A nested menu alone is not proof of a nested URL.
The old URL returns an error after moving the page
Changing or removing a parent can change child paths. Restore the previous hierarchy temporarily or create a redirect from the old address. On Wix, redirect behavior can vary with a custom domain and with existing manual redirects.
The page is inaccessible to visitors
Review page-access, membership and password settings. Also check whether a no-header/no-footer layout removed the only navigation route back to the rest of the site.
Search engines are not showing the page
Confirm that indexing is allowed, the page is publicly accessible and the URL is not blocked by an access rule. A page hidden from the menu can still be indexed; a page marked no-index will not be eligible for normal indexing.
The editor labels do not match these steps
Check whether you are using a different product edition, editor version, device or app. Wix Studio, the standard Wix Editor and Squarespace desktop/mobile interfaces do not expose identical controls.
