To create a transparent PNG icon, remove or hide the background, make sure the editing document preserves transparent pixels, and export in PNG format. A checkerboard pattern in the editor usually indicates transparency; a white-looking canvas is not proof that the exported file has a white background.
What makes a PNG icon transparent?
PNG supports alpha transparency: pixels can be fully transparent, fully opaque, or partly transparent around antialiased edges. The file will remain transparent only if your editor keeps those alpha values and you export to PNG. Deleting a visible background is therefore only half the job; the document must also retain transparency.
Before exporting, place a temporary colored layer behind the icon or open the artwork over a contrasting page. This makes leftover white pixels, halos, and faint background shapes easier to spot than viewing the icon on a white artboard.

Create a transparent icon in Canva
Canva’s PNG maker describes a browser workflow for turning an existing image into a transparent PNG.

- Open the PNG maker and upload the image containing the icon or subject.
- Select BG Remover to remove the background. If you need to separate a subject or object first, use Magic Grab where it is available.
- Inspect the cutout at enlarged size. Refine edges if the tool removed part of the icon or left background fragments.
- Choose PNG as the download format and download the result.
- Open the downloaded file over a colored background. If a rectangle or white fringe appears, return to the design and refine the mask before downloading again.
Canva documents a separate design-download workflow in its transparent-background Help article: remove or delete background elements, choose PNG, enable Transparent background, and download. That article lists Pro, Teams, Business, Education, and Nonprofits plans for this option and says Canva Docs do not support transparent-background downloads. The maker page describes a differently worded one-free-use route, so check the workflow shown in your account and region instead of assuming every Canva download has the same access rules.
Create one manually in GIMP
GIMP 2.10’s transparency guide explains the technical requirement: the image needs an alpha channel before transparent pixels can be exported. This route is useful when automatic removal is inaccurate or when you are drawing an icon from scratch.
- Open the source image in GIMP, or create a new image for a new icon.
- In the Layers panel, select the layer that contains the background. Use the layer’s transparency controls to add an alpha channel if one is not already present.
- Select the background with the appropriate selection tool. For a solid-color background, a color-selection tool is often faster; for a complex image, outline the icon manually and refine the edge.
- Delete the selected background. The removed area should show GIMP’s mid-tone checker pattern rather than a solid white fill.
- Clean the edge at high zoom. Remove isolated background pixels and soften jagged edges without erasing thin parts of the icon.
- Hide or delete any remaining background layers. A hidden layer does not appear in the export, but deleting an accidental background layer makes the final state easier to audit.
- Choose File > Export As, give the file a
.pngextension, and export. Keep the PNG export settings that preserve transparency. - Reopen the exported file and test it over a non-white background. Do not rely only on the checkerboard shown inside the original document.
Drawing a new icon instead of removing a background
Start with an empty layer or canvas whose background is transparent, draw the icon on separate layers, and keep the area outside the artwork untouched. Do not fill the bottom layer with white merely to make the icon easier to see while working; use a temporary preview layer that you hide before export.

Export a transparent icon from Photoshop
Photoshop is another desktop option. Adobe’s export settings documentation lists PNG and describes a Transparency option when the image has no background and the output format supports it.

- Remove, hide, or mask the background so no visible background layer contributes pixels.
- Open the export command (the exact menu wording can vary by Photoshop version) and choose PNG.
- In the export settings, enable Transparency when that control is available for the document and format.
- Export, then inspect the resulting file over both a light and a dark background.
Photoshop is not required for this task; the important result is a PNG whose outside pixels are transparent, not the brand of editor used to produce it.
Check the file before you publish it
- Confirm the format: the filename should end in
.png. JPEG cannot carry the transparent pixels you need. - Look for a real cutout: place the file over a saturated color. A solid rectangle means a background was exported.
- Inspect edges: white or gray halos usually mean the original background was included in antialiased edge pixels. Refine the mask or trim the edge in the editor.
- Check small details: holes inside letters, rings, and outlined shapes must also be transparent where intended.
- Reopen the exported file: some previews display transparency as white. Use an editor or page that visibly distinguishes transparent pixels from white pixels.
- Keep an editable source: save the layered project separately from the final PNG so you can correct the mask without starting over.
Troubleshoot a PNG that looks opaque
The entire icon is on a white rectangle
The background was probably left visible, or the export used a flattened version of the document. Return to the source, hide or delete the background, and export PNG again. In Canva’s design workflow, remove background elements and enable Transparent background before downloading.

GIMP shows a checkerboard, but the exported file is white
Check the exported file rather than the source view, then verify that the layer being exported retained transparency and that you did not export a different flattened copy. GIMP’s documented alpha-channel requirement applies to the image being exported.
Only a faint outline remains around the icon
Those pixels were likely blended with the old background before removal. Zoom in, select the fringe, and refine or redraw the edge against transparency. Testing over both dark and light colors reveals which pixels need correction.

The icon has transparent outer space but opaque holes
Select and remove the interior background areas too. Rings, counters in letters, and cutout shapes are separate regions; removing only the outside rectangle does not make those interior regions transparent.
The edges look jagged after removal
Work at a higher zoom, preserve a small amount of antialiasing, and avoid repeatedly resizing a raster cutout. If the source is very small, recreate the icon at a larger working size and export the final dimensions once.
