Use a browser to render your HTML and CSS, then save a PNG with Playwright’s omitBackground: true option. Keep the parts of your page that should be transparent free of opaque CSS backgrounds: this option hides the browser’s default white background, not backgrounds painted by your own page.
Render HTML and CSS as a transparent PNG with Playwright
HTML and CSS must first be rendered in a browser; a screenshot then turns the rendered page into pixels. Playwright’s Page screenshot API supports PNG output and transparency. Its documentation says omitBackground hides the default white background and allows transparency, and that the option does not apply to JPEG. See the Playwright Page screenshot API.
Install Playwright
For a local Node.js project, install Playwright and its browser:

npx playwright install chromiumSave the following as capture.mjs. It assumes your page is available at http://localhost:3000; change that URL to the page you want to render.

}Run it with node capture.mjs. The resulting output.png is saved in the current directory. The example waits for network activity to settle before capture; that is a choice for this workflow, not a guarantee that every image, font, or other asset on every site has loaded correctly.
Keep the desired areas transparent
Do not set an opaque background on the page or the element you expect to appear transparent. For example, a rule such as body { background: white; } paints white page content; omitBackground is not a command to erase it. Remove or change that rule where alpha transparency is needed, and inspect the backgrounds of parent elements as well as the target itself. Elements that intentionally have a background will retain it.

Choose the capture area and resolution
- Viewport: omit
fullPageor set it tofalseto capture the visible viewport. - Full page: set
fullPage: trueto capture the full scrollable page. - One component: use a locator’s screenshot method to capture a particular element, such as a logo or card:

});Replace .card with a CSS selector matching the element to capture. The element and its ancestors still need suitable backgrounds for the areas you want transparent.
scale: 'css'produces one output pixel per CSS pixel for predictable CSS-sized output.scale: 'device'uses device pixels and can produce a larger raster on high-DPI displays.
Choose the scale based on the image dimensions you need; the trade-off is output size versus pixel density.

Make captures more repeatable
Dynamic content can change while a page loads or during capture. Wait for the content you need, rather than assuming navigation alone means the page is ready. For example, wait for a specific element:

Playwright’s screenshot assertion documentation describes animation handling and style injection for visual snapshots. That guidance can help with deterministic captures, but it does not promise that every page asset will load correctly.

Common problems and fixes
- The image has a white background: confirm that the capture is PNG and includes
omitBackground: true. Check whether your page or the captured element has an explicit background color; remove it if that area should be transparent. - The file has no alpha transparency: use PNG rather than JPEG. Playwright documents
omitBackgroundas inapplicable to JPEG. - The output is cropped or unexpectedly large: check whether
fullPage: trueis enabled and whether you meant to capture the viewport or a single element. Choosescale: 'css'for CSS-pixel sizing orscale: 'device'for device-pixel output. - Content is missing or still changing: wait for a relevant selector or otherwise ensure the required content is rendered before taking the screenshot. A page load condition alone may not suit every site.
- The element locator fails: verify that the selector matches an element on the rendered page, and wait for it to become visible before calling its screenshot method.

When a hosted renderer makes sense
A managed service can avoid installing and operating a browser locally, which may suit repeated or production rendering.
